I guess I've had a little more practice, Alexis :0). I was born and raised there too. Did lots of business there when I was a buyer AND go back for holiday every 2 years. So at 40 - that's lots of HK shopping mileage. I know it like the back of my hand.

You're much more shopping- and HK-savvy than I am, Angie! Even though I was born and raised in this city, hehe. Thanks for your tips!

That explains it! Sogo has 10 floors I think. You were left looking at Chanel and Prada on the first floor :0)

Must go EARLY on Saturday morning to avoid the crowds.

I did go to the CWB Sogo, not the TST one. But I only browsed the first floor (blame me, I was lazy at shopping).

Just went to the Sogo website, and you're right Angie. There are LOTS of brands offered. Will have a second look soon.

Alexis, I was in Sogo less than two years ago and they are not like Lane Crawford at all! I doubt things have changed. There is lots on lower end stuff too. You must get to Causeway Bay for the best shopping.

Thanks Angie!

Everything is on sale now since it's the end of the summer. I went to Zara a few days ago and scored a pair of polka dot ballet flats (HK$119, =US$15.3). Still thinking about whether or not to exchange the black cardigan for something else (stores in HK don't have a refund policy, they only allow exchanges).

How do you guys judge the quality of a cardigan? I think mine is too light and not drapey enough. But what characterics should a summer cardigan have so that it's breezy and "durable" at the same time?

BTW, Angie I think Sogo nowadays is more like Lane Crawford... You know, Hermes, Ferragamo, etc. Do you still remember some brands that are lower-end?

Thanks.

I go back to HK every few years and still know the shopping areas like the back of my hands :0)

Stick to Euro stores and wait for sales. H&M is your best bet along with MNG, Zara, M&S.

Get yourself to Causeway Bay. There, I LOVE Sogo. And the prices run the gamut.

Maya - I think what you say is right. But I still want to diversify my options For example, almost every young lady wears an oversized tee. That's the most prevalent article sold in some boutiques, and I get very tired of them.

May K - Deal! I wish that could happen. I love Target! The basics sold at M&S are of higher quality (and a heftier price tag), but the non-basics are a little bit too mature for me. I'm always envious of you guys being able to buy clothes and shoes at Target. There are lots of US$10 ballet flats in HK, but the quality sucks! I always get blisters because of them.

Giordano doesn't offer much variety. G2000 sells mainly business wear, but I'll still look into it (basic Ts!). As for U2... I think it's shut down. I haven't seen it in quite a long time.

yublocka - I want an Old Navy too! Cheap basics, which is totally me.

Sihaya - I wish they were. Then the the vintage pieces and fun finds could add spice to my now-very-boring wardrobe without spending a fortune. Unfortunately it's not a common practice. We only have "Salvation Army Stores" here, which mostly have secondhand toys and furniture at most and sell few clothes. But will visit it soon, hoping to meet unexpected things that suit me perfectly.

After doing a LOT of online research, I find a number of fashion blogs written by Hongkongers (locals and expats included). Fortunately all are in English. Their style is not as Asian, which is good. Hope that I will get some inspiration from them.

Thank you guys!

I agree with May - M&S and Giordano are defnitely more classic than most stores in HK. I'd kill to have H&M here so I'm not as sympathetic as I'd otherwise be hehe. Does anywhere in Asia have Old Navy/Target? Might be close enough for a yearly visit!!!

Are Giordano & U2 still around? I think I remember they are like Gap or Old Navy? & I remembered G2000, which is more Classic?

I loved Marks & Spencer, would be nice if they come to the US. Can I trade you a Target for a M&S?

I know nothing about Hong Kong, but when I did my little product test at YesStyle.com, I found plenty of classic options. The models wore them in a more trendy Asian way but that doesn't mean you have to. It's all in how you wear an item, not where you bought it from.

Also, unless you pin a sign to your shirt that says "I bought this entire outfit from Uniqlo," no one will know

Alexis,
Just wanting to let you know that Angie has some family visiting right now and isn't on the forum very much for the next week or 10 days.

Hopefully someone else may have something to offer and if not, keep bumping this thread so that Angie will see it when she gets a chance

Oh and welcome to the forum!

As a HK college student-to-be who's tight on budget, I find it hard to build a wardrobe of my own style. Sure, there's lots of cheap clothes sold in HK, but they all are more of Japanese/Korean/Taiwanese style, which doesn't suit my taste.

I would describe my style as both classic and trendy. Currently the brands I'm okay with include Uniqlo and H&M, which are both affordable. The former offers clean-cut basics, while the latter provides trendy pieces. Sometimes I shop at Esprit too but it's a bit higher-end.

However, I run out of ideas as to where to shop. There's no Old Navy/Forever 21/Target here in HK, and international shipping often costs way too much for me. I think I really have to diversify the labels of the clothes I have in order to avoid looking like a mannequin. I want to have my own style and not buy everything from one or two stores.

I'm asking Angie about this since she's lived in Hong Kong, even though it's a long time ago. But I'm sure she can offer me some useful advice.

Thanks in advance!
