Thanks, ladies - for stepping in. You're all dead right.

Molly Mac, the term "waist" in fashion is confusing! I hear you.

waistline = The narrowest WIDTH of the torso. Sometimes referred to as a waist. It's a horizontal dimension.

But the LENGTH of your waist is a VERTICAL dimension. It's the measurement from shoulder neck point to your waistline.

rise = measurement from waistline to crotch point, both at the front and back. People refer to a FRONT rise measurement most of the time. The back rise measurement is always longer than the front to accommodate the volume of the bottom.

If you are short in the waist AND rise, you have a very short torso.

I'm regular length in the waist, but short in the rise. A 10 inch front rise is high rise on me. Reaches my belly button. On others, a 10 inch rise is mid rise, and a 14 inch rise is high rise on them.

Hope that makes sense.

This post (and others on the site) might also help. https://insideoutstyleblog.com.....ained.html

I'm slightly but not extremely short-waisted. Meaning the distance between my shoulders and waist is on the short side -- even for someone of my height, which is 5'4". My smaller bust helps to disguise the fact; if I had a larger bust it would become more noticeable.

But until I measured, I never actually realized this, because I have a proportionately long rise...which means that overall, my torso is slightly longer than my legs.

For comparison, at the same height as you, a 9 inch rise comes about an inch below my navel.

SarahD8 and Karl's, both these previous blogs were helpful. I learned that I am short waisted and short rised (if that is a term). I guess I just have a short torso for my height :). Thanks for channeling Angie.

Not sure if this is the same post that SarahD8 just linked to.

Not Angie, but here's a previous post about long waisted vs. short waisted:

https://youlookfab.com/2009/06.....g-waisted/

The short answer is that "short-waisted" refers to the distance between the shoulders and waist.

It sounds like you have a short rise (distance between crotch {sorry} and waist).

It's a little counterintuitive but as I understand waist length is about the upper torso and rise length is about the lower torso.

ETA: corrected the definition and then re-corrected it! Haha I'm trying to help out but obviously still confused.

There have been several post recently discussing rises on jeans. This has me thinking about what is a low/mid/high rise and how that is influenced by body type. I consider myself to be "short waisted". From crotch (Sorry, I hate that word but can't think of another one) is barely 7 inches. A 7" rise on jeans hits at my belly button. 9 inch rises are as high as I can go or the waistband and my bra band are touching. I am 5'4" so a pretty average height. You mentioned being short waisted and that a 10" rise hits your belly button. Another forum member referred to herself as short waisted and this meant high rise looked mid rise on her and mid rise looked low rise. I am starting to think I don't really understand rises ar all.
