Interesting, thanks for the detail Imogen! I do agree, things that looked great on me in my 20's I wouldn't even think of wearing now!

Interesting post - I do colour analysis, but not with any seasonal system, but one that has 14 different colour directions (which can then be broken down again into 42 groups), based on Albert Munsell's colour theory and using the properties of chroma, saturation, intensity, tint, tone and shade.

What you see when the colours are flattering on your skin is that you look like you're illuminated from the inside. You will look younger, slimmer, taller, more vibrant.

Yes the seasons are outdated, but colour analysis done well is actually an invaluable tool. It also helps you create a wardrobe of mix and match outfits as you don't have orphans in your wardrobe based on colour.

The problem with the seasons is that they're too limiting - if you don't fit into one of their groups, it doesn't work, I've plenty of clients who have had a seasonal analysis some point in their life, and when we do it for them now, they are really pleased with the results as they like the colours and they can see how much better they look.

Also, your colouring changes your entire life, we don't usually have the same colour hair at 20 as we did at 4, and by 40 it is often different again, and by 60 again it has changed. Along with these changes, our eye colour changes as does our skin as we may lose some of the carotene and other pigments in our skin as we age. So the colours that suit us at 20 won't be the same as those that suit us at 45.

Thank you Angie, I was trying to get a reference on my preference for browns actually. I will defiitely take that into cosideration. Appreciate your thoughts!

Ele, appreciate the referral and especially your insight on it. I will see if my local library has a copy.

JewelryGirl, I don't have any website recs for you, but I've thought of a book you might like. I have a book called Colour Me Confident, which was published in 2006 by the CMB people. Basically, it's an attempt to update the four season formula, and includes much more specific classification. Instead of four seasons, there are six dominant types, and four secondary characteristics (only two of which apply to each dominant category). Basically, there are 12 final "groups" instead of just four, and the approach seems to take into account more of the modifiers that Maya was talking about, rather than just light/dark and warm/cool, as the original CMB formula did.

The "fashion" tips in the book are laughable (I think Angie might have a heart attack if she saw some of the "after" photos), so I'm not sure it's worth spending money on. (My sister used to work for the UK publisher and got my copy out of the company freebie bin.) The colour section is an interesting read if you're interested in theory, though, so it might be worth it to see if your local library has a copy.

Sorry for my late response, JG. Tanya and Maya echo my thoughts 100%. I think it’s tricky popping your colours into a so called season because I don’t believe that colours can be seen in isolation. But I do refer to colour seasons occasionally because people on this forum sometimes like using the analogy.

That being said, and even though I don’t favour the frame of reference – you are an Autumn.

JG, I did a post last week about a Color Me Beautiful book that I saw at the library:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....?replies=1

Like I said in the post, I am not a die hard believer but at the same time I found it very insightful. Although I love browns, especially a dark chocolate color, I have noticed through experience that it doesn't look all the great on me. According to Color me Beautiful, as a cool winter, brown is on my no no list. Of course, gold is also not supposed to be a good color for me and I wear tons of gold jewelry!

Anyway, if you are looking for a book that explains the theory, I thought it was a good one.

GG - thank you, that does help! Oh yes, I haven't worn brushed gold in years - I do agree & enjoy that. That might be something fun to try again!

Ele & Maya, interesting! I knew I'd heard of it years ago. I guess I was just searching for something to validate my interest in browns & thought of it for some reason. I'm not sure about undertones - how do I know that? I do tan easily in the summer. Sometimes get a little pink if I'm out for awhile but generally tan easy. I haven't every really read or studied much on color but would so love to learn more about it. If either of you can recommend some simple sites on color that would help. There just seems to be so much out there on it & I want something simple that I can apply when shopping and putting things together. Thanks for your help!

That was pretty much the consensus in my colour theory class as well, Maya. Several people couldn't be classified, and it felt old-fashioned and gimmicky to most of us. It was a whole lot of fun, but that might have been because we weren't doing any actual work that day;) When people ask me I can say that I'm an "Autumn/Spring", but I can't say that's ever on my mind when I'm shopping or getting dressed.

I do not buy into this at all, because as many people here have agreed, I do not belong in any of these seasons. I wear warm and cool colors equally well as long as they are saturated enough. As a color theory student, it doesn't even make sense to me. There is so much more to color than just hue and temperature. There is also saturation, contrast, shade/tint, and lightness.

I find it very gimmicky. But if it helps so many people, I guess that's fine.

I guess I'm just trying to say not to put that much stock in it. If it isn't 100% clear to you, there is probably a reason for that.

