Welcome to the YLF Dianna:-) and Wow, your climate sounds really challenging for your work requirements. I personally don't have experience in those at all but think a couple of loose shirt dresses can also work. Fine cotton canvas, uni or block printed/colored are always dressier & a stylish hat!:-) Add some bling to the feet (I personally adore gems or metallic bling on sandals) and keep some statement jewelery at your desk (think it can be heavy to wear outside in the heat) and you'll always look fab!

Jussie, thanks for the suggestion. I love wearing dresses and skirts in summer. Currently, I have only two summer skirts that fit, but it seems that there will be several options available this retail season, so I will keep my eyes open.

The Cat, I have already bookmarked both of Brooklyn's posts. I will even look into the archives of her WIWs from past summers, since she has fantastic summer style. I will also check past summer WIWs from Bijou for inspiration.

Bonnie, I see you live in Arizona, so, yes, we have similar temperatures in the summer. Those tops are really nice, I specially like the last two. May I ask what kind of bottoms you wear with these tops?

I live in the desert where we have 5+ months of 107F days. I like to wear flowy tops for moderately dressy occasions. These three get a lot of wear.

Wow your summer is intense! No wonder it's difficult to dress for. Just one suggestion; have you considered a short sleeved chambray shirt tucked into a cotton print skirt? When I say chambray though I mean the thin floppy/modal type of chambray. Can be dressed up with jewelry and shoes. That particular combo has been a go-to for me this summer.

Ok, I am finally able to answer. I am finally home, but I arrived with the flu. I am feeling a bit better now.

Bijou, those are really good ideas, that cape jacket is gorgeous, and it looks like it is a very practical and versatile piece. I would like to find a similar one, although I think a longer length would work better on me.

Suz, I always say I like cold weather, but there is cold, and there is cold like Canada. I guess what I really mean is that I like cool or coldish weather. Those -40 Celsius temperatures are beyond my imagination. When I lived in Chihuahua, there were days when we got subzero temperatures during Winter but nothing close to -40. Probably -10 at most. One Winter a few years ago we were at -19 for a couple of days, and there was chaos. Water lines broke, bottled water shortage, no electricity in certain parts of the city, etc... So, I cannot imagine your harsh and long winters, and still you always look so stylish.

Zaeobi, it's a blessing that your skin does not get burnt easily, specially when you live in a climate with very hot summers. I thought I was the only one who could not do skinnies on summer, since here many women wear them year round.

@Dianna Ah I see, I guess I'm lucky that I tan easier than I burn (only been burnt once in my life, & that was after 5+ hours of sunbathing lol!) I wonder if clear or transparent footwear could keep you covered whilst not getting you burnt?

Lol I feel you on the skinnies - I only own one pair of dark wash, stretchy, skinny jeans that I wore today because it was finally cold enough to be in thick denim. In the summer, I just want to be in loose & airy natural materials, without having to fuss with buttons & zippers & thick seams. I don't know how people can wear jeans casually for lounging around - my body is too soft for that! Lol maybe that is why the only other 'jeans' I have are actually bootcut trousers in a denim appearing material (but not actually denim). Give me stretchy leggings over jeans any day of the week!

Zaeobi, I am lucky enough that for my workplace almost anything goes. I can wear sandals, but I limit their use during daytime to April-May and September-October, when it is not as hot, in order to prevent my feet from sunburn (I wear sunblock daily, even on my feet). I think my feet and my arms are the most sensitive, since I can't tolerate heat nor cold well. On the other hand, my legs can tolerate cold and or heat better. I can wear skirts with bare legs as well as the heaviest denim pants both under the sun and/or freezing A/C, as long as they don't touch my skin too much (no skinnies for me during summer, at all, though I can wear leggings if they are lightweight). As for fibers, I understand what you say about cotton and linen getting wrinkled, that's why I try to use blends for the most part (containing both natural and synthetic fibers).

That's a really long summer...I can only imagine....

No wonder it's tough and gets boring sometimes.

I like the idea of a gilet (very lightweight) for work...I wonder if it is possible to find such a thing....

