I love Angie's reasoned, thoughtful response.

My personal take is that I am holding on to one small (very small) platform sandal because it is my only bright coloured sandal. If I find a bright replacement later this season, I might let it go, but for now, it is fine.

I feel similarly about all the ones you showed here, by the way. I totally see their usefulness and appeal and they don't feel dated per se, in an otherwise modern outfit.

Otherwise, I am wearing and enjoying my NON-platform wedges, my short heels (Okalas) and my higher heeled cage sandals that somehow miraculously feel more comfortable than my platforms (the VC cage sandals). That is my solution to this dilemma! :)

First of all, an item is not necessarily fashionable and trendy just because it's being sold in stores. Buyers put items into stores to sell. And if people keep on buying them - buyers will keep on putting them into stores - trendy or not.

This brings me to my second point - and Tanya's point. The wedged platform sandal is a Classic, and borders on Retro. Is it dated for some - yes - like Janet - who wants to sport the trendiest sandal look with shorts, dresses and skirts. Is it dated for Tanya who wants to wear them with flares so that you can't really see them - no.

For some of my clients, we passed on platform sandals last year. For others, they are still wearing them this year.

I took a little walk through shoe departments in Nordies and L&T today and still saw plenty of platform sandals. Nothing much appealed to me in either store, except one pair of gladiators that were cut for a higher-volume foot than mine -- I suspect that if I find any more new sandals this summer, it will be online.

Agree with the flares! My flares are hemmed for heels, and the only high heels (over 3") I can wear are platforms, so I am going to enjoy my platform sandals even if they're dated

Also, like Denise mentioned, I'm still seeing platform in brick-and-mortar and online shoe stores.

I have some Kork Ease high wedges. I think they'll stay on the fashion periphery since they're kind of a classic, with a 70s retro vibe. My problem is even though they're comfortable to stand in, they're kind of hard to walk in. Here they are after I dyed them silver.

Tanya, yes! I almost forgot that flare jeans work really well with these. Not that I'm wearing any jeans while it's this hot, but when it's a little cooler, or for casual evening, a bit of a platform sandal with flares works way better than flats.

Agreeing with what many have said about preferring the second pair to the first in terms of "what's in." However, Tanya does make a good point about "summer" shoes. Sounds like you've already moved them to the donate pile. I like your other sandals that you've posted. I'm less enamoured with espadrilles, but I do think they are a summer classic and can be very useful. This is a great post. I have some wedges that I haven't worn in 2 years...probably time to donate as well....

I think that they are sort-of summer classic. Maybe they are not the "it" shoe at the moment, but not dated either. I love the second pewter pair you posted as well as the later ones.

I have kept mine. I do not wear them as frequently as in the past, but still do with some outfits. For examples, the trendy flare jeans look pretty good with such sandals.

Thanks for all the thoughts! Even though I knew from Angie's posts on the topic that platforms are not the hot style anymore, they are still quite prevalent in the stores, as Denise points out, and lots of people are still wearing them. In fact, around here I see more of them than more "current" styles, although gladiator styles are starting to take off.

I have a couple of other pairs of platform sandals that somehow feel a little more current to me -- I included photos.

1 I bought these last summer -- the Lucky Brand platforms, and I still very much enjoy them. The light metallic acts as a nude on me, and the vibe is casual enough to work with a lot of my outfits.

2 I think I've had these Antelopes three years, maybe even a little longer? I don't wear them a lot because of the high ankle strap and the high contrast dark olive color is not the easiest thing to work with for me. But I still like them. The dark shaped platform appeals to me, and the high ankles feel a bit more on-trend.

3 I got these Sperry lace-up espadrilles at a great discount at the end of the summer two years ago, I think. They replaced an old pair of espadrilles that I loved but were uncomfortable. These don't get worn a lot, but I like them and they get compliments when I do wear them. The platform is not extreme and they feel kind of classic to me.

4 These Cordanis are probably four years old, but again, somehow I still like them. I don't wear them a ton, but I did have the straps cut down by a cobbler last year when I realized the ends kept flapping around. Again, I think the black soles appeal to me.

All of these feel more secure (I don't feel like I'm going to twist my ankle) than the Franco Sartos I originally posted (which are now in the donation bag). I'm definitely moving away from platform styles, but unless I hear a lot of strong discouragement here, I think it's worth hanging onto these at least through the rest of this season. Any thoughts on these other sandals I've posted?

Uh oh, I think there might now be space on my Wall of Shoes!

