Thank you Kari. A lot of inspiration in academichic indeed.
I've always secretly wanted to wear sashes

Cora, my belly area looks a lot like yours from the side. My body type is primarily an hourglass but I still find many of the "apple" strategies helpful when I am feeling self-conscious about my midsection and want to minimize it.

As far as wearing belts, it was a bit of a struggle at first, but Angie's tips were helpful - and the examples of the Academichic bloggers wearing belts in a wide variety of styles really helped me understand that even if one way of wearing a belt was not the most flattering look on my body, there were other looks available that I could try out:
http://www.academichic.com/tag/belted/
Currently I'm loving wearing a dress with a long sash with a cardigan on top, and using the sash as a belt around the cardi.

thunalata: great advice, thank you. I'll look for that elastic belt :)
Steph: Challenge is very welcome if it's creative, playing with shapes and colors. Trying to conceal my body, as I have been doing all this time, is challenging but in a bad way I'm glad I'm shifting directions.
Jjsolane: thank you very much. I'm a bit insecure and I see hugeness where there is none. That's why I ask. I'll follow your belting tip

I do not see a belly issue or cankles in those silhouettes. You look like a woman. There is a natural narrow spot around where your elbows are in the shots so try the belts there first.

Hi CaraNyn! that makes sense, short vs. long waist would make a difference for sure! oh, that would be a change if these types of style questions could be sorted so quickly - but then, what would be the challenge, eh? ;)

let us know how the 'belting' goes! steph

I'm a short-waisted pear who had belt-phobia until not so long ago...

I thrifted a few belts while I tried things out.

What got me going properly was an elasticated belt 1.5 inches wide approx. I bought 2 cheaply on ebay. Somehow after making things work with that, other belts became easier too.

Have fun!

Thanks, Angie: I have just read and bookmarked it. My first step will be to buy a belt, as I actually own none

Thanks yellowgirl and mrseccentric!
I think the difference is that the bell is a short-waisted pear?
Any body shape can be thought of as a problem. I'm amazed I could have spent half my life loathing my hips in addition to my tummy and I haven't! Well, now is too late The body type archives look very complete, I'd have liked to have this sorted out in an afternoon but I'm going to exercise my patience and enjoy the process :)

My main problem/doubt now is how to emphasize the waist without emphasizing the tummy. Must be doable...

you look like a pear to me, too - the widest part of your body is the low part of the hip/top of thighs. the 'pear' suggestions in the bodyshapestyle link look like decent ones to start experimenting with. i read that link but don't really 'get' the practical differences between pear and bell. but i think the main thing is for you to get some ideas and try them to see which you like and you're on that road now!!

a little OT, but i don't know why the pear shape is always looked at as 'a problem'. to me it's the most feminine of all body types and is just a beautiful shape. it really highlights all that is unique about the female form....

here's a link to Angie's body type archives - there's a lot there! but the titles are very self explanatory. have fun! steph

I agree that your primary shape is a pear, though it is possible to have tendencies from another body type. You may have some apple tendencies, which could be what is making you self-conscious of your belly area.

Hi!
I've always been really self-conscious of my belly so I dressed as an apple shape, but after seeing some unflattering photos of myself recently I thought I should take a honest look at my body shape. I took some pictures and silhouetted them. Looks like a pear shape but I don't know what to do of my belly. Where to belt?
I'd really need some tips to de-frump myself. I can't wear heels, though, because my arched back hurts too much.
Also: do I have this dreaded condition known as cankles? (I find it very difficult to be objective with my body)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/coranyn/

Thank you very much!
