I rather like the enormous blanket scarf look, although I don't have any myself. Probably it appeals to me because I have been feeling so cold lately!

There is a street performer that I often see in my town who has this look down, I think. He is often literally wearing a wool plaid throw blanket as a sort of scarf-cum-cape but somehow he manages to make it and his rigger boots look cool. I guess anyone looks cool when they are playing serious funky bass all day long.

Scarves were a mystery to me until I moved to Europe. At first I thought everyone was wearing them because it was cold, but I quickly became indoctrinated into the cult of scarf. Most of mine are the long pashmina variety but I have a few square ones -- they don't get worn that much because my husband always tells me I look like a flight attendant or a bank teller in them!

Pashminas are great for travel. I almost always carry one now, even in the summer -- a lightweight one makes a great beach cover-up tied around the waist!

Scarves are basic to me. A basic practicality.

I think, though, longer silk scarves that just dangle from your neck are pretty out. Scarves, basically, that aren't doing anything.

I often think that in decades to come, fashion parodies of the twenty-teens will feature ginormous scarves looking like blankets tied around ladies' necks and covering their torsos!

Hi Beth Ann --

I'm a clone of T-Rex:

>>When I was younger, I found scarves to be rather frumpy. Now I love them, and in some cases I think they make me look more youthful. I find that kind of funny, now that I think about it.

It helped that a lot of the younger celebrities started getting gifted with -- and thus seen in -- those large lightweight scarves. The scarf industry owes a lot to Jessica Alba!

While it'll be interesting to see what the next Scarf Trend is (because there will be one) I like wearing a variety of scarf weights, shapes, and materials.

But then I wore a lot of single color outfits in dark neutrals for a lot of years, and I still do.

Scarves let me revert to my comfort zone yet add a dash of boho luxe (silk/velvet scarves), Isadora Duncan-ness (hello long trailing scarves), retro (I like to think Grace Kelly with Cary, but probably end up more Pinky Tuscadero with Fonzie) etc depending on my mood.

Been on the road all day, so I was so happy catch up with the wonderful additions to the thread! I appreciate the links some of you posted, and your perspectives are full of well-honed YLF wisdome! Many of you are very elegant scarf wearers, indeed!

I realized that all my scarves are of the longer variety --- no squares or smaller silks. I have larger, more modern ones, and I'm finding that I like the way these look, but not so much the "heat" of them indoors. And sometimes I'm hiding behind the fabric.

Still.....the scarf is so lush, romantic and polished. And I'm a girl who loves to feel fabric --- silky, soft, nubbly.

I sound like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof......"And on the other hand...."

Not sure how my scarf story is going to end. But I'll post it when I know!

I'm a big fan of scarves as the detail to an otherwise solid outfit. I wear my scarves most often in cooler months to keep me warm and to add some interest to the outfit. In warmer months I do ten dto wear them less, instead replacing them with necklaces.

For styles, I think the chunky scarves are more trendy right now versus a silky scarf tied in a classic way as the one pictured above. But for me, classics are alays instyle, even when they aren't mainstream.

I'd be curious to see Angie's examples of frumpy scarf style.

To me, it seems like the statement scarf has been trending, and smaller scarves have been out of the picture. I know that I haven't bothered with a small scarf in years, although I have kept my collection since many were my mom's and are sentimental to me, and will likely come back into fashion at some point.

I am getting more judicious about whether to add a scarf to any given outfit, and many times in the winter, I end up putting one on in the morning, only to leave it off most of the day unless I'm outside in the cold a lot. I still love scarves and will not be giving them up anytime soon.

Scarves. I put one on and mostly then take it off. Maybe I am lulling myself into believing that this means therefore, I am wearing 'less'??

I think that the 'not to scarf' moment is circling.

I agree with lots of you too, on your reasons for all the pro-scarf comments. Think there are distinct categories of scarves.

The one I think is endangered is the voluminous, often printed, worn cowl large - in various forms and anything with ALGO.

Beautiful woollen scarves for warmth, the elegant neck icon knot (like the post picture) in various sizes, floppy little female 'bow ties' and an artwork scarf like a Chanel, IMO have never really been anything other than pretty fab, and really don't essentially change in themselves. Funny things, scarves.

Hi Beth-Ann! if these pics below - mostly taken at various recent fashion weeks (the oldest is 6 months old) are any indication, the scarf, like the trench coat, is not going away anytime soon. And if it's Giovanna B. or Ulyana S. deciding to wear one (see links below), I sure don't need any more convincing. There is something a tad retro about a scarf, as you say, but I do think that is part of the appeal. I like to see looks that are not just composed head- to- toe of this season's items, but have a touch or two of something unexpected thrown in - so as not to look too predictable, too formulaic or too copycat. A scarf fulfils that role beautifully.

I'm huge on scarves. In fact I've built a sort of mini-collection varying from silk scarves, to chunky infinity scarves to basic cotton ones to animal prints and so on. I think scarves are the quickest and easiest way to add interest to an outfit, and they are by far my most favourite accessory. Recently, I've been noticing a lot of printed scarves in light material like chiffon and cotton. I like the scarf in the photo and it reminds me of a more "classic" look.

I think all cravats are classic. Some scarves are very trendy at the moment - like the BIG scarf wrapped around your neck so that you can barely see the outfit type of look, and chunky infinity scarves are huge.

The scarf I wore in today's outfit - WHICH CAME OFF - is a classic tied in a trendy way.

I also think that some scarves can look extremely frumpy.

Beth Ann, the scarf photo you've showed is lovely :)

Suz, I too had to wear a scarf walking outside today because it keeps me warm. But it's not part of my outfit when I take my coat off - if you know what I mean. It's *almost* like gear and not a statement outfit piece.

