Thanks, Denise (and Angie, indirectly)! Excellent advice! Yes, I have a pair of gray sandals but they are only 1" heels. I knew these black ones didn't work, but they were my highest heels (around 3") and I felt like I needed some leg lengthening with these pants :).

Jonesy, I recommend a pair of grey sandals similar to the black ones you're wearing with the paisley pants. They will go with many spring colors and aren't so light or nude which you feel doesn't work on you.

Angie suggested grey footwear with colored pants way back and she is right, they work really well.

And incidentally I like the way the paisley pants work on you and don't feel the fit is off or that they are unflattering to your hips and thighs. But tapering them at the calf/ankle would have been necessary as well as lighter footwear.

Jonesy, I love the pants and I think they are very you:). But I do agree that a more tapered and slimmer fit throughout would be the most flattering. I would either have them tailored to fit or keep looking:)

I like the idea of the pants, but they seem just a tad too short unfortuantely. I think the cropped length would be okay if they were just a tad longer. I am pretty much a sucker for paisley.

I am very sorry to hear about Mr. Plant's untimely demise Long live (the new) Mr. Plant!

First, I think that top is AWESOME on you!

Second, I actually like the fit through the size if you can get it to taper lower down the leg and also take up the hem a bit. I know I'm the minority here, but just my two cents --- personally I like this looser fit in the thigh IF it is a soft fabric (you mentioned chinos, so if these are heavy or medium-weight cotton, yes, I'd agree they should have been narrower).

Taylor, I like the outfit in that link! The crops are shorter and more tapered. THAT'S the secret!! I can't scream it from the roof tops any louder than I have already been doing :)

Jonesy, I LOVE that pattern mixed outfit. One of my all time Jonesy favourites! Those cropped pattern pants are sublime.

I have some chino shorts that I wear pretty often in the summer - in black and olive. I sure hope they don't fall into the bad chinos territory, but I do wonder sometimes... especially for those of us how are flat of butt...

Jonesy, your inspiration photos are always, er, inspiring!

I think you are right. You have a great eye for when something is off, even on you, which is the hardest thing. To me, these fall in between tailored and slouchy, and that's what's making them seem off. They seem in danger of looking like something dated or frumpy, which we simply cannot have for you.

Your TMI description (from butt to thighs undifferentiated) is exactly what happens to me with slouchy pants in certain fabrics!

Thanks Angie, and everyone! I appreciate the detailed replies! I am attaching a pic of my other pair of patterned pants that are cut sort of similarly (i.e., not meant to be slouchy). They are more fitted through the thighs (still not tight like a skinny jean or anything) and I think they look better.

With these, the high waist coupled with the looseness in the thighs, the croppedness, and the 100% cotton (so I know they will bag out more) makes me think of bad chinos, if that makes sense. And, since I have no real curve to my butt, the looseness through the thighs from the side view makes me look like I just go from flat butt to stocky legs, with no differentiation :).

How's that for TMI!

Also appreciate your thoughts, Angie, about the lighter top and shoes. That adds another nail in these pants' coffin, since I don't really wear light shoes, other than my beige snakeskin ankle strap sandals (which I did try and look okay-ish, but not great).

ETA: Thanks Sarah!

Welcome to YLF, Ms. Plant!

I think you could get them tapered and they would look great. What about posting with nude/lighter shoes and pinning them a a bit down the inseam just to check? I used to taper my pants all the time back in the day (uh, that would be the 80s, of course). I, too, LOVE that purple on you. It's gorgeous.

Jonesy, I actually really like the way they fit on the thighs! I find them a little short though - the model's length on the runway seems better for the look that you are trying to achieve. OR, they need to be more tapered as you suggested.

The pattern looks a little pj like too - but I like the effect on the models so the devil is in the detail. I guess this type of white based paisley print needs a light top and footwear. That being said, on it's own that purple blouse is KILLER on you. Wow!

Aren't they supposed to be looser in the thigh area, Jonesy? I actually don't mind the extra fabric there, but I'm not an expert on this and I see the other ladies don't share my opinion.

Thanks everyone, for confirming my impression! Yes, Kellygirl, they are the dreaded cropped length, but I was thinking they might work if they were tapered and slim-fitting enough. I really like slouchy, loose-fitting pants but the fabric has to be drapey. Ones that are made out of thicker fabric, like these, need to be cut slim IMHO, or they just look like golf pants or something (no offense to golfers out there :).

I think I'd like them better if they were more tapered and fitted through the leg. They don't look nearly chic enough for you, Jonesy! I also think they are a wee bit short. I like the length of the pants in the photo you linked.

I think those are the first print pants I've seen that i am tempted to try. I really like them but see that they are a bit too big in the leg for you. They are pretty though.

Wow. They would be really cool on you, but I agree, these may not be the ones you want to keep. Can't wait to see what you find to replace them. With luck, they will be just as nifty as Mr. Plant's replacement.

Wow! I can't get past the beautiful blouse on you!!! The pants are pretty but if they are too large or can't be tailored properly then I guess returns are in order. You can totally wear that style though.. and I don't usually like patterned pants!