Our winter is equally long but slightly more variable. Though when you get below zero it doesn't much matter how much below...you need to be fully covered anyway. And you need to wear footwear that can handle slush, salt, snow, dirt. (Boring black footwear, in other words...sigh...)

Dianna, I live in Western Australia, and we have a long hot summer (only 3.5 months, rather than your 5). I am fortunate to work in air conditioning that is set so my male colleagues can wear business suits and ties comfortably. Therefore, whilst it can be 40C outside, it will be 22C inside. I wear layers and love cotton / natural fabrics. I have a number of sheath dresses and skirts that just skim my body and are not fitted and then I pop a jacket over the top. My cape jacket is the coolest to wear because the open sleeve keeps the sun off my arms but it is open. I tend to keep my legs bare and wear dressy sandals to work. Wearing light colours seems to help me feel cooler too. A selection of what I wear is below. I wear the lace skirt with a cotton blush singlet top and white jacket and a long strand of pearls.

Fashintern, yes, heat here is way over 100 Farenheit in the summer, we don't get as much humidity as other places in the Mexican Pacific (we are in the Sea of Cortez), but we do get more heat. Imagine southern Arizona heat (we are kind of close to the border), plus add some humidity, that's our temps down here, kind of similar to San Jose del Cabo/Cabo San Lucas, if you've ever been there.

I second Brooklyn's advice - just wanted to add that I also sometimes use a belt to create a 'faux welt' with tops that are a little too long. I'll fold the hem & then 'prop' it up slightly above the belt, so that the belt keeps it in place. Sort of like a cross between a half tuck & a welted band, if that makes sense?

The most important thing to remember about summer layers is the fabric. Natural fibres like cotton will keep you cool, but 100% cotton or linen is likely to wrinkle more, so you need to be at peace with that. Personally, I love wearing silk since (as you've probably already figured out lol) I sweat a lot, but you may find that you may be able to stomach a synthetic blend (such as viscose) that would make it easier to achieve draping & appear polished.

I also prefer going for fitted but not tight layers in summer, so that there is some figure definition but the material isn't touching your skin too much.

Do you know which parts of your body get cold easily or can tolerate the cold more? For me, I need to have my feet out or I boil (luckily my workplace tolerates open toed sandals, but if yours doesn't you could try perforated or D'orsay style footwear instead). Some people need to have their arms out in order to feel cool enough, but I need to have at least my elbows covered. I've found a good compromise in 3/4 sleeves for that. See what works for your body parts & apply accordingly. Good luck!

Yes, finding tops that are the right length to be worn out over skirts is a challenge. Another trick I use with some longer knit style tops is to tuck part of the hem underneath the top (without tucking it in) so as to shorten it and then just to slightly semi tuck it at the back so that it holds. I find this infinitely more comfortable in the heat than actually fully tucking in the top. But the fabric must be stretchy for it to work.

I could try a version of that, Jenni NZ. You guys are the best at giving fashion advice. It's odd, but when I think of "layers" I either thought winter layers of any kind, or summer loose and flowy layers. Your advice reminded me that not all summer layers need to be completely loose and flowy, they can be more "fitted" layers, but not necessarily too fitted or tight.

Hi Dianna, wow, 35 degrees C every day, no wonder that's hard to dress for. I would wonder about wearing a fancy singlet or tank eg I have a gold sparkly one, that I *could* be professional in with cropped pants, and then a sheer printed top over with elbow length sleeves so that the singlet/tank showed through. The sheer top could be removed if needed eg for an event that day, and more jewellery and sparkly shoes put on. And then a cardigan of some sort, or a looser bomber jacket, layered over for aircon. Might have versatility.

Rachy, I think I will become a member of team summer puffer for office wear.

Lynn, I have been looking for a kimono since Angie posted about them last summer, and even shared her client Joan final outfit. None I tried on seemed to work, and now I know why. I was looking for a kimono in the stricter sense of the word, and tried on mostly full length, very lightweight ones, with colorful prints. They did not seem to work with my office wardrobe. Now I know why they did not work. I should have looked for a "kimono type or kimono inspired jacket", like you suggested. Thanks.

