Ha, I guess I am a lucky one with my London Fog trench! The belt has a loopwith a button on the inside which fastens to one of the trench belt loops which is double. I don't know how to explain that better but it allows to wear the trench open and belt stays in its place.

I just saw an older WNTW with the trench tied in back. It looked nice but I think it depends on a lot of things like how thick the belt is and how the trench falls when the belt is tied.

I love my RL white denim safari jacket. The belt goes through a hidden pocket across the back so you can take it out if you don't want it on a given day and it looks like it was never meant to be belted.

I have the same dilemma in situations when wearing a trench closed is impractical, but carrying it on my arm would be awkward.

(For example: I'm shopping on a rainy day and running in between stores that have outdoor entrances. The stores are quite heated so wearing the trench closed while inside is too warm, but I don't want to fuss with carrying it when I am also trying to pick up other items.)

Honestly, I haven't found a solution that works better in these situations than knotting the ends behind me. Leaving the ends loose seems sloppier, and the belt sometimes will fall out of the loops. Taking the belt off altogether would be fine if I did so at the beginning of the day before leaving home, but it's a pain to have to take it off and put it back on mid-way through an excursion.

I'll be looking at this thread for better ideas!

I have to laugh--this is why I never buy jackets with belts :). I wear my coats open a lot (e.g., when I'm in the car, or in and out of it running errands) and I can never figure out what to do with the belt situation.

I find when I leave the coat open and let the belt hang, it starts sliding out on the side where the heavy buckle is. I usually loop the end (with holes) around the loop and let it hang like that, so it can't be pulled in by the buckle end.

Usually when I wear a trench it's cool enough I can leave it tied but I do have it come up where I want to leave my safari jackets open because our weather fluctuates so much from morning to afternoon. I tried the back knot on one of them and because of where the loops are it bunches up. Is it permissible to just leave the jacket open and let the belt hang?

I gather each side of the belt and tuck it in each pocket or I simply leave the ends hanging on each side, if the belt is not too long.

I can see why you would need to wear a trench open, especially if the weather changes during the day. I notice that often times, if it gets a little warmer in the afternoons. If that's the case, you end up overheating, you know?

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I don't really know why you would wear a trench coat open...? If it's warm enough to go without closing it, I'd just wear a light jacket or blazer.

I guess I haven't really thought of any other way to keep the belt from coming out of the loops. I don't really like tying it in front of an unbuttoned coat.

Tying the belts of your trenches at the back with square notes is not a great look in my opinion. Sorry Jane of waves :(. It's much like ladies with beautifully styled hair who insist on pulling it back in an untidy pony tail. I might be alone on this but I vote nay on this one.

Of course, style is subjective and this is just my opinion.
