I think what you're doing works well, Peri. For me, I'm more confident playing with layers' lengths when the whole outfit is tonal. Or when the whole set of under layers is one color and the shorter jacket (Looking at you, Beth Ann) is a different shade or contrasting texture -- sort of a constrained color blocking approach.

I really appreciate the lagenlook on others, but despite having a good body type for it (broad shoulders, small bust, short waist, long legs, and height), I feel dwarfed in it. And the shorter, structured jackets let me play with accessories in a way that volume + volume over slim just doesn't.

Your #4 is a really sharp example of how a scarf as a third piece can rock an asymmetric, fluid top (off to closet to go copy).

ETA re coats and toppers: Yep, that's a struggle. I have over time just moved toward having all my outerwear be parkas, carcoats, or at the knee/almost ankle. Some toppers --jean jackets, motos-- I deliberately wear short. But there's a whole middle ground I haven't figured out yet. Ideas?

I think they both look good Peri. A great question though, as I question layering lengths for myself as well

These look great to my eye. I think the key with tunic-length tops is avoiding jackets with a lot of cinching/elastic at the waist or bottom, because those can disrupt the fluidity of the top underneath.

I agree that cropped, structured jackets look the most intentional, but I also love the drapy almost lagenlook inspired shapes you achieve with the longer coats -- especially that black-on-pink contrast.

So wow, okay! Thanks everyone, and especially thanks Angie...I feel much better now! I think I will still add longer length to my new coat search, but it's good to know this is acceptable too!

I agree with Beth Ann and Suz. I think the jacket should be intentionally shorter or longer or follow the lines of the top. But it's not easy - especially with the asymmetrical hems.

Great question! I've been struggling with this as well so will be following this thread with interest. I've also wondered if there are rules or as others have said if the proportions seem right then it's good. I don't want to be out and about looking like a dork.

What Beth Ann said. I find shorter over longer works, and then longer (to cover the asymmetrical or longer bits) over longer.

But I actually don't think any of these look "bad." The trick is making it look intentional and not just sloppy.

Peri: I'm working with these proportions, too. I'm finding that my motos and denim jackets -- high hip length, and structured -- work well over my asymmetrical tunics. I also have a couple of mid-thigh coats -- a trench and a swing coat, that work.

I love your coat -- gorgeous fabric. I think it would work with silkier tunics that fall down your body as a dress.

Changing silhouettes is always a bit of a learning curve!

I struggle with this constantly.
On myself, I don't like most of the short jacket over long top looks. Some do work so I think it is very proportion-specific, or maybe just that I'm picky.
I "solved" some summer styles by getting a BR cotton cardigan that was sort of cocoon-high-low. I like how the shape followed the shape of some of my longer T's and tops.
I also have hung onto some longer boucle-type jackets, and a "walking coat", meaning sort of mid-thigh coat, and I think it influenced my purchase of the LOFT coat which is warm but not too heavy-looking.
However the coats, with one exception that is softer and not too bulky, aren't really indoor, "sitting" looks--they're good for running about town, though.
This gets back also to my keeping or curating a few ensembles or capsules with tops that look good at normal length, or tucked, to be paired with regular jackets, for times I don't want to look so trendy!

Yeah I am dealing with the same issue you are as I am wearing more tunic length tops along with asymmetrical hems. I am getting a longer coat/jacket so there's less competing. We will see. It hasn't been delivered yet but I think it will hit me mid thigh hopefully eliminating some of the disjointed look between topper and shirt underneath. Please keep me posted on what you decide or do.

I've fallen hard for the long top look...so much that I have few shorter ones left in rotation. I've especially come to love the assym hem style. But...what's the guideline for wearing these with coats? My two Fall jackets and one of my winter coats just hit at low hip length.

I'm showing two of the most extreme pairings to highlight what I mean. These are my longest sweaters I think. Others may fall just a few inches longer than the coats and be more of a uniform hem look.

Pic 1...longest point of the assym sweater is way below jacket length.
Pics 2 & 3...front hem just a bit below the jacket and probably looks okay, but the back is a lot longer.
Pic 4...just to defend the sweater cause I like it! Hanging below the coat it looks a bit like a baggy diaper! It is sort of cocoon-ish in shape and doesn't look as strange by itself. I hope!

So...okay? Okay but not great? Completely breaking all rules of good taste? What are the guidelines? I'm guessing the new coat I'm wishing for should be longer so this is less of an issue. But does it need to be as long or longer than the point of the assym sweater. Yep, I'm confused!
