From pure uneducated trial and error, I have concluded that 16W is cut for a curvier, more voluptuous figure. Because I have no curves, straight size 16 fits me better. (Although sometimes size 16 is too small and size 14W is too big -- now that's annoying!)

Maya and Khris have explained it well!

I believe that the difference has to do with how the pattern is made. A size 16, is sized up from a 'straight' sized pattern, while a women's 16 (16W) is cut with different proportions- usually fuller in the bust and hips (maybe the waist as well). I guess you could say it's similar to the difference between junior sizes and misses sizes. This is the difference in cuts for women's sizes that was discussed in some threads here recently about higher end designers expanding their size ranges, if you remember those.

I'm not Angie but I think Marianna has discussed this before and says the proportions are different somehow. A 16W has a more generous bust I think. There is probably more to it than that but that's all I remember. It's like how a size 6 and 6 petite are different. It's not just the length, but the rise, sleeves, torso, bust, and shoulders are all scaled down.

What is the difference between a size 16 and a 16W, please? A few times, by accident, I've ordered a 16W online and the items never fit me, while a regular size 16 does. What is the difference in measurements between them, please, and why do both exist, please? Thanks.