Brooklyn, wearing a light scarf over my arms is an excellent idea. I already own a few summer ones, and will keep my eyes open for some interesting colors and/or prints. Like you, I also find it is not easy to find woven tops that are short enough to wear untucked, and sometimes I have to size up so that longer tops fit my hips. Shortening them is a good idea, not only to wear them untucked, but maybe I could avoid having to size up to accomodate my hips. I do wear jewelry almost daily, and try to keep my footwear interesting, but I will try to look for ways to add more variety there. Also, I will follow your 30 x 30 challenge with interest, as well as look for your summer WIW from previous years, for inspiration.

Cee, I know, I need heavier jackets for summer A/C indoors than I do to wear outdoors during winter (I live in a place with mild winters)

Suz, you make so many interesting points. Upgraded versions of my favorite items sounds like a very good option. I have a confession to make. I tend to invest less in my fall summer clothes than in my fall/winter/spring ones, since most high summer clothes are not as appealing to me as fall/winter/spring ones. I love to buy casual and dressy summer clothes, but regarding work summer clothes, I buy them because I have to, but shopping for them is not as fun. As a result, I don't love them as much as my non work summer clothes, or my non high summer work clothes. I will try to invest in better summer clothes for work, and consider the happiness they could provide, and not only their functionality. I will start checking designer end of season sales, even if I can buy only one designer piece per year.

I have just checked Nickel and Suede jewelry quickly, and I already see a few pieces with potential. I will go back later and look more thoroughly.
About the five high summer months, there are some days worse tan others, but temperature rarely goes below 35 Celsius during those months. What we do have during those months is hurricane season. We rarely get hurricanes and/or even tropical storms, but often times, we get a day or two with heavy rain followed by two to three weeks with no rain at all, not even a single cloud in the sky. Those days, dress code for work is even more casual, so I can try to dress differently. Also, the last two weeks of July, almost the whole office building is empty for summer holidays. I usually work those days and instead take my two-week vacation period in September or October. Since there is almost no one at the office, I know there will be no meetings and no events to attend, so I can use those two weeks to experiment a bit more with my outfits.

Thanks for reminding me that building a wardrobe is a marathon. I need to keep that in mind as I tend to be impatient sometimes. And you look fabulous in your wool culottes.

Suz, I’m going to answer your question about whether the heat truly lasts that long, because I’m a little bit north of Dianna, so she is likely to have slightly longer hot periods than we do.

Yes It truly is that hot that long.
In May, here, there might be a few days that are “only” 88-90, but most days are over 90. The mornings then are low 70s. That changes in June, and the temp rarely gets below 80 until September or October. Fall transition in Oct/Nov is about like spring, and just as long. Coastal Mexico can’t have shorter periods of heat than that.

I'm so glad you raised this topic. I love to see the way you are planning ahead! And I'm also glad Brooklyn chimed in because our OZ and Kiwi members are the very best for dressing in the heat!! They get it.

I'm jumping in more with commiseration than advice. I have the exact opposite weather to yours and the opposite issues -- I have to find a way to dress for a five month winter that feels fashionable and fun.

In the face of extremes combined with specific practical demands (like those you deal with, dressing for work), I find that I do, inevitably, rely on one or two silhouettes. Like you, I get bored. And yes, this used to drive me nuts!! So I really understand your frustrations.

What's helped me:

Try to accept that for 4-12 weeks a year or even more (and more on that, below....) you may indeed be pretty much limited to a couple of silhouettes -- or even one! Yes, it gets dull...but accepting it and moving on makes it easier than fighting it nonstop. You can start to look for the best, most luxe, most "special" versions of your preferred items and really enjoy wearing those clothes.

Absolutely -- if a trend comes along that might work for you or might add a bit of variety (e.g. A lines or flutter sleeves or whatever) jump on it. Ignore all preachy remarks from people who say that you "shouldn't" do so.

(Example: Last year, I finally found a pair of wool culottes that work for me. For me this is a great find because I can put long underwear on, tall boots, a bunch of layers on top, a jacket, and a coat...and get away from the ubiquitous skinnies-tucked-into tall boots look that basically defines winter where I live. Some people thought my purchase of these culottes was a bit silly since I really only wear them about 5 or 6 times a year. But you know what? I don't care. They suit me, they're a practical option to the "uniform" and they make me happy. Enough said.)

