I am currently using the one in, one out rule to help eliminate things from my closet that I don't wear. It doesn't matter if they are the same category of garment or not. It's helping me purge items that I have some weird attachment to or am just ignoring.

I at first thought I would follow this to the letter, skirt for skirt, etc. Then, I started thinking more in terms of use - casual light colored bottom for running errands in the heat (could be a skirt, shorts, dress). This is also leading me to consolidate the wardobe in general, since I've historically wanted to corner the market on any one silhouette in every iteration. Now I can say, I have a khaki cargo skirt - I don't need a white denim one. They essentially serve the same purpose. Besides, I have white shorts

Not Angie, but I purge continually. Here's one way to look at it:
If I have this fab new skirt, I'm going to wear it instead of this crappy _____ that it
really shows up. [old skirt, pants, dress]

ETA: or maybe you now see that your 2d or 3d best blazer or chunky sweater
is looking really tired

I think I'm going to have to implement a similar rule myself. My closet is full. I really like 75-80% of it, and the rest is meh. My question is this: when you get a new thing, does the thing you get rid of have to be in the same category? Like, if you get a new skirt, do you get rid of an old skirt, or can you get rid of a pair of pants instead?
cheers
Elisabeth
