I just wanted to chime in and say that I really like the slightly longer length in the last photo you posted in a subsequent photo on this thread - beautiful on you!

It may not be that you want to go shorter after all, but rather - a bit longer!

In the meantime, I don't think you need to wait on glasses, because I'm guessing that glasses need to work with your face, and that you wouldn't want to buy new glasses based on a hairstyle that could be transient anyway.

Agree with Angie in that you might want some new specs that aren't quite as rectangular, and I also agree with a previous poster that the colour of the glasses with the longer hair cut in the final photo in your most recent pictures posted looks really good on you.

You have beautiful hair!!! It's just a matter of finding the right cut. You already have the colour just right.

Texstyle, thanks for the information on the oils - I'll have to look into them because humidity really does a number on my hair.

I'll talk to my stylist about working with layers and waves - probably starting with the current length or growing out some then going shorter later if I decide - my appointment is next month.

Eye doctor appointment is next week so hopefully I'll be posting some glasses pics soon.

But now that I think of it - should I wait on new frames until after the hair is resolved?

I popped back in and saw the additional photos and I have to agree that the slight wave is pretty and I'd probably try to work with that at least somewhat in my new style if possible. I don't know if you had to work at getting the waves to "behave" in these pics (I know I do) so I realize that might be a consideration. I never flat iron but I DO use a giant curling iron that makes my small almost curly waves into large ones and I "semi" straighten parts of my hair with it.

You asked about the almond oil. I just buy a regular Almond oil from a natural foods vendor like Whole Foods or online. I also use a very light oil from Giovanni sometimes that smells really good. I use their shampoo/conditioner too. Aveda makes a similar very light oil called "Brilliant" (or at least that's what it used to be called). In both cases, less is more. A *very* small a amount rubbed in the hands and smoothed in a flattening manner downward with the hair shaft. I use even less in front on my bangs but I do just barely have some oil left on my hands when I smooth it in front. Doing this seems to really help me beat humidity. I still brush it and even curl or straighten it more after the oil so it's not really a "styling" product but a "taming" product.

The hair color and glasses color in the last pic in the series are very flattering on you. If you go for some layers, you will be able to play around with the wave and see if you can make it work for you.

Thanks, Deborah. You are so kind.

The computer I have to use for photos won't let me edit posts, so I've added some pictures here. Cinnamonfern wondered about seeing non flat ironed har. Here it is in all of its uncontrollable glory.

First and last pic have been styled but not flat ironed. The three in the middle are varying degrees of awfulness while on vacation.

It sounds like your hair is very much like my mother's. She used to keep a short cut because it was so thick, wavy, and totally unmanageable for her. But now that she has grown it out (she has it blown out twice a week) it looks fantastic on her, and much more suited to her than the short, practical cut which (to be honest) aged her. I think, looking at your photos, you might actually explore a slightly longer length (perhaps to the collarbone) where the ends will not curve in and sort of pouf out the hairstyle? I love the lighter colour on you as well. Layers are a good idea, just make sure they are longer layers, because my mother has had serious grief if the layers aren't long enough to pull back - they frizz out. Good luck! It is a leap to make a hairstyle change but it can be so rewarding and refreshing. =)

Also want to say great to see you!
I forgot to comment about your hair. You've received great advice! I wholeheartedly agree with thinnning out. Adding layers but growing the length, and growing out the finge to a side swept look. That means longer fringe, but still a fringe.

Between work, and workouts, I haven't had time to search. The stores here are only open during work hours. I may have to take half a day off work just to spend some time looking.

I did play around with a photocopy of my face and a marker to get ideas for flattering frame shapes, so,I think I can ID more easily in store. Silly,I know!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I really appreciate your taking the time to read my ramblings and post.

Sounds like a little more length with some layers and tapering is the way to start out. The close up with the plastic frames is from last summer and the color was lighter than it is now. I do have a few highlights in the body length pic but they don't show up.

The waves aren't really anything I can use for styling because they aren't all over but rather look like I slept with wet hair. The wavy/bushy factor is with air drying. After blow drying it can still have some waves but is "poufy" instead of bushy.

@Angie, Thanks! I didn't say originally but I have read your blog posts about selecting frames. I'll post some pics once the search gets underway!
@Liz, thanks for the Heidi picture, I quite like that!
@Janet, thanks - your hair always looks so nice in your pictures .
@texstyle, thanks! I *don't* use much product except an occasional spritz of conditioner, heat protectant or smoother. Guess I don't like the sensation of it being weighed down because it feels dirty. The almond oil sounds interesting! Do you make your own or buy it? I definitely ,see what you are saying about my hair basically pointing at my neck - it's kind of like a big neon arrow : )
@Suz, you are too kind!
@KikiG, oh yes, I color! Not ready quite for gray yet : ) We've done highlights but no lowlights yet.
@cinnamonfern, I'll post a picture tomorrow with blow dry only and no flat iron.
@donnat, thanks!
@ClaraT, we've tried taking the back up shorter but it didn't work. And, yes, the glasses are a green tortoise shell.
@dlb1960, I agree with you about it being only hair, and mine does grow fairly fast. I need to actually follow through on the "only hair", though I hesitate to go for the big chop because of my husband.
@LynD, I'll be sure to post some follow up pics.
@Kellygirl, yes, I know just what you mean about blending the bangs and think you're on to something. Similar to the picture Liz posted.
@Caro, thanks!
@Runcarla, have you had any luck with your glasses search? I did see your thread about looking. You know, I do pull my hair up on occasion with a banana clip, but usually only when very desperate to get it off my neck. I do see what you mean about the shorter cut opening up the face.

