tulle, thanks so much for your kind encouragement! Once the dress was pinned, I was completely comfortable with the neckline (though it is a departure for me), and that also raised the waist to the exact right spot. So magically the fit was then spot on. I'm sure it will need some small tweaks after the first round of alterations, but I am overall happy.
Thanks to LynD and Tanya, too! I think this has been more stressful than choosing my own wedding dress was 34 years ago. It's nice to have it done and decided.

You look absolutely gorgeous in that blue dress--and please don't let anyone mess with the neckline! Dramatic, deep, and truly stunning, especially with the interesting caped sleeves. If the shoulders and side seams need a slight adjustment, fine, but please don't feel self- conscious about your beautiful decolletage! I really like the high-necked lacy black dress, too, but the blue one has real presence--a boon for the mother of the bride.

Okay, I see. I couldn't spend that much, at least with a clear conscience. A friend told me about her sister buying a MOB dress for even more than that. She said her sister looked wonderful. The dress you've chosen will look wonderful on you after it's altered.

Ah, Angie! Thanks for the tip about the sit-down test. I haven't worn a neckline this low in ages, so it never would have crossed my mind. Will definitely check that at the fitting.
Jenni, I agree the black lace is beautiful. I wish you could try it on - it would be stunning on you! But there is a stiffness to it that I think I would regret on such a long and busy evening. Plus, I would need a wrap in September in New England. And how could I properly dance to "Shout" in such a long and full skirt?!? LOL!
Janet, the CH was heavenly but also $3500!! Though as the sweet salesperson assured me "it's free to try on!" It was fun!
Vix, sorry I missed your question earlier. The brand is Tom and Linda Platt. I'm not familiar with it, but the shop had several of their styles.
CJ, congratulations on your son's upcoming nuptials! I looked back and saw your beautiful Komarov dress! So elegant!
smittie, the lace one and the "prissy" one are pretty. The more tailored one just felt more like "me".
Thank you, Dianna, and everyone else who took time to offer comments and suggestions. It was great to get some solid feedback on such a big-deal decision!

Late to this party and you've already decided to follow through on alterations. Looking for and finding the perfect MOB or MOG dress is truly the most difficult dress I've ever shopped for. Our son gets married in 6 days. I started looking months ago for 'the dress' and did finally land on one that needed a little alteration in the back so it would lay flat. Now I'm happy with the dress. The seamstress ended up adding a new seam and the whole dress fit just lovely. I was about ready to take it back and start the process all over again.

I like the selections above, all so different. But you chose the one that will make you happy long and short term. The color is stunning on you. As MOG this time I'm toning it down a bit so the MOB can shine a bit more. She will be wearing royal blue and I will be wearing an ombre silver. But I will be wearing a gorgeous shade of blue on my toenails!

Oh yes! Looks wonderful pinned! V neck no longer too low and length even more flattering at your knees I reckon! I'm cheering. And FWIW, I think the colour much better for your daughter's wedding than black. Both the black dresses are lovely too, I actually prefer the one you've called "prissy" and I would wear that to a cocktail event very happily - although again, V neck a bit low. So exciting to be seeing your daughter married. I am waiting for my oldest to actually get engaged to her boyfriend of nearly 4 years- there are major complications of not actually living in the same country! I have to wait longer.

Thanks again to everyone for your helpful and kind comments. New pics added to the original post. I did ultimately return to the store and am pleased that the tailor felt the alterations could be accomplished. It looks kind of weird pinned at the shoulders, but you can get the gist.
Just for kicks I included photos of the black lace number I had a brief flirtation with. Very pretty, but ultimately I decided just too prissy for me. Also tried on a gorgeous Carolina Herrara (the black high-necked one) which as you might imagine was WAY outside my budget! But what fun to slip it on.

What a great idea to taper the sides -- I did that with a similarly shaped dress once and it worked out really well for me.

Also, if you don't like the length once it is pulled up a bit, another option is to see if they can let down the hem as well.

Thank you, Angie. I think I am going to brave it, with resolve to leave it behind if I'm not 100% comfortable with what I see when it is pinned. Or with the alteration person's assurance that what I envision can be done. I still worry a touch that the length will be awkward after the shoulders are taken in, since it will probably then be at, rather than below, the knee. But I guess the only way to judge is to see it pinned.
Thanks to everyone else for your well thought out comments and suggestions. Sorry commitments this a.m keep me from responding to you individually!

If you think this alteration can be done to your satisfaction, then go for it. The dress is very interesting with those sleeves. I agree that it's too low cut (for me), but the alteration would definitely fix that issue. It is a pleasure to wear nice fabric, and it's getting harder and harder to find. The color is very good on you, and it's nice to see you, finally!

Ha! Thank you, Suz! You articulated all of my concerns beautifully - when in doubt, turn to a professional writer, no?
The waist is in the wrong place, so an alteration would be required even if the neckline were fine. I had the same thought as you, that the same alteration ought to fix both problems. This is an alteration I often need to have done because of torso length. Honestly, it is why I wear so many loose fitting dresses to avoid that rather involved alteration.
Perhaps this is just too big a risk for such an important and budget-busting wardrobe item. I may have allowed myself to be swayed by the beautiful wool crepe fabric and expert tailoring. Honestly it just feels so amazing on the body. I have tried on countless traditional MOB dresses made of polyester with not-very-high-quality lace appliqued onto scratchy tulle that I just want to scream!
ETA, I am not concerned about undergarment issues. Because I had not planned to shop that day, I was wearing a racerback bra and panties that I reserve to wear with jeans since they cause VPL under most garments.

What a gorgeous dress! It's lovely on you. Simple, elegant, dignified yet alluring. I love the sleeve detail -- covered without being hot. And though I can't really make out the capey thing on my laptop, it sounds fantastic and a bit floaty.

So...do you need it taken up at the shoulder because it is too long in the torso (i.e. waist in wrong place)? I sometimes run into this. If so, and they are able to do the alteration, I think it will help with the key issues that I see (or maybe miss-see; as I said, I'm on a laptop.)

Anyway...whenever I need to do this, I find that the dress comes up *just enough* in the neckline .Here, it looks just a touch low to me, not because you don't look good in an open V but because this one is a bit off proportionately. And it also raises the length of the dress by an inch or so. I like the below knee length on you but because of the depth and width of the open neck the proportion looks a bit off to me -- heels would help for sure, balancing the bare skin bits, and of course it may not be as "off" as it appears -- it's hard to judge due to camera angle -- but I do think bringing it up would create more vertical balance on your frame and show your figure to advantage. Let us know what happens!

I love the colour, length is good. But I wonder about the bra issue, because it's low and the shoulders are bare.
