I see what you mean IK. Perhaps looser is the wrong word. I think maybe less fitted would describe it better. It also helps if you proportions are very close to those used by a designer or brand. I think many of us have favorite brands/designers because they are the ones that make clothes that fit our proportions so well.

See, I don't think of Angie as wearing loose items at all. At least one element of every one of her outfits is quite trim to the body. I wear a lot of loose items, but I do like them to have shape, too. That's why I'm so impressed that she doesn't need to tailor so much!

Thanks for posting this IK. I think the big factor here is that Angie prefers to wear her clothes a touch on the looser side and that may give a bit more flexibility. Being a height and having the leg length that most pants are made for also helps. I rarely have to have pants hemmed and that is one of the most common alterations.

I used to have more items altered when I had the seamstress extraordinaire living a few minutes from my house but like Angie, it was more common to have dresses and especially formal ones fitted. For me, it was usually having the side seams taken in a bit from under the arms to the waist. I usually try to find items that fit well without alteration though.

I've had really excellent luck with tailoring. Am surprised to hear that you don't tailor much, Angie! I typically wind up taking dresses in to be more shaped. I'm the queen of princess seaming.

I never used a tailor prior to this year, but when I lost weight I had no choice. I brought her four or five pairs of slacks/jeans to take in. For some reason, the garnets fits worse after the tailoring and ended up being given to the good will. I am afraid to try again.

Personally, i tailor almost all the bottoms and some of the tops. With pants and jeans its almost impossible to find something that fits right, I think partially because I am petite and lots of shirts are too long and loose on me

Very interesting! I also missed the first thread.

For myself, the only thing I find myself needing to alter regularly is the waistband. This is because I am heavier on the bottom - especially nowadays - and I think I may also have a fairly long rise, so when I do find a nicely fitting pair of trousers jeans or a skirt I often find they need a pinch taken our of the waist. But, not every time...the editor trousers, for instance, fit like a glove off the rack (and those were Angie's recommendation, naturally). (-:

Ah! This has come up before. Where is that thread? I think GirlX asked this question a few months ago.

Dana, in a nutshell - not that often.

- I rarely have items altered, actually.

- More often than not, my jeans gape at the back (I have a slight sway back), so I have waistbands altered when necessary.

- I never need to alter trousers and skirts. Somehow, they always seem to fit (unless the lengths are too short).

- I am regular height, and items virtually never need to be hemmed. I even found cropped pants at the perfect length in Japan.

- I am not all that bothered about extra waist definition, so when a style in supposed to fit very closely on the waist, I am happy to wear it less tight. I think that has become part of my look.

- I sometimes move buttons on coats and jackets so that the shoulders and torso are shaped to perfection.

- I have long arms, so long sleeves are often short. But when you scrunch and wear things bracelet length, it all works out :)

- Formal dresses often require an extra dart or tuck so they usually end up being altered.

It's not that everything that I try on fits perfectly all the time. Not at all. But I am extremely fussy about my clothing fits. I will not purchase items that do not fit *virtually* 100% straight off the rack. When you have a minimal and polished style - things must fit to the letter because that is what will take centre stage.

I hope that makes sense.

Angie, how often do you find yourself getting garments altered for fit? All your clothes fit so beautifully.

The more I get things altered, the happier I generally am with them, but then I am a customizer. I do it myself whenever I can - I've cut things off shoes, opened seams on jackets, etc. Having a tailor do it professionally is an extension of this, for me at least.
