Hi Wendi, when I found YLF two summers ago I was wearing a lot of T-shirts too. I would jazz them up with a summer scarf but you're right, sometimes it's just too hot for that. Jewelry can be hot and irritating too (and a heat conductor!) so I'm wearing less of that these days. Denim and other unlined cotton/rayon skirts are a mainstay for me because they seem cooler than any kind of shorts or clams.

I've gone from T-shirts to sleeveless sweaters and woven silk blouses. Lately I've given in to my addiction to prints. If I have a print on my top half, I'm happy with that, and I don't feel the need to accessorize so much. It took me a long time to figure out what would make me happy.

Suz - that's reassuring, I actually thought I had spelled it correctly, so this proves I'm not going mad just yet;-)

My pleasure, Adelfa - you always look absolutely amazing, and let me assure you, I'd be struggling to look somewhat stylish every day in that kind of heat, yet you make it look so easy.

Inge, thank you! I don't really "get" tops and tend to over-rely on tees, though in the last year I've discovered button-ups. What a useful exercise in top-for-hot-weather coceptualization! The caption + pic brings it home.

I live where it gets to over 110 (43C) and my strategies are similar: sleeveless fit-and-flare dresses, amazing sandals (flat or heeled but always comfy and non chafing), cute belts when I do wear separates.

Holy moley, Inge did one of her fabulous lists! I'm glad I have a nice cup of tea in my hand because I am going to curl up and DEVOUR this one. Inge, you are brilliant, and so generous.

Wendi, I live in a very hot-summer climate in the Southern California desert, so this post is right up my alley. We have already had several days of 100+ temps recently, and looking good, or let's say decent, in the heat is something I struggle with every year.

Besides the great ideas already mentioned, I recommend you look at ClearlyClaire's outfits on this forum for inspiration, she's a whiz at looking cool and classy under an unforgiving Arizona sun.
Fab suggestions from the other ladies. And I love the idea of a lace or eyelet print top to add textural interest to your outfits Wendi.

I find that the easiest way to feel polished and put together in very hot weather is by wearing a (sleeveless) dress - fit and flare is always breezy. You can add a cardi, jacket, blazer, denim jacket, bomber jacket in AC or when it starts to cool off. Add a fab pair of shoes and a bag and you are good to go. Angie has been doing great roundups that include dresses on the blog.

The second thing that can quickly change the feel of an outfit is what Louise and others also talked about: changing out the classic plain tee for a different kind of top. That way you can mix things up and create looks that feel a little "different" while still using only one layer. I'm thinking of cotton, linen, silk etc. tops, blouses and/or very lightweight sweaters with interesting detailing: zipper, asymmetrical detail, cold shoulder, high-low hemline, a print, sequins, neckline, interesting drape, mixed media materials, ruching, peplum style, plissé, open back…

Some examples:
- cowl neck
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/cl.....y-personal
- lightweight sweater with a tonal stripe

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=411311042

Update: I found a French terry navy/white striped blazer at Old Navy for $8.99. Looks great with jeans or chinos and a coral or turquoise tee; I'm sure it will work with other colors, too.
I also got a turquoise bubble necklace, and this one in white:
https://www.kohls.com/product/.....cklace.jsp
They really help me make my solid scoop neck or vee neck tees look great!

I also found a great black and white striped cardigan at Nordstrom Rack. It's by Bobeau. It's a very sheer and lightweight rayon jersey. Light to wear, and easy to put in my purse if I get too hot, or to carry in case I need it in the a/c.

I've been able to wear my denim jacket some, but once we really get into summer, it will be too warm even in the evening for it.

But I'm glad I've found a few options; thanks for the tips.

