That's exactly my shopping issue Chewy - I like the 1x for around the bust and some looseness in torso but the arms and lengths are huge on me. An XXL or a petite 1X fit better.
Talbots is good for a variety in sizing and Lands End goes up to an 18 in missy sizes. It still bothers me that Ann Taylor Loft/AT pulled their 16/18's out of brick and mortar stores as they used to be one of my favorites. Now I prefer GAP or Old Navy since their sizing and instocks are better anyway.
Not to be plugging my own company but at JCP we have some nice plus size lines that don't run huge - the JCP brand in particular. Some of the XXL fits well an the 1X is not oversized. And the styles are nearly identical. Very trend right modern basics.

I am right there with ya, gal, with the lovely complication that as I go down in size everything starts to be too short. Ugh.

Most of the suggestions I would have made have been mentioned. Talbots goes down to a 14w, and any brand that caters to an older demographic tends to be a bit more generous in sizes and possibly silhouette - Chico's, J. Jill, the brands that Nordstrom sells in the department that sells Eileen Fisher (also a decent bet if you want to make the investment). I agree with Nadya that some of the brands that Kohl's sells work well, and some brands I find regularly at TJ Maxx and Marshall's - Anne Klein, some Max Studio stuff, Vince Camuto. Also the plus-sized designer lines tend to run small - I got a top recently from Green Envelope via Marshall's that's a 1x which is closer to an XL except the sleeves are a bit more generous. I think the plus sections of Marshall's and Nordstrom Rack are a good place to keep an eye out for these, as well as the Nordstrom's plus department, although 14s/0x's sell seemingly instantaneously.

Have you ever tried Ulla Popken? Her size 12/14 is pretty roomy but not too too. I used to wear it when I was wearing a 16 in "straight" sizes.

I know exactly what you mean, Khris. I have clients who are your body doubles. I've also written about this inbetween size before but can't link to my post from my phone.

Nadya made great suggestions. I second Eddie Bauer, Talbots, Lands End and the Nordies brands. I'll also throw in Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Chicos, Karen Kane and Eileen Fischer. Occasionally Vince Camuto.

Hi Khris -
I'm definitely not Angie but here are a few places where misses tops sometimes work for me (I'm a definite plus on the bottom, but sometimes a misses on top)

Eddie Bauer - especially knits
Kohl's Croft and Barrow, Apt 9 and Vera Wang lines
Bobeau and Pleione, which I find at Nordstrom but I don't think they are house brands
Lands End misses run large - including their dresses

I know Thistle has good luck with Talbots, as well.

Hope this helps!

I am right in size sweet spot again- tippee top of the straight sizes/bottom of the plus sizes (14/16/18). Which means that many plus sized items are too baggy in the armholes/chest/waist, and many straight sized items are too tight at the hip/thigh. I find that at this size, Target, Old Navy, and Gap are the stores that fit me - just thought I'd ask if you know of other brands/shops which carry the XXL or smaller plus sizes?
