Kathy, if I understood her correctly, Glory meant that the alterations place provided what she needed to hang the dress appropriately.

When you take it to be cleaned after prom, if you tell them it is going to be stored, I think they will do a similar thing—provide the right kind of box, with dress folded in it just so.

Hope your daughter enjoys wearing the dress and has a great time!

Glory, Thanks for the info.
Since I don't have velvet or fabric hanger and garment bag yet, I'm thinking of bringing for alterations by laying dress over pants bar of hanger and long plastic bag over it. Just to get it there. Think that will work?

Not Angie but I just picked up my daughters prom dress from alterations and steaming. They gave it to me hung on a velvet hanger and a non plastic garment bag. They recommended I store it like this until prom.

I am trying to figure out how to store my daughter's prom dress until prom and then after prom. Prom is in 2 weeks and we are taking it tomorrow to be altered and steamed, so it will be there for about a week, but to take it there and then at home before prom, I am wondering how to hang it.
I have it laying between white sheets on the bedroom floor right now. It is long, very heavy and the top and sleeves are very delicate(tulle with embellishments). I was thinking of laying it over the pants bar of a strong hanger then in long plastic dress bag to bring it to get altered and then I don't know what to do with it once I get it back from being altered and steamed, and then after prom.
I'm not laying it down before prom once steamed, because I don't want to chance wrinkles. Not sure if I should keep it laying over the pants bar of a hanger or get a fabric hanger to hang it on(don't know if it would get stretched out being hung for a week before prom).
I was thinking that after prom, I could hang it on fabric hanger in breathable garment bag, but I'm afraid of it losing it's shape and stretching out or ripping. Also, being so heavy, I'm afraid if I use the hanging straps in the dress, that they could pull and rip the dress because I put the dress on a hanger using them and it seemed like the weight of the dress was really pulling on the straps. Otherwise not sure what to do with it after prom.

 What do you think?
