Lynette, to apply it on the top waterline it's easiest if you look down, put the pencil beneath your lashes and sort of shuffle it softly along your waterline... it'll feel like you're not really doing much, but a little is all it takes!

Lucylove, thank you for explaining that. I am realizing my daughter wears her eyeliner that way. I will give it a try. It may take some practice though. Glad to hear MAC makes a good product. I love MAC.

tightlining is what I referred to earlier-- placing eyeliner in the waterline of your eyes, either on the top, bottom, or both. And blue is great to wear, though it's not the bright blue of the eighties. More of an understated and flattering blue.

Oh my, such great suggestions and products! I can't wait to try some of them. Thank you all! Lash tinting sounds intriguing and so does blue mascara and eyeliner. Angie, I used to wear that look in the 80s when it was made popular by princess Diana! Has it come back around? Do you go without eyeshadow? Another question, what is tightlining? I have heard that term but not sure what it means.

If you chose to go with a tinted moisturizer (which is a good decision!) don't think you need to get rid of your old foundation. If you mix a bit of moisturizer into your palm with the foundation, it transforms it into a tinted moisturizer. Just a tip in case you want to give this a go but have product to use up.

Sure, Lynette. Let me preface by saying that I prefer the look of shiny and natural skin, so I do not use powder or foundation. I moisturize till the cows come home - exfoliate - and use a tinted moisturized intstead. I wear sunscreen daily no matter what.

After a slew of moisturizers and sunscreen, I apply LM's tinted moisturizer and blush. I use YSL's blue mascara and LM's tight lining blue eyeliner. Eyebrow pencil is by Anastasia Lippie is by LM too. Scent is by Kenzo Flower and Bob's your Uncle. That's it.

The lash tinting route has worked for me (since my teenage years and I'm now 56). I get my lashes tinted every 6 weeks, and save mascara for 'fancy' occaisions.

I believe Angie tints her own lashes and does mascara and 'tight lines'!

I have used an eye primer called Clean Slate by Tarte. It is the best for my eyes. My eye shadow stays put. I use MAC eye shadow. I use Lancôme Hypnose mascara and I have not had any problems with it. I don't use waterproof products. I also use Laura Mercier eye liner. This is the same as Angie uses. I wear brown. I think Angie wears blue.
I don't use any products on my face. I occasionally wear blush but I have very rosy cheeks so that is something I am careful about.
I have put some of these products in the finds.

Another alternative to mascara is to run brown or black (I prefer brown as it's a softer look) eyeliner under the lashes in the upper waterline. Many cancer patients do this when they lose lashes as it defines the eye and gives it that dark line without the use of actual mascara. MAC do one called Molasses that stays put on my eyes and doesn't transfer to my lower waterline (I hate it when liners do that!) It's a very dark brown and makes my eyes look lovely, and it negates the need for mascara x

Lynette, if you don't like wearing mascara, having your eyelashes tinted is a great substitute. Eyebrow tints are useful too, if you feel that you need a bit more eyebrow definition. I love how an eyelash tint gives the me look of mascara without the hassle of flaking or smudging.

Lucylove and Joy, thanks for the insights! At some point or another I have tried all the products, primer, cc cream, all types of foundations, powders, etc. Then I rebelled at having to use(and spend money on) so many products and reverted back to just foundation and a light dusting of powder. Lucylove I think I will try the urban decay. I like that brand. Joy, I actually happen to be wearing much less make up at the moment because my husband and I are on a sabbatical or gap year as we are calling it and are traveling for a year. We are three months into it and I have not worn mascara the whole time! Maybe I will be brave enough to give it up when we get back home.

Not Angie, but many of us have stopped using a foundation when getting older and use a tinted moisturizer with sun screen instead. I believe that Angie said that she does this too. I no longer use mascara or powder of any kind, or eye shadow as it settles in pores and wrinkles making them more noticeable. I do use an eye liner and brow pencil, and the tweezers gets lots of use plucking hairs that appear and grow quickly.

Hi Lynette,

Not Angie, but I'm a former makeup artist (and a fellow sufferer of skin that eats makeup!) and hope these tips can help. Makeup tends not to last long on skins that are oily or/and dehydrated. Do you think your skin is one of these? If you're oily, makeup will probably slide off your face, and if you have dehydrated skin, your skin will sop up any moisture from your makeup. A primer worn before your foundation should help, as it will give the product something to adhere to. It should give you a little more wear, as should lightly setting your makeup with a little setting powder.

For eyeshadow, I highly recommend Urban Decay's Primer Potion; I've used it for years, and if I forget to put it on, my eyeshadow creases within an hour. It keeps everything nicely in place, and should help with your eyeliner as well. As for mascara, some smudge on me and some don't, so hopefully you'll find one that works for you. A nice one that stays put on me is Maybelline's Lash Sensational (it makes my lashes look really long, too!) I think I usually get the waterproof version, but it isn't difficult to remove with a little coconut oil.

Hope this helps!

Hi Angie, your post a few weeks ago about skin care regime got me thinking a step further about my make up routine. Could you share yours and give me some advice about products you use, especially for the eye area? As I have gotten older my make up will not stay on my face no matter what I try. My eyeshadow creases and my mascara and eyeliner smudge underneath my eyes. I do not like water proof products because they are too hard to take off. I thought the problem was due to using sunscreen and moisturizer every day, but I have experimented with putting my make up directly on my skin and it has not helped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
