Thank you Angie!! I really do feel hourglass but always thought since I'm more self-conscious about my hips and would love for them to be smaller that I must be a pear. I also thought that my bust (not shoulders) should be equal to my hips so that I must be a pair.

Regardless, I was curious in-light of all the discussion and I think the longer I'm on the site the more I absorb so want to dig back through your archives now on dresses for certain body types, etc. in case I want to step out of my usual pants box sometime...hee-hee. That's an area I'm NOT very daring in.

Thank you Angie & everyone who posted a response - especially Tanya for your patience with me!

Angie, I love your explanation, especially the part about art and not a science. It's so true! I think the body type categories concept is an extremely helpful tool - but just that, a tool. One tool (albeit a very important one), amongst others. It doesn't give us all the answers - and it'll never replace trying things on and evaluating items on the body and not the hanger.

I bet you'd look lovely in a dress, JG!

Thanks for the pictures JG and well done for posting. It’s not easy putting yourself out there like that and you did a sterling job. Nice that Gracey and Missy were able to help out too.

I’d like to take this opportunity to suggest to you, and to everyone else, that there is little good in obsessing with body type categories. Over analysis is not always a good thing. Finding a body type category that comes closest to your own body and following those guidelines is merely a starting point. I can’t stress that enough. Body type categories are always a problematic frame of reference because our bodies are an art and not a science. You can never fully categorize an art form! I have thought about body type classifications for years and years, and still do - after all this is my line of work and I have daily hands on experience. I have purposely kept my body type categories “loose and simple”. I hope that this information makes sense.

So in the light of my classifications JG, you’re predominantly an hourglass. I see VERY slight pretty pear tendencies from the pictures but hardly at all. Do you feel pear shaped?

Sigh sigh...thanks Maya! Maybe I used to be an hourglass & since I've put on some weight I'm a pear? I wonder if that's possible? I will be curious to hear Angie's thoughts...

It could be because you're turning sidewise just a little JG, but I get the impression you have very slight pear tendencies. But don't take my word for it;-)

Your resident photographer did a great job!

He he I think that your son is right ( how old is he) and that you are an hourglass indeed. Of course, you should wait for Angie & others to chime in. My success rate in determining body types correctly is about 80%, so I still get it wrong here and there.

Yep, the new photos are the best, you should thank your nice photographer

Hi JG, those shots are not the best, beacuse your arms are raised so one can not clearly see the relation of your shoulders to your hips, Also, it would be better if it was a full body shot. Is there any way you could get someone else to take that photo?

I do think that you are right, you are either a pear or an hourglass or somewhere between the two. I am leaning more towards hourglass, but I'll need that better photo to tell for sure.

YUK!! That was not fun!! I tried to wear some more form fitting bottoms that don't have a lot of bulky material - I thought that might be easier to tell with than jeans.

Hi JG! It would by far the best if you posted a full body shot, in tight top and jeans, arms down by the size, to determine your body shape, There is really no other way, just measurements can be misleading.

I think that Angie believes that is your shoulders ( not torso or chest) relation to your hips that determines if you are an hourglass or pear: for hourglass they are the same, for pear shoulders are smaller than hips. And obviously, since 8/X are Imogen's classifications, it would probably make more sense that she would be able to help you with that classification.

Angie, Can you help? I'm following the thread on proportions that Kari started & reading things on Imogen's site & Academichic. Here is some information to help.

Shoulders: 40-41"
Bust: 37"
Natural Waist: 30"
Hips: 41" (eek)

Length from bottom of rib cage to hip-bone is about 10-11cm. So, almost border-line long-waisted - correct?

I was always thinking pear. However, after reading on Imogen's site thinking X or 8 after doing shoulder measurements. Now, I'm wondering Pear or Hourglass.

Here's what I understand from reading your information on body types.

•	Pear – when the width of your torso is smaller than the width of your hips. You’ll constantly want to balance the difference between the top and bottom part of your body
•	Hourglass – when you are well proportioned with a shapely bust and defined waist. You’ll always want to strive to look taller and slimmer

And, figuring out how that translates to X or 8. I think X vs. 8 because I think my weight is lower on my hips. This is soooo interesting.

Please advise & thanks a bunch!!
