IK, I think the sleeve length will get in Beth's way, which she mentioned herself in the other thread. Personally, I would probably leave the length as is too.

Why does everyone want to alter the sleeves? I love how they look as is. Like the back cutout, it's a really cool, different touch.

I think both sizes work. It depends on how you want to wear it. Do you plan to wear it with a bulky top underneath? Then go with an 8. The 8 gives you more mileage than the 6 but the 6 has a more streamlined look.

I like the length shorter but that is me. I am 5'8" and a blazer that long seems too long.

Interesting about what Gaylene said about jacket lengths! I really know nothing about jacket lengths...I've been paying attention to fashion only for a year or so. And I own only one jacket, and it's not really a blazer, ha ha! (I've only recently started looking for blazers.) So I might be inherently biased toward a shorter length simply because shorter tops look better on my short (5'2") stature. I'm glad others have commented on the length also, so that you can get other feedback.

I have been after this length in jackets for several years now - I think it is perfect!
If sleeves can be altered and size 8 feels better then this is the right size to go for. I know that for myself I am reaching for jackets which are not overly tight, they just feel better.

The 8 is the better overall fit, but if you can't get the alterations you need, then neither one may "get you". I would not get the 6 just for the sleeves. It looks more "skimpy" than it should. I think it's not just about unbuttoned or buttoned though I would say it's hard to buy a great investment blazer you can't really button--that's something I might do for novelty items or inexpensive jackets.
So a little ease in the jacket--not swamping you but not looking strained in any way--is part of elegant fit and is more graceful, to my eye.

Ah! Back to see that Angie has confirmed my initial impression on the 8. I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you that is the one I would have bought if it were me.

I also think the length is a non-issue. Yes, it is longer than the shrunken lengths we have been seeing of late. But that's okay. It's the same length as my Reiss jacket (I have the one Viva has.) I'm 5'4" (or maybe 5'3" and a bit) and I worried it would feel "too long" -- and even Angie worried for a minute that maybe the stance was a bit low on me, but it actually works really well on me. I do tend to wear it with less high contrast bottoms (though I've been known to wear it with white denim as you do to show it here.)

For myself, with my body type, I think there is a place for jackets of many lengths. I like a shorter, shrunken jacket also and wear it as easily with pants as with skirts. This longer style really works best with pants.

OK, this is just my two cents again, but I think that the popularity of the short, shrunken jacket fit for the past few years has made it harder to adjust to the classic, tailored fit. The length of the Smythe is a classic blazer length that finishes at the low, not high, hip. The back cutout looks perfectly positioned--any higher and the waistband of your pants would interfere with the cutout staying flat on your body when you moved.

Lisap makes a good point about a classic blazer needing to fit when buttoned to show the design to its best advantage. Trying to turn a classic blazer like the Smythe into a shrunken blazer look is like trying to turn a BF jean into a skinny. Both are legitimate styles, but moving against the designer's original intent throws the design off, in my opinion.

I think I too would go with the 8 and alter the sleeve length ... the 6 looks just a tad TOO perfect when buttoned, if that makes sense - i.e. a slightly thicker top underneath, or bloaty day would throw it off. The 8 is still very flattering and certainly does not look big or loose, but it does look like you have a little more breathing room. My feeling is when they are that close, the bigger option is generally more slimming. Just my opinion; I'm surely no expert! Good luck, it's a great blazer

I think the blazer looks good on you and both sizes are very similar except for a little extra fabric on the sides of the larger size.
You need to test run it really well before deciding. Make sure that if you keep one it does not restrict or make your arm movement or your shoulders uncomfortable. The best way to figure it out is by wearing it.
It's harder to decide if the garment is pricy because it is an investment and you want it to be the right one for you.
Best of luck with your decision. The blazer does look great and the style is different from the usual.

Eliza, the jacket is buttoned on the photos of the back. A little wiggle room makes sense, especially with various under layers.

Gaylene, that's a good point about it being a classic fit. I'm used to wearing shrunken blazers, so I I think my eye is adjusting. That said, Gigi brings up a good point about proportions and being cut into half. It's part of what's making me hesitate.

Gigi, being Miss Supercritical is absolutely welcomed! This must be a 10 (preferably an 11, LOL) to keep and I just don't trust my eye enough to make a decision. Thanks for some really good points. I think I'd prefer the blazer to be a inch or so shorter. I think.