Couldn't believe that you have wavy/ bushy hair issues when looking at your pics, but when you describe your routine, I understand a little better. I agree with those who post about more layers with face framing ones like in the Heidi picture. If you are ok with your current regime including flat ironing, then let your hair grow to shoulder length to loose the curve that is pointing at the neck, and get the very front graduated up to your cheeks, BUT NO SHORTER.

FWIW, though I really understand your problem with #2 styling, there is something really appealing about the way it opens up your face. Do you ever style your hair up? Like a loose French twist?

Due to a lifestyle with lots of sports and fitness and thus showers every day or more, I have surrendered to wash and wear ( and crazy curl). Still, when the bulk (I think stylists call it the line) of the cut hits a certain area it brings attention to that area. Bulk at eye to cheek works for me. Bulk at neck...well the less said. (I am 52 and though the body is holding out, the chin/neck area--not so much.)

I'm going to follow your thread, because I am also into the search for new glasses.

You have gorgeous, hair and I love the coppery color. Very pretty. I think the length is good but would opt for incorporating some layers to frame your face and remove some of the bulk from the bottom. I would talk to your stylish about blending the bangs so it doesn't look like a bob with bangs (does that make sense?) I'm excited to see you find some new glasses. I always love those posts where we get to help choose frames. I learn so much from those. Good luck!

Great advice here!
I am another thick/wavy haired Fabber, and I agree about layering being the way to go! Must stipulate 'long layers' for our hair type, as too short layers will shrink when dry cause you grief.
Good luck, and I look forward to some 'after' pics.

My hair is similar to yours and I struggle with the humidity and the wave. I go through periods of going with some length and wave and then I get it chopped off which I find liberating. Then after a while back I go to longish and wavy. I'm a believer in 'its only hair' in the sense that you can grow it back. I'm also one for not having the same hairstyle for long periods of time. My husband also likes my hair long BUT me being happy with my style and look outweighs my husbands preference. It's my hair after all.
I'm on team chop it off and go with a version of the pixie. Long and layered is lovely but maybe not the change you are looking for. New glasses. New hair. I'd go for it!!!!! After all its only hair and it will be back!

Liz, I think it depends on one's hair. I have some natural wave and I always had to have layers to release the wave. Otherwise, the weight of the hair pulled it down and out. So with (the right) layers I could air dry for a naturally wavy look, and blow dry / flat iron for straight.

Great advice on this thread, pil! I just wanted to caution that if you do intend to wear your hair wavy, you will not want to get it thinned. Thinning is murder on waves. Otherwise, thin away!

I'll also cast my vote for layering/thinning. Some light bits (highlights) near your face might be nice for summer. I think a layered bob (with the appropriate control products) would look nice either wavy or sleek.

Re: frames. Are your current ones tortoise shell? I think that color/pattern would go well with your coloring with a bias towards a lighter color and lighter frame.

So nice to see you! You DO have gorgeous thick hair :)

May I suggest specs that are less rectangular, follow your brow lines, and LIFT the face? Something more playful and feminine. I'd be happy to help you look for the perfect pair!! xo

I agree, it IS nice to see you. I think you have beautiful thick hair. Layering
Is exactly what will tame that mane, and little oil wouldn't hurt either.

I'm curious about what your hair looks like if you don't flat iron it. Can we see a picture with the natural wave? I'm wondering about a cut that works with the wave instead of needing ironing.

Old gal, here also! I think your length isn't the problem, it is the bulk, and where it is. I have a bunch of bushy hair, myself, and my hair is both layered and thined at the salon, and then I add spray oil, and flat iron it. I color my hair, do you? In addition to thinning and layering, have you considered some tonal, low maintenance highlights, to catch light and to reduce what can be the harshness of a hard, flat, dark line against one's face.

Pil, when you smile, all imaginary issues about your face being "dragged down" immediately disappear. You have a smile that lights up your eyes -- the best kind.

You have gorgeous thick hair, too. I am completely inexpert in the niceties of longer lengths, but I will say that my own hair is a similar texture, and when I wore it that length I always had layers and it was always thinned out. In fact, the thinning shears have always been my hairstylists' secret weapon (whether my hair is long or short) because otherwise, my hair puffs out like nobody's business.

I quite like your glasses (the plastic frames?) and do not think they look mannish. But I also support a change in frames. It is always great to update!

Hey pil - good to "see" you! :-) I agree with Liz and Janet that layering, even some thinning might be in order. Also, do you use any light oils or really good conditioner to help weigh it down? I use almond oil very sparingly by rubbing a 1/2 pea size drop or so in my hands and then smoothing it through the thicker longer parts of my hair to add some weight.

At some point I remember seeing a tip that you should try to end some layers near your face at the point of your best feature to help draw attention to that feature. Right now most of your hair is ending right at the point you are saying you don't like to emphasize. It is literally pointing to your neck and chin. So, getting some layers that fall maybe more in line with your mouth, sort of like the photo with Heidi above, but just a tad shorter there, would give you what you want. I'd consider adding more dramatic highlights or lowlights over your color as well to help bring attention to your eyes and mouth.

These are ideas for a non-dramatic change - for more dramatic changes I'd have to leave it to the pro's for advice.

I agree with Liz about the layering. I think you and I probably have very similar hair, and my stylist layers the heck out of mine. Mine also gets weird wavy/puffy areas when it grows out a bit.
