Thank you all again. Angie, I just love your coats!!

Elisabeth, yes, the knee length type of item works well especially if belted, slightly A-line, or worn open. I can probably use my knee length trench layered and maybe even my puffer -- I'll have to experiment with that.

Angie, you have an enviable collection of very nice coats and boots! (I just love the rust-coloured ones).

Suz, thanks for starting this thread. I hadn't really given this a whole lot of thought, but after reading this discussion I realize that I already have a knee-length trench which I've been wearing with my crops (and also a knee-length cardi) and the proportions work, so I had not noticed that there could potentially be a coat + crops proportion problem. I will keep it in mind.

(Thanks, Dana and Jaime. You're lovely as always).

Suz, forgot to include these cropped pants. Wear both with my cream or ink coat. See Finds. And YES. You need to add the more extreme coat lengths to your wardrobe - short and long.

Lisa, YES. All these photos are pictured with a 2 inch heel accept for the Prada boots which are a one inch heel. My new K&K boots are fabulous at 1.5 inches (and so are the Wood Wood shooties). I also wear my Timberland sneaks with my crops, which are flat. See pics below.

Liz, that's fabulous!

Tanya, I think you and I might be facing a similar issue -- with shorter legs vs. torso the lengths/ proportions become a bit trickier. Most of my coats are just wrong for culottes. They're mid-thigh length, a bit longer than traditional peacoat. I do have a knee length red coat but the cut is wrong -- quite straight and this seems to "bunch" a wider culotte or trouser unless worn open, which is totally impractical for me. I need a more traditional style coat, double breasted maybe, or belted, like a trench. Plus a hip-length jacket. Hmmm.

Ah, this is music to my ears. Or would be if YLF was in audio.

Ok, so while I was fretting over hanging onto stuff, I realised those lovely Cacharel flares I was thinking of purging would look just so with those boots if they were about five inches shorter, and then I'd have a reason to wear my vintage coats. It's all good. Hooray for shopping the closet.

Count me in as another person happy you have asked this question, Suz. Like a couple of previous posters, I have also found that pretty much any length coat works with cropped straights and kick flares. When it comes to culottes, I like two extremes the best: either a fairly long coat, around the knee, or a pretty short one, not longer than hipbone, like a skirt-length jacket.

We are not fully into coat season here -- but I have had a few "try on" sessions because I had the same concerns about how these new silhouettes would work with my outerwear. Just like Angie, I am finding that most of my coats (from short/cropped to mid-calf and even maxi) work just fine with my new culottes, wide-leg crops and cropped flares. I am especially liking the look of my old cape-coat (just below knee length) with these styles. I would suggest playing dress-up with your coat capsule (in front of full length mirror) and trying on the different bottoms with each coat style. That really worked for me.

Lisa, I hear you. When I'm out walking for exercise or on the super snowy days I'll be wearing lug soles or snow boots and wouldn't wear my culottes; I might wear my slimmer crops tucked in (and change into shoes or indoor booties at destination if required).

I tend to wear a 2 inch heel most of the rest of the time, though, so from that point of view, I'm good.

I'm finding this very instructive. Yet I notice that Angie's examples all feature a heel, with the exception of the last toffee puffer and chelsea boots. I love a bit of a heel all the time, and of course it works best with the wider hemlines, but there's just a period of the year when I need that solid, not too high lug sole to prevent falls.

Thank you Angie, Diana, and Dana! I think I see what I need to do.

I need a more traditional knee length coat like your ink military coat, Angie, as well as a shorter puffer for days when it's not frigid.

I like the proportions with my gilet but that won't work for me as an outerlayer because, no sleeves! :)

The slim straights I wear are probably between a skinny and a straight, Angie. They're CoH and they are not sausage casing; there's some room in the calf and they are not exactly tapered. (The blue Agnes ones look ridiculous on the model here but on me they're more like the white Elsa pair, which I also own and wear.) They work with all my current coats so it's really not an issue, as Dana said.

I also wear slim BF like the Dres at a cropped length. Plus the BR flares, the Halogen cropped flares and the culottes (denim and wool). As Dana pointed out, it is really the culottes that are the trickiest. Pretty much all the others will work assuming I have the footwear and sock layer sorted so that I'm not freezing.

Great question, Suz.

I like knee-ish length, low contrast quite a bit (same proportions as our gilet) with wider culottes. I like ALL my coats with my slimmer than culottes flared and straight crops (low and high contrast). I have worn almost ALL my coats and warm jackets with my crops so far. See below. (And I don't wear skinny crops anymore. Only straight and flared).

Great question! It would seem that in light of the fact your legs will be somewhat exposed a maxi coat would be the solution ! I feel like the slim crops are going to work with almost any "car coat."

It's the wider cut culottes that will be trickier. (I'm super visual, so just imagining all this at the moment.) Perhaps you want a little bit of a shorter coat, closer to your hip than ankle.

I'm actually probably going to give up my culottes when the weather gets too cold, as they're more 3 season fabric. And we've had a super warm fall in CO, 77 F today--I'm actually wearing the culottes today!

I admire that you're coordinating your coats with outfit. I know it's very cold where you live. I love to be stylish, but when I'm cold sometimes that goes out the window and I get the warmest clothes/coat possible!

So...as the temperatures threaten to dip here...what proportions do you think work best for coats with slim crops and wider culottes?

I fear that none of my current coats are really right. I am not against buying a new coat; I expect to be wearing culottes and wider bottoms for a while and also the slim straight crops.
