This is very helpful! Thank you Chewy and Angie! So, now I'd like to know - how can you tell when ordering something online? For example, the jacket from B.R. that Neeva linked to? It is part wool and part nylon - would that be a knit?????

The difference between a knitted fabric and a woven is the way they are made- wovens are woven on looms, and knits are knitted. This results in a difference in the way the materials feel and act. Woven have very little stretch (unless there is some stretchy fiber added to it)- think of the typical fabric a man's dress shirt is made from. That is a woven fabric. Knits stretch by nature- think of T shirt material.
I hope that helps a bit.

I see that in response to Reneeb's question about the tuxedo jacket at GAP that Angie is saying "pass" if it is a knitted jersey - and recommending instead a woven. What is the difference between the two? I really don't know. Also, what kinds of clothes would be best with either fabric?
