I have a dark red London Fog trench coat that my grandmother gave me that I love. The outer material is soft and drapey, but waterproof, and the removable lining is warm without being heavy or bulky. It is a size too large in reality but I wear it all the time anyway. The only weird thing about it is that it seems like the pockets are really low, so that I actually have to stretch a bit to get my keys out if I drop them in there. I don't know if that is a factor of it being too big, or perhaps the coat is really made for a taller woman with longer arms (but I'm 5' 9", so I can't image how it would be on someone a bit shorter!).

You must have measured incorrectly, Jonesy. A just over the knee coat on me measures 39 inches and I am only 5ft 6!

Check out Macys. They have lots of London Fog coats - perhaps not online though. You can also have a midi coat shortened to your preferred length.

I cannot fit on London Fog because I have a narrow torso. I just wanted to mention that the cut is very generous on top.

For a narrower cut, I prefer the trenches by Banana Republic. I find the longer lengths more flattering.

I have a black one with removable wool lining I bought more than 20 years ago and it still looks and wears great! It doesn't get much use (living in the south) but I'm so glad I made the purchase. And glad back then it was "in" to buy things on the large side. lol

Jonesy, I had sleeves let out - it is easy to do yourself. That extra inch made all the difference.
It is possible than your torso is shorter than mine - we all built differently - but it comes above my knee. However it also may be a fact that we are not flat: when a trench is on it becomes shorter as it goes over your 3 dimensional body. I am not sure if I explain it right...
I hope it works for you though as I really love my LF trench!

Thanks Angie and everyone who commented! Somehow the longer one looks *really* long to me (I feel like it might look good with dressier outfits, but perhaps not with a pair of jeans and flats, though I'm sure you are rocking yours, Sammi!), and I'm not digging the hood so much, or the single-breastedness...So I think I'm going to go with the shorter one, and perhaps order two different sizes to compare.

It's weird to me because the shorter one says it's 39" from the shoulder--when I measure from my own shoulder, 39" is below my knee...maybe the measurements are wrong, or I am just weirdly short from shoulder to knee? I am concerned about the sleeve length being too short, but Sveta, your testimony gives me hope :), and with free shipping why not give it a go? I will post pics, of course!

Thanks again!

I love the idea of the style of the first one on you, but on the other hand it would be a heck of a lot of black. This gives me pause, but I trust your judgement on this, so I am curious to see how it works. In conclusion, please post pics

I think trenches are extremely practical and versatile (I have two), so a big thumbs up from me. These coats are exactly like the ones my mother has worn since I was a child, and I have yet to see them as looking dated. I think you could pull of either length.

Hi Jonesy! With all of your great boot looks, I bet you could rock the longer one. If hemlines are headed in that direction, it won't date as quickly as the short one. I've always loved the duster/boot look, and I think you're tall so it would be easy for you to pull off.

I have one that looks just like the picture in #1, so I'm glad to hear Angie approves!

I'm fairly short, so I do have to wear mine with heels, or it looks off. I also had to have it tailored since the smallest size was still a bit large. However, I've had it for about 4 years and it still looks just as good as new! The lining makes it super warm in the winter.

Not Angie (duh), but I really like the shorter LF coat. At almost 5'5", that length has been very good for me . . .

I think LF is good quality (Although I did have one problem on the LF I bought for my daughter and some seams fell apart within a few weeks but she was in Europe for the semester and I couldn't get it back to Macy's to be repaired.)

Why of course I have seen them, Jonesy :). And the midi is long!

Well made and classic, but can absolutely be edged up. Kate Moss has one - enough said. I'm a fan of this look. Thumbs up from me!

They run a little large so you might need to size down.

Jonesy, years ago I had a London Fog coat with a liner. Not a trench, but another classic style, sort of like a duster. It was a fantastic coat. I could wear either piece alone or both together for more warmth. Really useful. I wore it to the ground, had it for about 7 years. I don't know if the quality is always that good, but that was true of one coat, anyway.

Jonesy, I have London Fog trench from last year NAS - with detachable lining. It looks pretty similar to this one in style:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/lo.....ltback=177
I love it and it is very practical. I wish it was a bit longer on me as it falls a couple of inches above my knee but otherwise I love it.

I am realizing that I need a somewhat basic fall/spring coat for work. I am eyeing a few trench coats from Nordstrom, made by London Fog. They are both reasonably priced, and have removable liners. I would purchase it in black (both come in black and trench coat beige). One is longer than the other (midi length) with a detachable hood, and is single-breasted; the other seems to be a more classic trench silhouette.

I was wondering if you had seen these in person, and/or if you had any feelings about one vs. the other? Any thoughts would be appreciated, as always :). I realize these might be a bit more classic than I usually go for, but I like the idea of getting a basic coat that won't date too quickly for work, and I like that they have liners so they offer some warmth, vs. a thin nylon trench.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts too, of course!!