I just dropped by Macy's today, to see if there was anything I wanted to use the 25% off coupon on (last day), and I found these cute floral skinny jeans on clearance. Total with tax was twenty bucks. I thought they'd be more fun to wear with solid tops than solid jeans, and make a plain tee more of an outfit. We'll see.
I have been looking for a couple loose woven tops in my budget. I do have some nice-fitting tees now. Believe it or not, I got some really nice v-necks from Costco recently. I have also been stocking up on Gap tees when they're on sale and I have a coupon code. They fit me well.

I actually bought a couple of lace top over camisole items recently, but I haven't worn them yet. I thought the lace tops would go over a variety of camis or tanks, and possibly even tees. Here's one of them: http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....sn_results, only I got it in black. The other is white, and buttons all the way up the front, so I could wear it open as well. I'm hoping these will help me layer without weight. However, they seem like they might snag, so I'm not sure how long they'll last. They were on clearance PLUS I had a coupon for 25% off, so I ended up paying about $24 for both of them altogether. So I figured even if they only last through this summer, I won't be too sad.
You might need to think about a different type of top -- wovens can be cooler as well as stylish. But the trouble there is finding great looking, inexpensive woven tops. This can be a challenge.

Another consideration is the cut of the tees, if you are wearing tees. You can look for those that drape nicely or have a high-low hemline.

Good ideas! I will focus on footwear more, look for some fun jewelry, and remember that fit and quality can make a basic less boring.

I spend a lot of time in A/C, of course, but even walking across a parking lot is like walking on the surface of the sun in the summer. (I live in the desert.) so unless I'm going somewhere where the A/C might be really low (movie, restaurant), any layer is out. I have been wearing cropped jeans and khakis, and I also just ordered a jersey skirt from the Gap, plus I've got a maxi skirt and a sleeveless maxi dress. I just don't want my plain tees to look boring without a scarf or cardigan.

I resort to gauzy shirts with the sleeves rolled up, shorts, and maybe a fun bangle or big watch. I bought one with a white rubber strap and that's been a nice accent piece. Otherwise I second Suz re: footwear and handbags.

Well, you've hit the jackpot with this question. It is a perennial discussion here on the forum, and Angie has addressed it many times both here and on her blog. It seems that no matter how hard we try, most of us struggle to feel fashionable in the really hot months.

I am still very much working on this one myself. Since I work at home, most of my wardrobe is casual and functional, but at the same time I would dearly love to make it more stylish!

I find any kind of accessories beyond simple earrings and (perhaps) a cuff to be unbearable in our heat and humidity. So, realistically, we are talking about a top and bottom or a dress with sandals and perhaps a bag when I go out. How to make this exciting?

I'm aiming for really high quality and contemporary looking shoes, bags, cuffs, and cuts in my clothing, as well as current and fun colour combinations. I will try some of the walking shorts Angie blogged about today. I have some midi-length tube skirts (not for the hottest days, probably). I would like to get a full skirt as well. I am aiming for 'unstructured structure" in my silhouettes.

Not Angie, but I'm glad you asked this...I'll be watching the answers.

I've said before, for me summer becomes about survival. I don't think I look as put together as I try to be in the cool months. I can't even do jeans...linen or cotton pants, some sort of variation on a T shirt, and earrings are about all I can manage. Not many outfit details.

I guess that would be one thing...you could go for statement earrings instead of a statement necklace.

What are some good ways to add interest to a basic wardrobe when the weather is very hot?

When the weather is mild, I like to dress up my basic tees and jeans with short sleeve or 3/4-sleeve cardigans, denim jacket, scarves, etc. However, in the summer, it will be so hot on some days that even a scarf will be too uncomfortable.

I have been interested in statement necklaces, too, but I'm unsure what to look for. I mostly wear scoop neck or v-neck, as I'm a little busty.

I wear a lot of basic tees with jeans (boot cut, skinny, boyfriend, colored, etc.). I've also recently bought a cute black and white maxi skirt and a black knit a-line skirt (above the knee). I'd like to look fashionable while also staying comfortable. As most of my tees are solid colors, what should i do?
