I think the Maddie pants look great, but if they don't fit as well as your Express pair, then you know...NEXT!

I like the loafers without the chain detail best, as the toe is longer and less rounded.

Meanwhile, I'm at the opposite end, being unable to find skinnies that don't resemble overly long capris on me because of the loose calf fit.

ATHLETIC calf, Sveta--we call our calves "athletic", because it sounds soooo much better than "heavy"!

And you are right to send back those calf-grabbers because they'll never be comfortable and you'll always be trying to adjust the lower part of your pants to avoid saggy knees. I speak from bitter experience as another one who wonders why J Crew can't give us a touch more room in that area in their tapered pants.

The black express pants fit you like a dream and I can see how in comparison, the Maddie don't fit that well at all. Sound judgement on your part! Free shipping and returns are great for experimenting.

Una, I got your message loud and clear - typos and everything - so don't worry! I am a terrible typist myself.
Suz, I was thinking about the seams...but then decided it does not worth it. There will be other trousers for me to try on and if I have a pair of "not completely perfect fit" ones I may not be able to get the perfect ones when they come along.
Angie - exactly! I am glad I tried even if they go back (at least a free return will help me feel better). Otherwise I would keep thinking "what if..."
You know what is really funny: I think my calves was the only part of my body which did not slim down. So now they are my problematic zone for pants/ jeans fit, not my hips or thighs anymore. Do we have a name and dressing guidelines for "calf heavy" body type?

Maybe the purple will be slightly larger. No two are exactly alike. Maybe another navy in the same size would fit differently if you get a chance to try on in a store. Next.

Oh, I came to the end of this story and wanted to cry! But Una's response is the sensible one. Unless....is there any seam allowance to adjust the calf width a tiny bit? If it is such a small amount, perhaps it can be made to work.

I know what you are talking about this -- I have had the same problem sometimes with pants and it drives me bananas. So if it cannot be fixed then they must go back. And yet....

Avesta, I know exactly how you feel. I've learned to trust myself when I just don't LOVE something. It's hard she it's objectively so close. Especially with pants which are hard to fit generally. But you will always think of the "if only..." when you wear them so I think you made a wise choice.

I have decided to return the Maddie pants - as much as it breaks my heart. I just do not like the fit of them on my calves and they tend to bunch on the knees because of this. I have compared them to my black Express cigarette pants which are just 1.5 cm wider in the calf area and it makes all the difference to me. See pictures for comparison.

I still need to receive the purple pants but most likely they will go back too unless for some reason they are wider cut on the calves. Oh well - at least I got free shipping and return on this order so not a big loss.

I feel better now when my decision is made - thanks again for your help!

Thank you all for your help - you did help me to make up my mind!
Una, that's too bad about the purple. Mine should arrive tomorrow, we will see...And yes, I kept BR blazer and it is not at my Mom for alterations.
Archer, I see your point on the shoes. I also prefer the sole on the Drew but the top of the WC...why this world is not perfect!!! :-(
texstyle, the back of the pants is not snug - the only snuggy part is the lower legs on my calves. I have measure dthem and inseams are the same as in my black Express cigarette pants but lower legs are narrower and therefore they sit a bit higher with the scrunch.
Angie, I am glad the pants meet with your approval, I really like them. My only concern is snug calves, need to see how I cna live with them. They look very skinny-like on my calves, I am sure they do not look like that on you. You do not think it is a deal breaker? Also do you like how they look with those bone loafers, can they be worn with such footwear?
unfrumped, if i keep the pants I will treat them as slim cigarette pants - which is what they really are on me. So yes to longer tops and jackets and also shorter but fluid tops and sweaters with a semi-tuck. I don't think I will do a full tuck with them - it was just to show the fit. I did not see Talbot's pants, we don't have the store anymore here.:-(
I need to do a full-on outfit building session with them including the footwear but I am afraid I will not have time forthis as I am leaving on a business trip this Saturday but when i get back - get ready for a mega styling post!

Wait.......you actually have a "choice" of white shoes! That must feel terrific, since I know you have to really work to find fashionable shoes that fit well and are comfortable. Woohoo! I prefer the ones without the chain, too, but both are excellent, and suit your style.

Love the pants -- the taper and the ease together look modern to me. I like to see either slim or wide legs now --- not so much inbetween, and these are slouchy, but still slim, like Angie wears them. Looks great!

I would check the back rise when you sit. The back view looks as if the rise is barely long enough -- just a hit of "separate cheeks." I alter this in my pants all the time -- the crotch seam could be deepened by your mom in 5 minutes. Now -- it could just be the angle of the photo. If the pants "give" at all, and if sitting is perfectly comfortable, then you're probably fine as they are now.

