Hi there - I see you have received lots of great advice. I am also a pear shape & agree with all the advice already given particularly the issue of hem lengths and adding structure.

Look forward to seeing your first WIW.

Thank you so much, never experienced so much help before. When I turned 60 I realized I had to change my dress style so as not to look mutton as lamb. For me I just had to become a bit more classic. I will certainly post pictures with so much help and advice out there can't wait. Ps never even knew about the tuck. I also see the fabrics I have tried we're not draping enough.

Welcome to the forum! I am more of an hourglass but with pear as a secondary body type. I find the key to wearing fluid tops is to add structure to the outfit. Semi-tuck does wonders in this as well as high-low top. Having sleeves scrunched adds structure too. Adding a jacket on top of the fluid top also works. And of course to Suz's point the drape of the fabric is the most important.

However most of all you need to get on board with "Just Flattering Enough" attitude and adjust your eyes to a new non-conventionally "flattering" look and see a different beauty it the drape and fluidity as compared to tight and fitted.

I also second the idea of posting pictures: this was the best style tool for me!

I have pear tendencies, and I do wear fluid tops quite frequently. There are a few things that make or break the style for me. Hem length is one -- I have saddlebags so I try to choose hem lengths that do not cut across that widest part of me. Curved hems and assymetrical hems can help too.

And as Beth Ann says, semi- or faux-tucking tops helps to create that curve that makes a flattering line. I have a short torso, but I think semi and faux tucking can work for long-waisted ladies as well. A little experimenting usually reveals a tuck that works.

And as Suz says, the drape and flow of the fabric can really help a garment to fall nicely and hint at a small waist beneath, rather than just fall straight, creating that boxy impression.

And by the way, welcome! If you decide to post pictures for feedback, you'll find lots of encouraging help here.

I find a faux or semi-tuck makes all the difference, along with the belt. It defines and adds structure to the midsection of the body. I find it helpful to have well-placed shoulder seams and slimmer sleeves, too, along with drapey, not stiff or clingy, fabrics.

Welcome! I agree with Suz. I wear fluid bottoms and a structured top. I wear the top open with a tank under or something to draw the eye up and down. I run the risk of looking like I am wearing a sack if I am not careful.

Welcome!!

We have lots of pear-shaped beauties wearing the fluid fit tops (and bottoms)! The fabrication of the top will be key. It needs to drape rather than stand completely away from your body -- that way we'll see the hint of your waist in there, especially in motion. Another option is to wear fluid bottoms instead of tops (great for disguising so-called "trouble" spots) and add a more tailored topper.

Hi Angie, this is my first post. First of all In the 2 weeks I have been reading YLF I have learned so much. I first thought the blog was for young people now I see us older ones can learn much too.
My question is concerning my pear shape and fluid tops (long torso defined waist and larger hips and short legs). I am 60+ . When I wear a fluid top I look more like a big square box. Is there any way I can try and make it work.
