Thanks Angie,

Everyone else on here seems to think hourglass as well but the program goes by the lines they draw from bust to hip I guess, & mine show narrower at the bust when looking from the front. I don't really care what I am for this exercise, I just want to make sure I am buying the right clothes. Just the same as I'd rather know I'm a bigger size than I thought & buy clothes that look good on me.

I do not see pear shape at all. I see an hourglass.

There is a difference between cropped and *too* cropped. The devil is in the detail, but generally, a shorter jacket looks best over any skirt and dress length. If you like, we can help you decide which denim jacket looks best.

Hi Angie,

Thanks for chiming in & for this website:)

Yes I am in the US & have purchased the AE one along with a Levi's & a Lucky Brand, all different lengths. I will return the ones that I decide dont work. I guess my dresses at knee length still aren't long enough to do the Golden Mean of 1:2 ratio, even with the shortest jacket, which hits my natural waist. I am 5' 7". I would have to get a super crop, above the waist, & I don't know that I like denim jackets that short, nor have I found one anyway.

Furthermore, as a D or DD, though not visually huge bust IMO, the program I bought from "My Private Stylist" advises against really cropped, above natural waist jackets.

Hi Elle! I can't find the article on the Golden Mean. Perhaps you can provide a link?

As far as denim jackets go, a shorter style works best with dresses and skirts hands down. I have seen this length work on all body types and sizes. A length that is a few inches below your natural waistline is fab.

Try American Eagle if you are in the US.

Bumping for Angie.

Elle I went over to Inside Out Style this afternoon and read up on the Golden Mean. It makes sense and the visuals Imogen give certainly demonstrate this principal but I found I came away with more questions... there were a lot of what if's in my mind. As others have said I think this is a good guideline but not a rule.

Thinking about the crop jacket, as the Golden Mean suggests proportion is so important and if we get that right I suspect anyone can wear a crop denim jacket well.

Hi Elle, you have a great frame for clothes! The Golden Mean and other *rules* are great for trouble shooting when you feel like something in your outfit is a bit off, but that doesn't mean you have to be a slave to them. Also you might be fine in a cropped jacket. You won't know until you try. There are so many variables with each of us that a single guideline from a source can be misleading.

For example, I have a long neck and a small bust. Some of the advice for one of these 'body type modifiers' contradicts the advice for the other. So that's why pictures help so much. We really have to see the whole look to determine what's working and what isn't.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your pictures and posts!

You have a nice strong shoulder line and feminine curves! I'm not well-versed in hourglass judging so I'll let someone else chime in, as the style of your clothes makes it difficult to see your waist proportional to your bust and hip.

If you are feeling brave enough, please post pictures of yourself. That will help us "diagnose." You have to do it through Flickr or some similar method if you have not been a member for long enough, but once you have contributed to a few threads, you become a full member and get posting privileges.

Angie always does look fab, doesn't she? She seems to understand proportion so easily! It helps that she is a slim hourglass/rectangle, but she also knows exactly what to highlight and what to cover up.

Have you seen Angie's denim jacket blog post with recommendations? That might guide you a bit. http://youlookfab.com/2012/05/.....m-jackets/

It's true that it can be difficult to find cropped jackets. But they are out there if you search .

From your description it sounds as if you are an hourglass. In that case, cropped jackets could look super on you, contrary to what you were told. You might want to look for ones that have less pocket detailing, or perhaps cardigans or other softer fabrications, if you are concerned about stiff fabric standing out and making you look top-heavy.

Looking at the Golden Mean on Inside Out Style it makes sense. The outfits do look better when adhering to that. So with that info I started shopping for a cropped denim jacket to go over dresses.

I'm not trying to find one that goes with everything as that is not possible but, trying to find one in the correct ratios for my dresses is proving to be very difficult.

Also I was advised by a program I paid for at My Private Stylist that cropped jackets are not good for someone with a large bust. I do wear a 32DD but never feel my bust looks too big. It is the same measurement as my hip & smaller than my shoulders visually.

So if I got one that is not cropped it would look odd with dresses to my eye & would look odd according to the Golden Mean.

Now Angie always looks fab, including when she wears her cropped denim jacket & including when her ratios do not follow the Golden Mean & are closer to 1:1 1/2. I know her & I have different bodies. I'm 5' 7" IT I think with large bust. 37 1/2", 30", 37"

Angie please chime in I am exasperated!
