Thank you Suz for the link. What an excellent resource.
I'll be measuring away tonight.
Just a few comments on your comments:
- I think we have pretty much the same body type. I'm only a wee bit more slender than you on the bottom half. So if you say something doesn't look good on you (or does) I pay attention!
- didn't you *just* wear a tunic with your new black Sloans? That looked very nice on you--and very proportional...Ok, I just checked and the grey vest looked very tunic-like, at least from the front...maybe it's that the pants are a 'slenderizing' black?
- It's interesting that a short thigh can cause boot issues! That must have been a real aha moment for you when you figure that out!
Anyway, thanks again for posting the link. Very helpful (and kinda fun to do all the measuring).

Smittie, I think one reason that tunics might work well on you is that you are quite slender with a smallish bust, right? This is a body modifier that helps. I'm not exactly hefty myself, and I also have a small bust, but I do have very muscular thighs, so anything that ends mid-thigh tends to emphasize the biggest part of me. Plus, if it's higher contrast, it cuts me in half visually. (For someone with relatively longer legs, that wouldn't be the case).

But I am super curious to see how you make them work and hope you will share your tips with me. I really, really like this look.

As for measurements, on Inside Out Style there is a whole series of body proportion posts. They're excellent guidelines.

But, briefly -- my measurement from hipbone to bottom of knee is a whole lot longer than the measurement from knee to floor. I can also tell that my calves are short because fitting tall boots is a nightmare -- it's a rare shaft that isn't too high. And the boots don't fit in width, either (unless they are stretchy). I used to think I had wide calves -- then I actually measured. 13.5 inches is not a wide calf! But the wide part of my calf is not in the place that boot manufacturers expect it to be because of my calf's relative shortness. This is where I run into trouble.

Hmmm...I have stubby legs and a very long rise, and a very short waist. (My waist is my rib cage...is that possible?)
...and tunics that end mid thigh are the best on me!

They disguise where my legs come together and my waist and hips so that you can't really tell how short my legs are.

Also, Suz, how do you measure your calves and thighs to know if they're relatively long or short?

Ms. Maven, I think I'm going to need to check those guidelines for the long waisted.

Hmmm.

Summer, Vix, and others -- we should start a support group.

I remember Anne explained the clams thing to me brilliantly one time. I had wondered on the forum why I looked okay (or at least passable) in a below the knee skirt, but shorts that length looked so "off" to my eye.

She said that it is probably because a skirt disguises the length of the rise -- where trousers actually highlight it. Maybe more so in shorter trousers, though she didn't say as much. It's just where your eye tends to go. Anyway...when I'm wearing shorts, I rarely want to wear heels because most of my shorts are for casual days. So this means flat or almost flat shoes -- and my short stubby little calves and long rise are highlights. Ugh.

As for tunics, stay tuned for further experimentation. I am so determined to switch up my usual silhouettes that I'm going to try again this season. Let's hope I've found a formula. If not, I just wasted a bit of money. Gulp.

Vix, I cannot believe from your photos that you have these figure flattery concerns -- your legs always look a thousand miles long -- but I do note that you wear a high-waisted dress (like the beautiful one in your recent wedding photos) extremely well and I take your point that it does some work in disguising.

I have similar problems. I bought some of the longer tunics this year and have to make myself wear them. Now I understand why--they do tend to cut me in half or at least hit at an unflattering spot which makes me feel sloppy.

Woven tunics with split necklines also ride up and slide back over my shoulders, but that's a different problem.

I looked over some of the guidelines for the long waisted and have problems with wearing some of those items as well.

Summer, Suz, Aquamarine -- yes, yes, and yes!

The funniest thread for me are the ones that talk about everyone's rise preferences. The idea of a 6-incher being one that's comfortable just cracks me up. [Plus, talk about looking all torso...on my body I'm not sure you'd even register the jeans!]

Bring on the long-butt denim for me, sigh.

This is me, but my legs are more average rather than short. I too have a tough time with low-rise pants. A mid-rise (around 9 inches) works best on me. It's all very tricky, getting the proportions to work. I am a big fan of low contrast outfits, or a column of color under a cardigan or jacket. It feels like settling, but it always looks best i think.

Summer, I have the same experience as you -- with similar measurements -- average legs/ torso, but my calves are short in relation to my thighs and my rise is long in relation to my waist.

Tops and jackets ending at high hip or just below it are the best proportionately on me. I can wear longer ones if I keep them toned to the bottoms in a column of colour (more or less) or if I wear a column of colour underneath the longer layer.

I really struggle with tunic length items, yet I love the idea of them and continue to TRY to make them work.

I also struggle with clams or below knee shorts. A skirt that length can work because I typically wear a little heel. The minute I go barefoot I lose that advantage. Again-- I wear the darn things because my lifestyle pretty much demands that level of casual and sometimes shorter shorts just look off on someone my age. But I shudder and hope that it is Just Flattering Enough.

Thanks for bringing this up, GF, and thank you Angie and Vix for your advice.
My body proportions are very similar to those above (although my legs are average rather than short). I find that wearing tops and tunics too long cuts me in half, visually. For me, tops ending around the hip bone seem to work, as does a streamlined column of colour on the inside plus a slightly longer open cardigan/jacket over the top.

Not Angie but a member of the Short Waist/Long Rise/Short Legs club [waves to others] and those tips have served me well over the years.

For me, empire waistlines *or* ones that others consider "raised" [they tend to be in sheath dresses, and JCrew and Boden are often complained about by non-short-waisted types] both work.

Also -- Trinny of Trinny and Susannah recommends people with long torso/short legs avoid clingier dresses/tunics that show where your (lower-slung) butt starts, but...(so to speak!).
