I wish I could only care about the front view, but I'm a major pants-wearer, and it's hard to get the back right, because for work I never wear jeans, and in regular work type pants there's a fine line between too loose and frumpy or too tight- __. Even with tailoring it's hard. I think it's harder now with the shorter and more cropped jackets. I can really like the lines in front, but then the back sort of splays out or sags or it's too crotchy, and I wonder if I'm a walking fashion disaster, or if anybody really notices or cares? So much of the time my backside is covered at work (well, of course that's covered! I mean, the back of my pants is covered) but I hate the idea that all of a sudden I'll be coat-less and I will have ignored the rear view.

My requirement for any new pants is that they have better buttage than my current basics in order to justify buying new. Also I think I need to explore some new "fits" . I had been relying on AT and EB curvy fits so as to have adequate ease there, but I think I'm just a tad less curvy than that, but nowhere near the "straight" cuts.

I'm a pear, and I'm with MNSara on this being why managing my rear view is a major priority.

But I'm also with Aida in that I must check SIDE views as well. I guess I am vain about every angle

I'm pearish, but other than making sure the back view is not horribly offensive, I don't give it a huge amount of thought. I don't have much of a booty, though, so maybe that's why.

I'm not a pear and I'm definitely on Team Riveting Rearsider, but this is because I quite like my rear and consider it one of my best assets (buh-dump!). This is why it's taken me so long to do the BF jean thing; even my other baggy pants still generally make my rear look, at the least, pretty good. Also I have a lot of rear, heh. I do check all sides though, front-side-back. Actually I'm probably most sensitive about the side view, which is my most curvy.

THIS is why I'm Team Back View!! UGGHHHH! This photo was taken 15 years ago (I just dropped both those cuties off at college this weekend). What was I thinking? Today I would not be caught dead in an outfit like that, particularly those pants! I have a tiny rear, narrow hips, very little "meat" -- all bone. Pretty much flat. BUT with those pants! LOOK! <shudder>

I guess the only positive thing one could say is that the horrible pants makes you less likely to notice the bad hair day I was having....

For tops I sacrifice the back view in order to get a good front view. There is no way around a less than optimal presentation of back fat if I have a tight enough bra band to get the girls hoisted properly.

Like Echo, I have a "problem" tummy so the side view is very important to me. But in general, I'm definitely on Team Front View. Until I started hearing others debating it, I didn't even THINK to check out how my butt looked in jeans! I think I have a well-proportioned rear (not overly prominent but also not flat, unlike my chest) and I've considered different pocket placements without really discerning what difference they make.

However, I do have to be careful about my rear view in swimsuits, because I carry weight in my thighs and the jointure between thigh and butt isn't pretty. Rectangle shape overall, though.

As long as things aren't an unmitigated disaster back there, I am mostly on team front view. My "problem area" is my tummy, so the SIDE view is actually most important to me. I can manage to look fine from the front and fine from the back, but sideways I really need to watch out for tummy domination. And baggy butt has never struck me as that bad because it is usually clear that it is a fashion statement like with BF jeans. Now, "mom jeans" with small, high-set pockets are a different story and usually are NOT intentional, so they must be avoided.

Interesting thread Una! I am a large-bottomed gal, and yet I never check my rear view except to look for for VPL, and only making sure they are not TOO visible. I guess that makes them TVPLs.

Angie, I had a funny moment when I incorrectly read your reply this way: "what is conventionally thought of ass less flattering on the behind..." I'm on board for this ass-less look you speak of!

I'm Team Front for tops. I don't care much about the back view. For bottoms and skirts I absolutely care, mostly to make sure I'm decent and because I am pretty happy with my rear and if a pair of jeans makes it look bad, I think something is wrong with that pair.

cceile, you got it...out of mind...hmm, I am a pearish bottom half so I am a bit concerned that slacks don't make my bottom bigger, show my thigh curves, or pack me in like a sausage. But once purchased I forget the rear view and focus on the front. THere have been occasions after wearing jeans or cotton slacks when I catch a glimpse in a mirror and see a seriously bagging bottom at the end of the day. Unfortunate, but probably hard to avoid.

MNsara, I think you're on to something. People with less ample assets don't have to be as concerned as to how wide, droopy, or flat the rear appears. My pants have to be 100% perfect front and back, otherwise I feel fat and frumpy.

Great question, Una. Thanks, Suz. You are spot on :)

Yes! I bat for Team Front all the way. That said you absolutely need to make sure that the back of you looks decent - underwear lines, seat fit, leg fit, pant lengths, hair, and make sure that your outfit is just how you want it. Nothing left un-tucked if it's supposed to be tucked. You are a walking work of art that needs to look right from all angles.

But I do not worry at all about the shape of jeans pockets and whether my bottom looks perky. To my eye, the effect makes little difference especially for those who keep their tops untucked. And I am a tucker! If the front passes my test (I'm pedantic about my crotch point fit), then the back will follow suit. Hello!!! I wear jodhpur jeans, harem pants and baggy BF jeans!!! Clearly I'm happy wearing what is conventionally thought of as less flattering on the behind, and that's fine with me.

I really have to get my head right when I shop for jeans with Team Back. I have to be very sensitive to their needs as we often pass on what I think are killer jeans because Team Back does not approve of the rear view. They are wearing the jeans, not me - so they have to love the jeans too.

I am off for the day! Be back later.

Not Angie, obviously, but I just KNOW that as a polished person she would not have us walk around with saggy pants or obvious bra lines.

However, I think she probably means that the front view is most important to her. The back view must be neat and tidy but doesn't have to be riveting.

I do think many of us forget our back view. I sometimes ask Maia to take pics of that view. I don't always post them, but it gives me a sense for myself of how it is looking.

Angie, you posted on a recent thread about being Team Front View. I love that, since I rarely consider the back view, but I'm wondering if there are times when that's not good. For example, bra lines, saggy pants, unflattering pockets... I know you want us to check those details on purchases, right?

Can you elaborate a bit more about what Team Front View means? Thanks as always!
