Hi Kirti,
I also don't really love double-breasted trenches on me. As Angie and others have pointed out, trenches don't have to be the classic Burberry style. They can be shorter which would be utterly adorable on you. They can have a slightly swingy silhouette which I like. There are just so many styles to experiment with that you shouldn't feel you HAVE to go with the "classic" trench style. I myself want to find a colorful topper I won't get tired of but haven't found one yet which is why I always wear my good old cheap black carcoat length topper. As you find potential coats please post as I am looking also. I am not petite like you but I have the same concern about the double-breasted style.

Sarah: I'll keep a lookout for them :)

Claire: Thanks! I like that idea (and I'm wondering why it didn't strike me!)

Shevia, Sara: Thank you!

I'm not much of a jacket person so can't contribute much to this conversation (it's warm where I live and I tend to just layer up instead of wearing a jacket). But I just wanted to say I really like outfits #4 and #6. The leather jacket in #6 fits you perfectly.

While you're looking around, you could try scrunching the sleeves of the trench you already have, Parisian Chic style.

so... this might be more gearish that you are interested in but i adore the function of the down "sweaters" (which are not so puffy as a down puffer coat) that several brands have out, with pategonia being my favorite. again gearish looking but perfect for low humidity transitional weather.

Thanks Angie! I will look out for a shorter, non double breasted coat - maybe in a springy colour? You're right about the weather - I do need a spring coat!

Manidipa: The coat is from a cheapie local brand, so I doubt if the alteration is worth it. I do agree that I need a fun colour or print in a longer jacket/coat to add to my wardrobe! thanks

So... how about a shorter trench, in a bright colour or print? My logic goes like this, so you can see if you agree:

You currently have a long (can the sleeves be altered?) coat, and three hip-high jackets; so something in between seems a good idea for variety --- maybe a just-covering-the-bottom or mid-thigh length?

Your current crop of toppers are all neutrals or near-neutrals. Time to up the ante a bit with something fun or arresting?

Trenches don't need to be double breasted or knee-length. They can be short and cheeky, un-belted and even empire cut.

Your trench is overly long in the sleeve which will contribute to feeling like it's wearing you.

A short Spring coat is a biggie for me in Seattle (same weather as France). I also have LOTS of jackets.

There is a whole world of toppers to explore, Kirti.

My list for spring shopping includes one cream coloured t shirt, one striped t shirt and a coloured trench coat. (Minimalist much?!)

But I already own a trench and now that I look back at photos of it, I feel like the double breasted style is overwhelming me (and that the sleeves may be a little too broad for me). See Pics 1&2.

This makes me wonder if I should get another trench, since they are mostly double breasted and that may not be a good style in general for someone with a larger bust size.

But if not a trench, then what should I get? What would be a good spring-autumn jacket for me? I already have a denim jacket (see pic 3) and a basic black blazer (see pic 4), along with a brown cotton jacket (see pic 5).

Do I even need another jacket? I don't want something overly trendy, but I'm thinking maybe a coloured blazer or even a printed one?

ETA: I also have a very dark brown leather jacket (pic 6).