I may be a spanner, I'm having trouble with the pants. What kind of silhouette and what tops are you going for ? Will it be more fab than other outfits you are wearing? I'm wondering if a slightly straighter, less tapered pant is better if there is a trim fit through the hip. I am projecting my own pear issues though so take that with a grain of salt. This might be a pant I would target for longer very fluid tops, so would be my version of a skinny, whereas for others, it is their "straight". In addition I had a post regarding whether shoes needed to be subtantial enough for balance--but that was more with slim pointy flats.
Anyway, what I found was that all of this was very pants-brand-style specific and very small tweaks in hip fit or taper or width or even rise could make or break it for me.

Did you see Talbot's wool pindot curvy pant? I am trying them. Will try to post a find. Also the BR wool pindot, but it is lower rise.

Definitely prefer the WC loafers as they look more modern to me. The pants look good but it's hard to see fit details in the dark color - is the back a little snug on them? You mentioned that they were already a bit snug and that would worry me.

Sveta the pants look great in size. I'm wondering what the problem with a bit of 'ice-cream cone' is (did I miss a discussion?). It means that you have shape!
Dont interpret that as - you do look in any way overly ice-creamy. You don't. You look great.
Shoes: IMO- top view the Drew's look more classic - and you seem to be more MoDERN than the look. Side on to me they win - hands down.

However - the WC look slicker and modern in the whole outfit even though a side view reveals, for me, a matronly sole ( I try to avoid that)

So despite thinking that the Drews look like a better shoe the others to me look more modern, and more like your overall style.

I sent back the purple ones for navy - couldn't match them to anything but black or grey and just wasn't feeling them. These look fantastic on you and you have a great rear view! Not sure on length. That's how the petite fit me and I will need to get the regular ones shortened. I'm not sure why regular fits me better at 5'2"!

Did you keep the BR blazer, Sveta?

Thanks goodness for YLF wisdom! Who else can keep me straight? :-)
Suz, the purple pants are due to come on Wednesday, can't wait!
And yes, you need a pair of those and you need to come out where you are going to wear them. :-)
My BR jacket is at my Mom now for alterations. I really want to see if these pants can be worn with it as a suit...

Those pants are stunning. I might just have to order a pair. Yikes. I almost never wear my trousers as it is. Could I really "need" another pair. I doubt it. And yet.

Keep those. They are very, very flattering. No ice cream cone.

I like the WC loafers better than the Drews. Good you could compare the two. I do prefer the sole/ heel on Drews, but the top/ front of the WC.

I like the Walking Cradle loafers best for the simpler look. The pants look good yo my eye. With the narrow leg they can't be too long anyway without scrunching up. What happens when you sit down in them?

I agree with Deb. Nice pants! Looking forward to what Angie says too. BTW, I don't think you could ever look like an ice cream cone!!!

The pants look very good to me and I like the length. I prefer the toe of the first loafer. The new pair is just too round.

I came home to 3 boxes today! JCrew Maddie pants in navy arrived as well as another pair of white loafers by Drew. So here are the pants and also Drew loafers compared with Walking Cradles loafers I showed you earlier.

First - the loafers. They are slightly different color, more like blushy cream rather than pearly bone like WC but both colors are lovely shades of white. I like the horse bit detail and the black block heel on Drew loafers but concerned that the toe shape is rounder and less elongated than WC toe. Both are comfy so it is a matter of style. Which pair do you prefer for me?

Now the pants. This is size 10 and I think it is the right one. In any case I cannot go lower because then the calves would be too tight - they are already snug. The length is on the border of being short - is it OK?
Can you see enough to assess the fit - unfortunately dark color does not photograph well.
I also have a purple pair on its way to m. They said backordered until end of February but then shipped them over the weekend Maybe the fit in navy will photograph better?
These pants feel very nice on and the fabric is lovely. They are the most fitted pants on my legs I have (leggings and ponte pants excluded) Do they give me an ice cone look when worn with the loafers?

Thank you for your help - please help me decide and not to make shopping mistakes!

ETA: I have decided to return the Maddie pants - as much as it breaks my heart. I just do not like the fit of them on my calves and they tend to bunch on the knees because of this. I have compared them to my black Express cigarette pants which are just 1.5 cm wider in the calf area and it makes all the difference to me.

I still need to receive the purple pants but most likely they will go back too unless for some reason they are wider cut on the calves. Oh well - at least I got free shipping and return on this order so not a big loss.

I feel better now when my decision is made - thanks again for your help!
