Cindy, I agree with the others on work boots with shorts. It is a look!
I have been wearing Vionic sneakers and really find them comfortable. Hokas get my vote too. Would not suggest Danskos-the sole is rigid and the platform can be treacherous with sweaty feet. But they work for some folks. Good luck on your search!

I like socks for sure. Don’t like anything to be slipping down in the heel. In addition, I need some protection, + bug repellent, from biting bugs- skeeters and chiggers when gardening or hiking. I wear Icebreaker socks with boots even in very hot humid weather, or wear the mini’s with low shoes in some cases v

I recommend Sanita or Dansko clogs. I find Sanita works better for a higher instep.I get stains on them and just wipe them off. If I use an anti-friction stick I don't even need to wear socks.

Yes, Cindy! You can absolutely wear shorts with boots :)

Use BODYGLIDE to prevent rubbing in heat and humidity.

Rockport Cobb Hills are usually very comfy provided you can get the wide size.

Another tip. Size up and insert Super Feet. Sometimes the footbeds come out to accommodate orthotics - like in Eccos.

A lot of the shoes that nurses wear have platform soles, which can be challenging on rough ground which is frequently at work. That's the main reason I haven't investigated Dansko.

Since most of you think I can get away with boots and shorts, I'm actually considering pulling the trigger on a pair of men's Danner boots (pic 1). If I wind up not liking the look, I can always do it with cotton/rayon/bamboo leggings and a long top/tunic. It will also carry me thru winter. What say you all?

Other shoes under consideration:
* 2&3. Propet walking shoes. Anybody have experience with Propet? Are they durable?
*Birkenstock hi-tops
* Wolverine boot.
* 6-9 Rockport is having a killer sale. Anybody have experience with any of the Rockport brands (Rockport, Cobb Hill, Aravon, etc)?

Cindy, you have lots of options, and I echo many of the thoughts here too:

My suggestions:

Trail Shoes (Salomon)

Danskos

Vionics (lots of wide sizes)

Brooks Sneakers and Running Shoes (go to an athletic footwear store or running store and be correctly fitted!)

Timberland and Bloodstone, but only if you can get wide sizes

Birkenstocks (look at the closed shoe options on the site)

Keens

Crew shoes

Oh, the great struggle of supportive work shoes during the hot weather! Sketchers's Work line used to be my go-to, because they had some that were slip-proof and had an upper that wasn't mesh, so it wouldn't grab onto any dirt. Unfortunately, the last time I looked for a new pair online their Work line had gone very focused onto composite and steel-toes, which is fine but not what I needed or what you need, sounds like.

When I worked at the apple orchard/farm store, I did wear Keen sandals (ala https://www.keenfootwear.com/p.....medium=pla) some of the time - they've got toe coverage and are supportive but still give you some air around your feet. Might be worth trying for the really hot days.

I still haven't tried Shoes for Crews but they've got a wide variety on their website and they aren't super-pricey, so they might be worth a try. I agree that water-resistant trail runners could be a really good option.

Another angle would be to look at the shoes that nurses and healthcare workers buy. I'm still investigating this approach myself, so if I find anything amazing I'll let you know.

My brother, who works in construction, spends $$ on Red Wing boots every year or so and wears them to death. But he also wears long pants all summer. I agree with you that boots and shorts can be a challenging vibe to style (plus then you can't wear compression socks, which I find are a godsend).

I cannot even begin to appreciate Texas heat (and don't want to ) , but I'm sort of surprised you don't wear a work boot , even in the summer. Are Red Wings, or Timberlands, or even Blundstones not perfect for outdoor, rugged work?

Another vote for trail shoes aka trail runners. I just bought these waterproof (gore-tex) ones in the brand slim cat mentioned, HOKA ONE ONE. I wear this brand for running shoes although I only walk, I don't run. I wanted something waterproof because the first part of my morning walk goes through a grassy area (no option to go around it), and for most of the spring and fall the grass is quite wet in the early morning. I hate having my feet wet for the remaining 45 minutes of the walk. They are SUPER comfortable, more stable than regular running shoes, and have grippy soles. They are NOT heavy because there is a lot of fabric mixed with the leather, and they are breathable because of the gore-tex. I sized up 1/2 size and add superfeet insoles and my feet are extremely happy. I wore them last week for a 2-hour hike through woods and hills, and they were just perfect. I have not tried to hose them off but it looks like it would work.