As about me, I find platforms kind of scary. My feet need to feel the ground to feel steady. So I won't be wearing flatforms either!

I like 3-4. 1 and 2 look more ready to go. I passed on my platform wedges too, with one exception.

I am not happy that flat shoes are "in." I cannot wear totally flat shoes, I have really high arches. The exception is Birkenstocks. I love wearing them. I will continue to look for shoes with 1.5" heels to 3", that is a happy place for me. Besides my foot shape, I'm relatively short too so love a bit of height.

I still saw a lot of platform wedges and high heels when I was in SF a few weeks ago. I think there is still a lot of demand for wedge and platform sandals. Taking a look at the "wedges" section of Nordstrom's sandals section, look how many shoes still have a platform wedge construction!
http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/wo.....in=leftnav

When Angie started talking about platforms being out I passed mine on (to someone who was beyond thrilled to get them). I still wear wedges sometimes because they're such a comfortable way to wear a heel, but not platform wedges. I wonder if part of why you don't like the 3-4 pair is the color. Pewter just doesn't seem as current to me lately (ducking). And I say this as someone who adores pewter.

I'd sort of been wondering about that. Platform wedge sandals were one of my main summer shoes for a few years, but I started moving away from those last year and eventually got rid of most of the pairs I had left. I wasn't sure how much of that was just a reaction to me overdosing on that shape (so walkable! so lengthening!) for too long and how much was a feeling that they weren't current anymore. I think the only pair I have left is a metallic version of these for when I want to dress up just slightly for dinner or whatever and pretend I have long legs.

That said, your two pewter pairs are nicer than anything along those lines I've had. I feel like, if I had either of those, especially the second, I'd keep for another season unless I were really sick of looking at them. But I'm also pretty slow to give things up, FWIW.

I agree that I see a lot fewer platforms around than in previous years. For a while they were *everywhere*. Having said that, though, I do think that the espadrille-type sandals seem to lend themselves quite naturally to a platform, so I think you could wear something like that whether or not platforms are in.

I don't have a lot of shoes with platforms. I think I have one pair of espadrilles, one pair of pumps, and one pair of boots (the latter two are at the bottom of this post). I feel like platforms are more comfy because they seem to absorb some of the shock from the shoe hitting the ground. In general, I do prefer less "clunky" shoes, and always have, but I won't be giving up my platforms anytime soon.

Hmm I'd pass along the first pair and keep the second for semi-dressy casual weekendy types of things. It's got a nice boho vibe to it and the high back + strap around the ankle keeps it looking more current than not to me.

The second pair feels much more current to me than the first. But then again, I have uncharacteristically fallen hard for the new trends in footwear and have been developing a poison eye for platforms, so I may be biased. Then again, like someone else said, cork platforms have been reappearing for many years, so you may want to keep them around just in case? Still and all, if you haven't reached for them, I'd rather the closet space go to something I will wear.

Platforms started looking dated for me as soon as Angie started mentioning it a while ago. I am easily influenced by certain people! Of course that makes me think they are going to come back soon. I do have one pair of platform sandals though and I think I will wear them this weekend for dinner with our guests just to be contrary :-).

I'm still loving wedges -- they are so much for supportive than slender heels, but I have only one pair of platforms (see below). I probably wouldn't buy them today, but they're intentionally playful and they dress up a basic black dress. I think the pair in #3/4 still look suitably modern. If you have a replacement already in your closet, you'd be fine to let them go, if not, I'd hold onto them through the summer at least.

I have to say, I am not feeling them, but then, I am so loving the lower heeled and flat Beatle booties etc that I feel like that has trained my eye accordingly.

My foot needs a rigid sole due to hallux rigidus so basically platforms, preferably with a rocker sole, are the way I have to go, stylish or not. :( I'm waiting for Dansko Pros to be the Next Big Thing.

Love your pedi! I agree that platforms are kinda "out" right now but think that a classic cork or wood wedge sandal for summer will keep returning. I have been looking for a pair of "flat-forms" but have yet to find the right one.

If you don't love these anymore I would leave them.

I am iffy on this. I want to say I'm not feeling them either, but I love unconditionally my Lucky Abeos and know that no matter the trend, I'll still love them. What I am over is platform pumps. Sandals, I dunno . . . there is still that slight boho feel I like and this may be one of the holdout ways I enjoy seeing it.

I think I would be ready to pass on the first pair. I like the second pair.

Coincidentally, I recently wore a pair of pewter wedge sandals, also from KC Reaction and about 3 years old. I didn't feel fab in them and set them aside to purge after that one wear this season.
