Sterling - Many thanks for the link. i have a powerpoint doc that I have been assembling similar ideas but this resource helps for even greater refinement (and fun) -- love it. Thank you. Just did the color exercise -- I had a color palette slide but again this helped with refinement.

Susie - I'm really going to have to consider the organization of my closet based on silhouettes. Mine is definitely organized by color now but you've got my wheels turning. Thanks!

Angie - Getting sorted out is fun. Thank you.

I use silhouette, in my mind at least, the way you describe. So, for fall and winter, I have 3 primary silhouettes- slouchy pants with shorter top, jeans style pants with a mid length top and slim/skinny leg pants with longer tops. I have my closet organized according to these silhouettes. I realized that the length of a top is one of the main factors in determining what type of bottom it works best with.

Hi. What I do is use pinterest and magazines to find outfits that "speak to me." Once I have an assortment to clippings, I go through them to see what stands out to me in terms of silhouette and proportion.

This seems to be easy for me because I pin the same outfit over and over and over again. Once I understand what interests me, I start developing my wardrobe around those silhouettes. For example, I love slim fitting black slacks with chunkier sweaters. I started to copy that look for winter months. I even copied the colors in a lot cases.

This system works for me because I am focusing on my most flattering looks and realizing what I like means I don't go off on tangents and bring home things that will be quickly orphaned.

There is a wonderful website: into mind.com that talks about this. I highly recommend it to you. I'll come back late with the exact link.

Joy - I actually have been looking at Angie's guidelines for body shape. And it has been a nice start. I will spend more time with these. Thank you.

rachylou - thanks for the link. I enjoyed the history and the overview. Helpful. Again, thank you.

To quote eHow: "A fashion silhouette is the shape clothing and undergarments give the body"

http://www.ehow.com/about_5052.....ettes.html

The eHow article is about major fashion silhouettes during fashion eras, of course; and we're talking on less epoch timescales... but you know what I mean...

Not Angie, but you might start by looking at Angie's guidelines for your body shape and secondary tendencies to get an idea of your best silouettes.

When people speak about silhouettes that work best for them -- is this something like: leggings, long pull-ove sweater, tall boots VS. cigarette pants, button-down, and cardigan -- a reference to overall form/porportion of an outfit? And are there a collection of silhouettes that people have used to explore and then decide which look best? I think understanding my best silhouettes would be very useful just not sure how this is done or even if I am understanding the term "silhouette" correctly. Any help on this would be very helpful. Thank you again (I'm just beginning to take a more contemplative look at my wardrobe).