Lisa, your experiences are insightful and very helpful! I'm a blazer girl too, and tired of struggling with fit, and it seems that blazers are one of those pieces that must fit very well to look right. :)

I most definitely prefer the 8 on you. I have a Smythe jacket, and, have been a long-time blazer wearer.

The one biggest mistake I (hopefully) used to make was buying them a size too small thinking that because I only ever wore them open, that the shoulder was the only thing that had to fit. Only after seeing pictures and looking at them with a new eye did I realize it was a mistake to buy that way, and that a blazer should fit and look perfectly fitted both open and closed. In my case I think it was my ego not letting me buy the bigger size too, which is something I worked for ages to overcome. But that has nothing to do with anyone but me:)

I know it's hard to get perspective with Smythe's sizing being so weird too. Mine is a size8 -which is two sizes larger than I normally wear!

So , sorry for digressing into me me me - you look great in this jacket, I am truly confident it will remain a classic, and their jackets are worth their price. The front length is a non-issue in my eye - looks perfect, and have your tailor shorten the sleeve, and away you go!

Personally, I prefer the 6 by a tad. It seems to have less excess fabric around the sides of the torso, especially when viewed from the back.

Having said that...I am going to be Miss Supercritical here, since it is what's requested. I do think that the blazer is too long in the torso. It is an awesome blazer, but I think that the longer length on your frame makes it look only so-so. I am short waisted myself and often have this problem, which is why I don't even bother shopping in the misses' dept. anymore—the clothes, even if not ill fitting, look just so-so and never awesome. And I think that the length of the blazer comes awfully close to cutting you in half, which usually doesn't result in very good proportions.

I did a search on Google (Google image search) for "smythe" and "blazer," and a lot of pictures of this blazer come up. All of them show the bottom of the blazer a few inches above the crotch point, and I think that that makes the blazer look much sleeker.

Again, I don't think this is a *bad* fit at all—but I don't know that it's a 10. If it were me, and I were going to be dropping a lot of money on the purchase, I would want it to be absolutely perfect. So sorry to be the naysayer!

I'd go with the 8 and have the sleeves altered if you want a perfect fit because the Smythe jacket is a classic tailored, not a shrunken, fit. The shoulders look good in both jackets (at least from what I can see in the pictures) but the 6 pulls across the bust when buttoned. The size 8 fits nicely across the bust and falls straighter in the back when unbuttoned.

That is a gorgeous blazer and you look smashing in it!

The jacket is beautiful and you wear it well. Leaving the easily remedied sleeves out of it, if you want to wear this buttoned on occasion, I prefer the 8. Is the button fastened on the photos of the back? I can't tell if it's the screen, but I may be seeing a bit of fabric pull in the 6 near where the labels are hanging at the side seams. It can make for a less smooth line and the back of that blazer is amazing to showcase. I don't mind the length at all; it works well with pants. It sounds like trying it with a range of tops could help you decide. I find blazers with any pull quite uncomfortable over time, so I prefer a little wiggle room for layers. Best with the decision. YLF!

I'm going with my gut and prefer the 6. I'd listen to the experts, though, since blazer fit is way out of my comfort zone.

Suz, I haven't tried it with other tops yet, and I definitely need to. I'd mostly wear thin knits with it, so nothing bulky, but I still need to do a test run. I've just been avoiding taking my sweaters out of summer storage! In general, both sizes feel similar in the shoulders: not a problem for me but I can see why this brand isn't an option for anyone remotely IT.

Yes, I can understand that. My very first impression was go with the 8, to tell the truth-- I mean apart from the sleeves. To me it would come down to which felt better when I moved. Also, have you tried it with a variety of top styles?

I did confirm with Saks that they'll alter the sleeves, so I can have them taken up if I end up keeping one of them. I think I prefer the 6 too, but really wish it wasn't so tight when buttoned. Hm.

So tough to compare!! I definitely prefer the sleeve length on the 6. If the shoulder fit is the same (did you do a movement test, too?) and you generally wear your jackets unbuttoned, then it is probably the way to go -- as I understand it, this jacket is meant to be tailored. But comfort is crucial so if it is bothering you anywhere, the 8 may be better after all (with altered sleeves).

A gorgeous jacket and you look amazing in it!
