It sounds like you've made your decision already (yay for sticking to your guns!).

One of the ways I stick to my budget is by writing out my shopping plan for the future; for example, I'm planning on buying a denim jacket around February of next year. For some people, that's too much planning -- but for my personality, I get a little "hit" by imagining that item is already in my possession (since I know I will stick to the schedule). I don't know whether you've got the same personality as me -- but that's one way I ease the sting of passing up an item.

Completely unrelated: I tried on that particular leather jacket at NAS and passed it up. 21" is quite cropped and, while the seaming helped, it's still quite boxy; the fit was horrible enough on this IT/hourglass that I didn't bother posting pics to YLF. The leather was lightweight and buttery smooth, which unintuitively made me less inclined towards it too: I wanted something with a little more heft.

I'm glad you decided against it. At $200, you can *definitely* find a cognac jacket at Danier's that is at least of equivalent quality if not better and you'll be 100% sure it fits.

To be honest, I found the leather on this one to be not quite as good as either of my Danier jackets.

I was going to tell you to hold off on the jacket. I have seen it IRL and it is gorgeous but the sizing is wonky. It did not work on me, even on a smaller size. It was rather boxy and perhaps cut for someone with broader shoulders. I would not buy it unless I knew I could return if it did not work out. Good decision!

I really understand you, Shannon, because it is so tempting to justify spending extra money when we really like something. I do think, though, that you will be pleased with letting this one go in the long run. You have some time ahead with limited fun money, and thus you might feel better in the weeks to come with those money at your disposal for a little something new. Upgrading to a similar jacket is after all like getting a new tv or car - it becomes the same old really soon.

In light of the fact that you asked us not too long ago to support you in your shopping ban, I would say no. I am also influenced by the few hours I spent trying on multiple leather jackets many in the same size that did not fit in the same way. It is very risky to order especially when they don't have your usual size available. Add to that the fact that you will lose a fair amount of money if it does not work out. And last, you would not need to add much to the $193 to go to Danier and buy a jacket that you could try on before buying.

Just my two cents.

I think you made the right decision, Shannon. The actual cost makes the display price not that phenomenal, and you've got a great jacket (IMO). And you still have your fun money (10 pay periods would be way too long for me without a little joy, that's for sure!)

There is always going to be something I want and something that goes on sale. And Una, you know me well - I need things here and there to keep me going. The faux jacket is working well and still in beautiful shape. This would be an unnecessary purchase.

So bye bye jacket - I will put a cognac leather jacket on next fall's budget/wish list.

I think it's worth it, but only if not shopping at all for the next few months is actually feasible for you. If you know you can cold-turkey not shop without finding yourself huddled in a corner in the fetal position three weeks from now, then the jacket could be a great long term piece to add to your wardrobe. Otherwise - run fast run far!

Shannon, I wouldn't do it with the idea that you will be using up future budgeted money. My sense is that you're like me and "need" to shop now and then to relax and not feel deprived, just like some people start craving sweets the minute they go on a diet. Also, I know I'm always able to "justify" my purchases if I reach hard enough. When you started SYB you stated you didn't need anything more in your wardrobe. This is one-in, one-out, but it's still shopping.

I think a better strategy for you might be to stick to your planned budget, but also to make a specific LIMITED list of items you feel you need enough to break SYB for should they be found. And post the list here, if you really want to be accountable. Otherwise, if you browse at all, new things will find a way of charming themselves into your heart. This jacket isn't really a new thing, but it's going to deprive you of the small items you pick up along the way to keep you going, if you use up your budget for it.

Off to hide with Kim now!

Pro:
- not all jackets come in petites, so it makes sense to pounce if you love one
- you have road tested the color, so you know it works
- great price for a leather jacket
- your size may sell out if you wait to save up rather than catch up

Con:
- if it doesn't fit/flatter, you will likely be out your budget for nothing (except peace of mind) :T
- your faux leather one is still serviceable, yes? and the faux isn't uncomfortable?
- will you really be able to go 8 pay periods without so much as a thrift run for this jacket?

I would agree that you need to decide if it's worth stretching out your budget that long to catch up. I have done that and been very happy. My Frye boots were $235 last Jan. and I didn't shop again until mid April to make up for the $83/month allotment. But it was a sacrifice. Very well worth it to have a quality item I love. I liked having some 'elastic' to my budget for this very reason, but overall I tried not to get more than a month 'in the hole'. It's easier to stay accountable that way, I found.

Tough question - my take is that since you're upgrading and not buying a new addition to your closet, it's a justified purchase. It's something you've wanted to do for awhile and it will be replacing a similar item.

No need to hide out Kim - that's exactly why I'm asking the group. I had asked (actually begged) you all to keep me on the path of fiscal responsibility and I truly appreciate both you and Ceit's reply and reasoning.

If I were to go ahead I would absolutely need to do the "catch up" as Ceit called it. And yes, there is a risk involved if it were to not fit. I have learned through buying with Nordstrom that returns are not even worth it for us Canadians who order, since we not only have to pay for return shipping but do not get back our duty expenses. I have to be fairly certain it's going to work and if it doesn't, I sell it through consignment to get back some money.

I agree with Ceit. Your budget is $20.00 per pay (bi weekly?), correct? So with shipping and taxes this coat will likely be about $160.00 or so. A good deal, IF it fits (and you LOVE it.) Are you willing to risk your money to pay for return shipping if it's not fab? If it is fab is it worth 8 pays? (That's almost 4 months of shopping in my books).

I do think it's a beautiful jacket, and it's a steal at that price! Just trying to keep you on your proclaimed path...

(Off to hide out for a while now! LOL)
