Thanks everyone, and Gaylene thanks for the detailed definitions, I always love to hear the actual definitions and I think I had heard that about "citron" being a different fruit from "lemon". Ultimately color names for clothing are assigned by marketing people who are not necessarily following the literal definitions. Good to have ALL the info!

In my mind, citron is a s,giggly greens yellow, and is clear and crisp.
Chartreuse is a slightly blackened version... a “shade”.

I gave my husband this jacket for Christmas. He had a black one and wanted something bright when he walks the dogs at night. The color is called “fluid green”. I hate the names they use. Anyway, I don’t know if it is citron or chartreuse or neither, but I can definitely see him at a distance, so mission accomplished!

Well, this is me putting on my pedantic professor hat, but the English word “citron” in English actually refers to a different fruit than the English word “lemon”. The citron is is a very thick skinned citrus fruit with a dry pulp which is used primarily for its preserved rind in cooking or, more often, baking. It is one of the oldest citrus fruits and supposedly also had medicinal uses in ancient times.

As a novice painter, chartreuse is the color I get when I mix yellow with green to produce a bright light yellow-green shade which resembles the greenish liqueur called Chartreuse. Depending on the amount of green added, the color can skew to either a yellow chartreuse or a green chartreuse. Citron, on the other hand, refers to the darker yellow-green color I get when I mix orange and green—producing a shade which resembles the deeper greenish yellow of a citron.

In Danish, German, Norwegian and Swedish, though the word is spelled in slightly different ways (citron, Zitrone, sitron), it always means "lemon."

Thanks for all the inputs, I think I now understand what this color is. It's not a color I 've ever liked with my skin tone, but I could see trying it as a little bit in a pattern or otherwise away from my face.

FYI tanstaafi I found the definition of chartreuse by doing a simple google search, and some of the definitions say it was named after the liquor by the same name that happens to be that color. A circular definition...not much help there!

Viva I like the idea of "sister" colors...or maybe fraternal twin colors

Thanks Angie!

It's funny how terminology for colors changes over time...what we now call "neon" was called "dayglow" when I was a teenager. In another generation there will probably be another new term.

I tend to think of citron as a clear colour with more yellow, and chartreuse as a teeny bit murkier and more green. Not sure if I can find examples to back that up, though.

What Suz said! I think of citron as having a sharpness and depth/ brightness without being neon. But as always there are gradations. Plus you can’t rely on what the clothing maker has “ named” their color .
If one is really color- focused then there’s the search for one’s exact or favorite shade of any particular color.

Where did you look up the definition of chartreuse? I’m not really sure where citron fits in the scale of yellow/green as I don’t wear that color, but I have several other colors I’d be curious about knowing what they really are and how they compare to other simililar colors (burgundy, maroon, plum, wine, etc)

DD and I refer to it as “funny yellow green”. We both love the color and collect it for our wardrobe. If you look up a picture of the fruit, it looks a lot like a lemon, only a bit lighter in the color of flesh, with a hint of green.

I think chartreuse is perhaps a bit more to the green end of that limey yellowy green spectrum and citron more to the yellow and veering more towards the neon (though not true neon). But that's just my personal imaginary view of them.