The shoes and the superfeet inserts add up to about $200 US total but for me it's some of the best money spent ever.

If you can find something like this in a brand that works for you it might be just the thing.

I have nowhere near the conditions to deal with that you have, but the one time I got fashion sneaks, I wound up hating them. They felt fine in the Sperry shop, but within a couple weeks my back ached so much I didn’t even connect it to my feet at first. My current tennies are actual tennis shoes, made by K-Swiss (not Treetorn, which i had in my head for a while somehow). That’s my advice—good, seriously supportive athletic shoes made to be able to take impact.

No boots+shorts? That’s a thing in Texas, you know. Remember it from when I lived there, & I’m pretty sure Texas gal has mentioned it here. Cowgirl up!

I kind of like the look of a tan leather work boot with shorts.

Some trail shoes are waterproofed leather- but sounds like ones that are part fabric might get too icky? I have Columbia boots and shoes in combination fabric & leather for gardening, and a Magellan leather boot also, on sale in $40-50 range.
At Academy Sports there were a group of women’s “ work shoes” for tough work, somev with steel toe & some not— but all in black.

When I read about the rough conditions at your work site, I wonder that wearing a safety toe boot isn’t a requirement! With the garment destructing nature of your work, what about a pair of real work-boots? These are from a Canadian site (Marks Work Wear House), but I would think that there would be similar shops where you live that specialize in work wear.

https://www.marks.com/en/keen-.....erproof-wo

Also, ‘Kelly’s Mink Oil’ (a paste in an old style shoe polish tin) works wonders on reconditioning leather. I discovered it whilst reconditioning DS#2’s grotty old work boots, and now use it on all my leather shoes.

PS: boots and shorts can be a ‘look’. My plumber looks super cute in her cargo shorts and work boots!

I think that leaves trail or running shoes. That’s what I wear at the bakery in summer.

No suggestions, but your priorities make sense and good foot support supports your entire skeleton. I am sure more useful comments will follow!

OK, let me start by saying I'm glad y'all got me off the fence about my boots. With that all sorted, I can now ask for recommendations for work shoes.

I work outdoors (more or less), and I mostly have winter covered. So many options for winter, lots of boots. My Chippewa boots are supportive and comfortable, and they're made to take abuse. I'll probably replace my Bates tactical boots with a wide width pair this winter. I will probably be dropping a couple hundred bucks on them, which hurts but I loved the last ones to death so I'm cool with it. They're made well enough to withstand 3+years of my serious abuse and they're comfortable, so they're worth the price.

That's not real helpful when it's September 15th and we're still seeing temps around 90F. I've managed to get through summer with my Twisted X canvas loafers (they're not real supportive for my arches, but there's room for an insert if they start bothering me too much). See pic 1. While they're not wide width, they're wide enough. No pinched toes, blistered balls of feet, abraded ankles, blistered heels. However, I can't wear the same pair of shoes every day, hence the need for recommendations. My wide width Naturalizer sneakers are comfortable as in no pinching or rubbing or smoothing, but they're not real supportive and there's no cushioning. They'll do for now, but they already look like death because they got wet and wrinkly after 2 wears.

Must have:
* width. Generally, I need a wide width. Some medium width shoes run wide and that's fine.
* leather or easily washed fabric. By wash, I don't necessarily mean washing machine. A good squirt with a water hose or shower wand will usually suffice to get the fruit stickies out. Absolutely no synthetic leather, it's too unforgiving with the comfort and the smells.
* arch support or room for an insert. High arches, and a super picky right foot (old injury).

No high heels, no platforms. The ground where the pumpkins and firewood and watermelons happen is gravel and has lots of wood chips and giant chunks of bark and other hazards for platforms and heels. Lug soles are cool but not a must-have as long as it isn't slippery because the walk-in cooler is often treacherous.
No boots. I wear shorts, and this is Texas where it's freaking hot, so it has to be summer appropriate. No sandals, because that's just asking for miserably sticky feet.

So, any recommendations are very welcome. I have GOT to keep my feet happy, because the last weekend at work was just gross. My right foot, the picky one, hurt all weekend. Today was better with the Skechers, but still not where I know it could be. I'm not averse to spending money on work shoes if they're super comfortable and supportive. It just chapped my hide to have to drop almost eighty bucks on Skechers because I couldn't stand the foot pain and I couldn't wait on shipping and didn't have time to drive down to the metroplex where there's better shopping.
Thank you for your help!
XOXO
