Thanks, Angie. I would LOVE to be able to buy an item and just KNOW it will work. I suspect this is a component of effortless style - having your fashion intuition so finely honed that you don't have to over-think every purchase and plan every outfit a season in advance. I appreciate the insight!

Sharon, each client is specific. They hire me to be their "head" :)

For my own style it's actually very easy. I try ALL the trends and colours that tickle my fancy at some point during a season. I always bring home "the piece" and seldom think about whether it works with what I already have because I know that it will. 80% of outfits are underpinned by modern classics - even when my outfit looks edgy, it's made up of one classic item. I will be able to glue together the trendy piece with a well loved classic basic - of which I have several. It's that simple :)

Bringing home "the piece" is an interesting process and often an emotional one. It's more intuitive than anything else because I have been eating, sleeping and drinking my work AND passion for 20 years. I trust my instincts most of the time, and when I doubt them - I ask Greg what he thinks.

But I do keep my style goals at the forefront of my head ALL THE TIME. If the piece is aligned with those goals and looks fab, it comes home with me.

I also have realistic expectations. I am not trying to wear outfits like a Shopbop model or movie star. I'm trying to look like "me" and develop my own style.

Hi Angie,
I was wondering how you go about deciding which particular items you are going to look for to buy for a season. I understand general style goals like uncluttered or modern, but how do you narrow it down to specifics ( like an item of a particular style in a particular colour)?

Having looked at the trends and selected the ones you want to try, do you then pre-plan outfits using a hypothetical purchase to see how an item will fit with the rest of your clothes? Or do you just choose the individual item and work out how to integrate it later?
I often struggle to imagine how an outfit will look if I am trying something on in-store, and wonder if you have any tips.
Cheers!
