I've made this same mistake with a leather jacket. And a good reminder to review the archives for refresher lessons.

Thank you, a serious nugget of wisdom! My leather jacket is for outdoor wearing, but I find it looks best when I don’t close it anyway, and often wear it with a huge chunky scarf, which helps with warmth. I guess I should have gotten the smaller size! Doh! The truth hurts!

YES.

But an OUTERWEAR jacket/coat that is supposed to keep you warm and protect you from the elements MUST close and fit properly. For the rest - we wear 95% of our jackets open these days. That way they create a vertical line down the centre front of the body which has an effective streamlining effect. More comfy too.

I was looking through the archives to try to absorb some more lessons, and I found this sentence from "How to Fit a Coat":

"Unlike blazers and jackets, coats have to close and look good with multiple layers worn underneath."

Is this permission to buy a jacket even if it can't be closed? I feel like this might be a revelation. I bought a leather jacket a few years ago—the smaller size looked so much better in every way when it was open, but not when I zipped it closed. The slightly larger size fits well, even closed, but had roomier sleeves. I went with the larger, thinking, "This is how you know if it properly fits!" but maybe I'm going about this all wrong!