Just don't overbuy until you figure out if it really gives you joy and works for you practically, and if it doesn't, try your best to accept that and move on. Resume your attempts to inject variety in your tried and true silhouettes via colour, new pattern, and really interesting footwear and accessories.

Speaking of which...in hot temps, nothing adds more to an outfit than fantastic footwear, simple but lightweight and not "sticky" costume jewellery, and tops with interest of their own. For jewellery, I've really enjoyed the Nickel and Suede stuff in the hot hot summer months.

Also, continue to do what you're already doing -- buy more for your dominant season. You can have more clothes, more options in this season. Five months is a long time. Check out the end of summer designer sales, if fine clothes are your thing. Ignore NAS except for specific items like undies, workout wear, some footwear, and specific tops (they usually do in fact have some "summery" things...you just have to pick and choose.)

Also, recalculate. Is it truly five months of high summer? Or are there breaks in that high heat? Do you have ultra hot spells combined with not-quite-as-hot or not-quite-as-humid spells? Wherever you find temperature or humidity variation, milk it. Where I live, this year, we're in a brutal and long-lasting cold snap. There is no way I can go out without my puffer coat right now. But the first day that the temperature moves to around 0 (as opposed to -20C) I am going to be wearing a wool coat and a skirt with tights. And in my short summer months, I wear so many different silhouettes! I get lots of my own fashion joy at that time. You can work on the same principle. Make sure you fully make use of your short temperate and cool seasons.

And remember it's a marathon. It takes a few seasons to build up a closet that really accepts your dominant climate.

Hi Dianna. It's not generally as hot at that here (except for today, where we are expecting 45, but that's unusual). But we do regularly have days in the mid to high 30s. And lots of humidity.

I tend to wear pencil skirts and A line skirts. The skirts are cotton, lined in viscose, so breathable. I do find that they get a bit sticky around the waist when outdoors, especially if I am wearing a tucked or semi tucked top. I prefer to wear a loose top that does not require tucking. I generally prefer a cotton knit or a breathable woven (preferably silk, but even silk can get sticky at those temperatures). I have found it difficult to find dressy woven tops that are short enough that they don't require tucking (when worn with a skirt). So last year I had a few of my tops shortened from lower hip to upper hip length so that they are wearable this way.

I also like to wear a sleeveless fluid knee length dress (see find). I would love to have this in more colours. I know you said you don't like to wear sleeveless, but I find wearing a lightweight scarf over my shoulders when outdoors is effective for sun protection and then you can wear the scarf as a third piece when indoors. (At my work there is no problem wearing sleeveless tops.)

A sleeveless vest might be another way of adding some interest to your outfit without adding too much warmth.

And jewellery of course!

And I support what Zaeobi said about getting changed at work. I do this on really hot days.

Following because I'm still struggling to adjust from living in the cold UK to now being in Hong Kong, where it's hot & humid (90%+ humidity most of the year & it's currently 20 degrees Celsius even in winter)! I commute by foot (MTR/ train and then a 10-15 walk, by which point I'm sweating by the time I get to the office). This might be TMI but I actually bring two sets of clothes to change into (including underwear) once I get to the office bathroom in the morning. I also dress in layers for the office AC, along with darker colours & prints to hide the sweat (I told you it might be TMI, lol)!

Fun post! Summer work outfits are hard.

I like some styles of what I call safari jackets and utility jackets. Some are not as casual as others and I wear them as toppers over bigger sleeves because usually they are not as tight through the sleeve and armholes as a blazer. Also I like them BECAUSE they are sportier, less formal because I sometimes want to juxtapose that with a very classic top & bottom so as not to look almost corporate. These jackets are often in cotton or linen types if fabrics , good for summer. Bomber jackets are not my friend but look great on others and again, are a way to have a looser topper.
I also look for good but cool knitwear such as some of the linen knits that have become popular- I like sleeves and these go from hot to cool better than synthetics, and drape better than cotton. Some rayon knits or wovens are good for that, too.
