I think you do need a shorter hem to balance out the higher neckline and overall looseness, which could be the only sticking point for age appropriateness. I am a rectangle (I think) with a small bust (that I know) -- which may be why it works so well, as April noted. I'm very drawn to shift styles in general. (I'm also 50!) The pronounced fluted sleeves on Emma's make me love it a little less -- that with the color make it a little OTT for me, feels more like something a 50+ celeb could get away with but I might feel self-conscious. However, I LOVE the one MIchelle WIlliams is wearing in the photo you posted -- she is a one of my fashion faves, and I love black and white and pattern.
