So I just re-read your post from a month ago, Toban, and I see you've given me a piece of the puzzle. I'm a color-lover, and I've been wondering how to create some order with all that color. Makes perfect sense to organize as you say--two accent colors that go with each other and the neutrals, and two *other* accent colors that also go with each other and the neutrals.

Thanks Angie. I am learning about color - high volume and low color contrast seem to be what works best for me and I now understand why I love bright colors on others but they never look right on me and I feel like I am glowing (not in a good way) when I wear white. I have been on a style information journey for about a year now and feel like I am back in school. All the articles and information are so interesting and once I understand the concepts, make perfect sense as to why I am drawn to certain look/colors/styles and why I have struggled with styling certain items in my wardrobe. I just love the way you explain things and make the more difficult concepts more comprehensive. Thank you for all you do!

That depends entirely on your affinity for colour mixing.

For me - who has a high affinity for colour mixing - the more the merrier. I wear ALL the neutrals accept for charcoal grey. The more neutrals I have - the easier they are to remix into outfits. I also mix brights with mid-tones and pastels. I'm a colour gal so sticking to a few neutrals and a few non-neutrals within a season would not make me happy.

On the other extreme, I have clients who JUST wear black, white and grey. Year round. That's it.

For a middle of the road solution: pick two to three neutrals and three non-neutrals for the season.

This is a very useful conversation. I'm glad for the tips on capsules and colors, and especially to have learned about the Vivienne Files!

I second the Vivienne Files site. Over the years I think she has put together wardrobes in every possible color combination, piece by piece while explaining the process. The garments she uses to illustrate are *very* basic, so you may have to picture the colors on more stylish garments, but I think it's worth the effort.

Angie`s posts have some great advice. I have also used Vivienne Files. For my wardrobe I use Olive Green, Denim and Dark Brown as my neutrals. For accent colours I use Chartreuse/Citron and Burnt Orange and for my white I use Cream. I am very flexible with the Dark Brown and have used Camel and Cognac as well.

Every travel capsule is an opportunity to experiment. For short stints this year I did:

Feb. - black, grey and blush
March - jean blue, grey, blush
May - white, grey and blush
July - white, blue, and blush

For a month in Europe I combined all neutrals-black, navy/jean blue, and grey with cognac leather (jacket, shoes, gloves).

If you like color and pattern, I suggest starting by a) keeping your bottoms neutral and tops colorful and b) having pattern in tops or bottoms, but not both.

I didn't do this, and that's how I know it's a good idea! ;)

Start with the shoes and work up from there. If you are going to bring something patterned, what colors are in it? I like white, navy and olive as my neutrals for traveling and usually seem to wear cognac or white shoes because that's the color of most of my closed toe shoes and then I can carry a cognac or navy bag.

I have two color accent capsules that go with the same neutrals. I couldn't limit to a single palette but both are pretty tight. My neutrals are navy/indigo/dark denim, medium to dark charcoal, and cream. My biggest accent capsule includes burgundy and rust; my minor accent capsule has teal, aqua, and olive. When I travel I choose only items from only one set of accent colors. The teal capsule is used more in summer. I don't have a lot of clothes and don't formally count or restrict, but this gives me both the variety I need but also tight travel capsules.

I love capsule dressing. I have used a variety of different color combinations. For decades I used black and white as my neutral colors. I added in one dominant accent color such as red or pink. With black and white, I could add in a lot of the accent colors as well. I kept my accent colors to two or three per season.

A couple of years ago, I switched up my neutrals to ink navy and white. My new accept color is a medium blue. I also have fuchsia and yellow.

There are no hard and fast rules. It comes down to what you love and what meets your needs.

The Vivienne Files does an amazing job of helping someone decide upon capsule colors. I highly recommend it to you.

Hi Sandy,

Angie is in the Netherlands this week, so she won't be around as much as usual. Perhaps bump up this thread again next Monday?

In the meantime: I think you can use as many colours as you like, but perhaps to not feel overwhelmed try coming up with a few mini capsules within your larger seasonal capsule and use Angie's advice for this (pulled from this blog post):

The first thing you need to do is choose a colour palette to simplify the mixing and matching. Neutrals are especially simple to remix, but adding the right amount of colour can look just as professional.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to the specific colour
palette you choose, but generally you need some conservative neutrals as
the base, and colourful hues to make things interesting.

For example, black, grey and white, with splashes of teal and
amethyst. Or brown, camel and cream as the base, with chartreuse and
antique blue as the pops of colour.

So each mini capsule would then have one to three neutrals and two other colours (use your favourites for this).

Think she's not around these days, but would be curious to find out, too:-). I lways love a base of bl&white(+some grey &denim) with 1-or 2 pops of brights, depending on the season.
