I have done tunics with them, but when I was heavier (mid 200's at 5'9). It can be a blocky look. So try a trimmer top with a boxy cropped jacket if you want some coverage. Or luxe fabric blouse with a simple cardigan (maybe a little embellished?). And these tops combos would work with tuxedo pants too I think. </p> <p> I've always had luck finding inexpensive ( i.e. cheapo) simple clutches at dept stores or Target, or those accessory shops at malls. Maybe a darker color, or metallic. Does not have to coordinate with shoes. It's prom/garduation/wedding time so you should have some choices. And if you're not a jewelry person, there's no need to get blingy. Let the top/fabrics/embellishment make the subtle statement. I thnk little CZ studs can be enough, if you like that look</p> <p>Just an example if it helps:<br /> At a recent semi-formal work event for DH, I wore a long black skirt, a dressy ivory blouse that had flowy sleeves and some subtle slight ruffly details around the collar and placket (not too much as I am not a ruffly person). and a cropped finely knit black cardigan with jet bead embellishment, sleeves pushed up to mid forearm to show off the pretty blouse sleeves. Also a long string of jet beads, an old teeny patent black clutch, and the plainest old black ankle boots from the back of the closet.