I think scarves will always be cool, if worn well. For myself, I find them a little claustrophobic, so I only wear them if freezing my neck region is the other option. Ha. But they look great on lots of people. The one you posted is very nice.

And thank you, Beth Ann! I'm very good and finding reasons to keep things, which is a bone of contention with my BF who wants me to purge. In this case, however, I'm sincere about the utility of scarves. :-)

Oh, thought of another use/reason for a scarf. You could use a patterned scarf to pull together other pieces that you are wearing if they don't quite seem to go together. For instance, a skirt, top, and jacket all in different solid colors would probably intimidate even me. But if I have a scarf that incorporates those colors, then I use it to unify the outfit. Likewise, if you find yourself bored with your wardrobe, you could grab a colorful patterned scarf and build an outfit around it.

I agree scarves aren't going anywhere. I remember 15 years ago when neckerchiefs were the popular length. More recently throwing a mini blanket with fringe around your neck is the thing to do (This is great for the movies when the AC is on North Pole). Unless they've been worn threadbare, lost, or stolen I have every scarf I ever bought. I see no reason to get rid of them.

I think what changes with scarves is how they are worn. I think the reason the trend has stuck around so long is the warmth and usefulness of a nice blanket-y scarf. (The benefit of warmth without looking like a hobo).

I also noticed that with dressier scarves I have upgraded from poly blends to silks because the luster is so beautiful and they never fade.

Not sure how they are trending but I am seeing quite a variety of types in the stores. Of course we are in warmer months so there are a lot of smaller, lightweight scarves around at the moment. I do like a bulky scarf but I also like the way the one in your pictuure is tied, and I think this would look lovely on you Beth Ann. Scarves can be a bit maximal but I do love how a statement scarf can be thrown on over a very simple monochromatic outfit and it just lifts the whole look.

I forgot to mention something that I've learned to rely on! Large scarves, like the pashminas, are great because you can just stuff 'em into your bag and take them with you if you don't know what the temperature will be like wherever you are going. And it's nice to have something to offer a friend if she is chilly, but didn't plan ahead like you did.

Such thoughtful replies!

Tex and Dana: I see the classic style in this silk scarf, too, and I like the more modern print and color palette. I'm not sure if I'm moving toward less adornment (thinking of Una's recent post) or not.

I'm particularly thinking of lighter scarves for transitional weather --- and Jyoti mentioned the large frothy scarves --- I'm seeing these too.

Suz -- I think your experience is echoed across YLF -- sometimes less is more. Also, since I favor open necklines in all but the deep of winter, perhaps I should play with layering simple necklaces for a little brightening?

T-Rex: You have a lot of great ideas! The Hepburns (Audrey and Kate) are my current muses, and I can see them wearing scarves in many of the ways you mentioned. Of course, theirs were probably Hermes!

Scarves, IMO, are a classic. Sometimes they will trend, but they are never outdated. I commonly run warm, so I rarely wear them as part of an actual outfit, although I wear them more or less daily in the fall and winter, and I often leave them on when I remove my coat, so I guess they become part of the outfit. I don't need anything other than silk to keep me warm, even in winter, so I use my silks for everything. Indeed, they are a kind of addiction for me, and I usually buy at least one each fall/winter season. On trend or not, my scarves aren't going anywhere!

When I was younger, I found scarves to be rather frumpy. Now I love them, and in some cases I think they make me look more youthful. I find that kind of funny, now that I think about it.

I love scarves because it doesn't matter if you gain or lose weight, or get older, or if clothing styles change. Scarves themselves are pretty much timeless. It's one of the few vintage items that I hoard without feeling guilty about it. I have quite a few that were passed on to me from my mother, her sister, and various other relatives that were cleaning their closets.

I don't always wear them around my neck or shoulders. I sometimes use them as belts, wrap larger ones around my hips, tie them to the handle of my bag for a little flair, wrap them around hat brims to change up the look of the hat, or thread them through a ponytail holder and then around my ponytail and tied in a bow. It's a little bit Sandra Dee to do that, I guess, but I like it. One thing I haven't mastered is wearing them on my head, either as a covering or as a headband. They always slip.

In addition to the silky vintage scarves and the wooly warm winter ones (some of which were hand knit by a friend), I've also stocked up on a bunch of pashmina type scarves in as many colors and patterns as I can find. I keep a few at work to wrap up in when the room is too cold for me. And they make great wraps over bare shouldered outfits when the temperature drops, or I enter an overly air conditioned building.

I think scarves are almost always 'in', but the type of scarves that are trendy change.

Right now I'm seeing lots of frothy, light cotton scarves in lighter colours. I think although the material is light, the scarves themselves are large in terms of amount of material and smaller scarves are not as on trend.

Well, Angie left OFF her scarf in this morning's post, and she, Inge, and I - while scarf lovers - feel less desire to wear ours these days. Well...truth be told, I DO wear mine, almost every day....but the reason has to do with a need for neck coverage or to bookend because I don't have the right tops. I would prefer to be doing without them (except for reasons of warmth.)

Having said that, I love scarfs, and will probably go back to them for the winter and fall months again...and won't purge any of them. And the one you linked to is gorgeous.

I can't speak to how they are trending, but it seems that is more the way they are worn and tied that changes rather than to scarf or not to scarf.

Not Angie of course but I love the way the scarf in the image you included is tied and I much prefer this style over the more bulky large scarves. Very pretty and sophisticated!

So......How are scarves trending? Some of us (Victoria and Astrid come to mind) clearly choose scarves to make a statement, but I'm a real lemming in this area.

I've been inspired by Audrey and Katherine (Hepburn) recently, and I can certainly play with their takes on scarves for awhile, but I want to avoid being caught in too much of a "retro" look.

What about something like:
