I was just thinking about this but also don't know how to go about it. Maybe one day I'll take a trip to Seattle.

Thanks, Ele. That's such wise advice and I echo it wholeheartedly.

Mac, 95% of my business is word of mouth. You won’t find any info about my style services on YLF and it’s totally deliberate. My business delves into highly emotional terrain and I like to keep it private and classy. So, that being said, you need a referral.

Mac, I wish I could help. I'm racking my brains but don't think I knew anyone who did this when I lived in TO. I think it's safe to say that anyone who has good testimonials and seems to actually do styling for a living will know what's in stores, and as for listening to you, could you request a mini-consultation prior to booking? I bet some stylists might offer this service anyway, by phone or email. If there's someone you're interested in you can always ask them questions- I doubt many would deny you, or the chance to gain a client!

This might seem a bit weird or narrow-minded of me, but I always pay very close attention to people's websites when I'm looking for something like this. These days the most modern, up-to-date and informed people are online, often in a big way. Look for stylists who blog, tweet, or write for online style sites. For me, an outdated website would be a flashing red sign to stay away- I would assume the person's style and methods were outdated, too.

Did you come across any particular stylists whose sites you liked? Maybe post them here so we can have a look- someone might have experience with one of them.

One day, I'd love to spend a day shopping with a stylist. Alas, I probably won't be in Seattle any time soon and so probably will never have the chance to work with Angie.

Angie: how should a "regular person" go about finding a good fashion stylist, please? I looked online and there are plenty listed in Toronto (where I live) and New York (where I travel quite frequently) but how to know who is talented, will listen to what I want, who really knows what's in the stores...?

I'm not going to do this very soon, but I'd like to start thinking of it as an option for the future but i wouldn't know where to start.