Hi JewelryGirl. It sounds as though you and I are colour twins. I also have hazel eyes, brown hair, and look good in browns and olive greens. I can wear rust, but don't often choose to.

When I was in my first year of studying fashion design at university, I had a quite intensive (4 hours a week!) class on colour/design theory. On one of the more lighthearted days, my professor brought in a bunch of old Color Me Beautiful products and we all had fun getting our colours "done". I was judged an Autumn/Spring combination, which means that I can wear colours of most any value, as long as they're warm-toned. I think my personality leads me more toward the deeper Autumn colours, though.

Can you tell what the undertones in your skin are? Yellow undertones tend to indicate a Spring or Autumn, while pink ones point toward Summers and Winters. I have very pale skin, but the undertones are visibly yellow. Also, do you tan easily in the summer? That's another clue that you'd be a Spring or Autumn.

The CMB formula is somewhat dated, and I think that the way you wear a colour is more important than whether it's in your "palette". It is interesting to think about, though, and can be a good starting point for figuring out what you look best in.

I believe in the seasons approach to an extent. It is really hard to tell what season you are without a picture of your face. If browns and rust colors look good next to your face than you are probably an autumn. I am an autumn and the one thing that helps me know that is that cool grey, and any kind of pink or lavender next to my face makes me look awful. I can wear plum and taupe( a warmer grey). i can also wear any kind of tan, beige or khaki although I that many are not advised to.I do know that it works for me. I am also not great with bright white. I have a crisp white theory shirt that I will probably need to wear with a scarf. Gold jewelry is better, although I sometimes wear silver. Brushed and antiqued gold does not look cheap depending on the piece.

Shiny, no face shots. Ha - this is enough of a venture for me without that!

That's so weird about your eye's - that's why I said hazel'ISH on mine! Seems like they are more blue when I wear blue as well.

I like both silver & gold jewelry. However, I prefer the silver just because I think the golds can look cheap easy unless you have fine jewelry. That, and I love natural stones which you can easily find in silver. So - that's a hard one for me to make a call based on if you know what I mean.

I agree on the mixing/matching - I'll be curious to see your pics tomorrow especially after the banana one! I'm sure you will look stunning as usual though!

Also I'm curious as I thought I read something from Angie one-time about shoe color being similar to hair color & my hair is brown.

JG, have you ever shown us a photo of your face, because if you have, I've missed it.

I also have hazel eyes, though my kids and hubby keep insisting that they are GREEN not hazel. I don't know... perhaps my eyes have changed with age. It used to be, if I wore blue, they'd look blue. But not anymore. If I wear blue, they look green. Haircolor, if I let it go completely natural, is a dark (dishwater) blonde with lots of red (and some white hairs now too), which lightens up quite a lot when out in the sun. Like you, I love olives, because of how they bring the green out in my eyes - and often accentuate the natural red in my hair too.

Seasons can take you only so far. I think it is very helpful, however, to know whether you look best in cool or warm tones. If you prefer silver jewelry, then you probably look best in cool tones. If you prefer gold, then warm tones. Also another clue can be your lips. For example I always look best in mauve shades, which points me towards cool (blue-based) tones.

BUT I agree with Angie that you can mix and match. I was dubious about this new yellow bag, which is an "autumn" shade for sure. But since it's just an accessory and it's not anywhere near my face, I'm finding it can somehow work - even with the cool tones in my closet! But tomorrow you all can tell me if I'm delusional about that, since I'll be posting pics of various experimental outfit combos with this bag all week. The bag is the same exact color as the dress I gave to Maya - and as a dress this color is just all wrong on me. Accent color, it adds something interesting - and daring? - to the outfit, I am thinking.

Hi JG, it does sound that you are Autumn to me, especially if you can wear the burnt orange well ( no other season can). You can have your colors professionally 'done' . Btw, I do not think that Angie completely follows this season thing, since she ( and many others) beleive that whether you can wear a color or not depends on what you wear it with.

Sorry Angie, one more question for you today. How do I determine my color/season?

I was thinking "Color me beautiful" was the name of a book that went over colors & seasons but maybe not. This is what came up when I googled it. http://www.colormebeautiful.com/seasons/index.html

I have brown hair, hazel'ish eye's.

I'm wondering if I'm an autumn (or maybe autumn but not strong autumn)? I'm curious to know as people always tell me how good I look in browns & that burnt orange color. I'm drawn to the olive greens as well. I really want to know if I am an autumn from your post on another thread --- http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....?replies=4
