Thanks, everyone. It sounds like the consensus is to invest in quality--at least making sure they are known for sun protection. I am glad for a chart. I do live in a high elevation with mostly sunny days (NM). I probably won't do prescription at this point, because I only need readers, and can survive the few minutes here and there of sunny reading.

Such a great thread! I have prescription sunnies and pay the up charges not covered by my insurance to get a really dark tint and as much UV protection as I can.

I have prescription glasses and sunglasses and they have all the coatings. You probably already know that elevation makes skin and eyes more susceptible to sun damage, due to thinner air. Get the best quality sunglasses you can. You won’t regret it in the long run.

If you wear prescription glasses at all, I'd Highly recommend rx sunnies. With my history of eye problems, I take no chances losing any more of my vision, and spare no expense. Definitely worth it cause I wear them all the time. Actually I only wear my regular glasses when I can't avoid driving at night.
My dad has progressive glasses, and he was having issues seeing in bright sunlight, where I don't- cause mine are much darker than his get.

Carol, the Australian, African, Italian, and NZ contingents on my forum are the best SUN-protection resources! So glad they chimed in :)

Personally, I need prescription sunnies - progressive lenses so that I can see properly - and get the very best there is on offer when I order them. VERY worth it.

I don't believe that they have to be expensive (as per excellent source from Bijou) but I do believe they should come from a reliable retailer, so that you know that if they state level 3 or 4 protection that it is definitely what you are getting. An example would be not to buy them from a street vendor or an unknown foreign internet site.

Yes, when it comes to sunglasses it is better to invest in excellent ones. I used to buy cheap sunglasses (because I lose them all the time) until when an optician warned me not to do so: cheap sunglasses do not protect the eyes. Now I buy "serious" sunglasses with a good level of protection.

Thanks, Bijou--that is useful information. We also have mostly sunny days here in New Mexico, so it becomes important.

This is a link to the Australian Cancer Council regarding eye protection. Alas with all the sun we get, Australia has a very high incidence of skin cancer and wearing hats and sunglasses are an essential part of summer.

Fact sheet: Eye protection | National Cancer Prevention Policy UV radiation | Cancer Council

A quote from that page:

It is important that the price of sunglasses not be used to gauge the quality of protection from UV radiation. Sunglasses providing excellent protection need not be expensive. Darker-tinted or polarised lenses may be required to reduce glare, however the darkness or colour of the lens does not indicate the level of UV protection.

Check the label to determine the level of UV protection provided. Cancer Council Australia recommends wearing close-fitting, wraparound style sunglasses that meet the Australian/New Zealand Standard for sunglasses (categories 2, 3 and 4).

Hi Angie,

I read recently that the best way to protect your eyes, and eye skin from the sun, is with UV sunglasses. Sunscreen is good, but often it's the kind that won't go around your eyes.

I have a great face sunscreen that works on that area, so I am not asking about that. I am asking about sunglasses. If you want good eye and skin protection, is a UV-preventative pair from the drugstore good enough? Or do you need to be buying a really high quality pair to get the best protection?

Thanks
