I'm a big fan of JCrew cashmere which is a tad pricey but is thick enough to not pill quickly. Or wool works well for warmth and layering.

I agree about merino wool being very durable and warm. Re. pilling: do you have a de-piller? Getting rid of the pills on your current sweaters might extend their life a bit.

I just saw these recommended in Lucky mag: Remington FuzzAway for $6 (a battery-operated mini-shaver) for chunky knits, and the D-Fuzz-It for $3 (more like a comb) for fine-gauge knits.

IK: I was already tempted, but based on your recommendation I went ahead and ordered these sweaters from Last Call (Neiman Marcus):

In my experience chunkier wool sweaters aren't always warmer than thinner knits (e.g. cashmere, merino wool etc.). I often associate them with being too itchy, but that may be a generalization, of course.

I love thinner, good quality sweaters paired with a cami for colder weather. Or maybe you could add a button-down shirt or a silk blouse (quite warm too) underneath a sweater or cardigan?

How about these:

I like 100% merino wool sweaters. I find they are very warm without being too bulky and can wear like iron. I layer them over button-ups and under jackets.

In the past I've bought several from J. Crew. They always have a variety of colors and shapes. Unfortunately, the ones I've bought in the last year or two haven't help up quite as well as my older ones, so I can't give you any specific recommendations.

I agree with Joy that the warmest sweater (too warm at times) was an Alpaca one I had years ago. It was thin, but super heavy in weight. Not inexpensive, but I purchased on a whim at a designer showcase.

Angie: no, not necessarily a sweater jacket. Just not a thin knit top like this: http://compare.ebay.com/like/1.....8;_lwgsi=y

And also something beyond v-neck pullovers and cardigans, too.

I know cashmere is better, but I've had horrible experiences with cashmere pilling, so I wanted recommendations on sweaters that hold their shape and don't pill after a single wearing...

thanks everyone who's responded so far!

cardigans for me, in wool or cashmere. i like oversized and drapey. i also love wool turtlenecks. chunky and boxy. the top row has 3 sweaters for examples.

http://www.shopbop.com/vince/b.....s_kwcid=TC|8267|vince%20sweater||S|p|8041385428

i think warmth is a function of the material, the yarn gauge and the weave tightness.

I have always liked thicker, chunky knit sweaters, even though they only recently came back 'in'. They were never out for me lol. Perhaps because they help balance my lower half? With a long sleeved tee underneath, I find them perfectly cozy warm! And maybe you should look into a sweatercoat as well? As you know, just try and avoid the 100% acrylic ones! Wool is good. Cashmere is better.

I received the gift of a cable knit alpaca cardigan last year and it's soooo warm. Laurin makes a good point about cardigans rather than pull-ons to control the heat. I think mine was from The Peruvian Connection.
Cashmere is a great fabric that is warm but light weight and less likely to feel too warm. I also liked Nordstrom's Halogen long merino wool cardigans last year as a warm light weight layer. This one isn't as long but that might be better for you in the lab. It comes in many colors:

The warmest sweater I've ever had was hand-knit Icelandic wool, but they make a strong style statement. Blends with mohair are also very cozy.

Boiled wool is toasty warm, and can be tailored into more of a jacket-like top without a jacket's restriction of arm movement.

I don't recommend pullovers with really warm sweaters -- cardigans with full button or zipper openings are essential for controlling the heat level.

Winter came early to the NE so I've been thinking about my winter clothing collection, which is not as fab as I'd like it to be. Most of the sweaters I have are pilling or have bagged out, and I'd like to invest in getting some warm yet stylish sweaters of decent quality this season. By "warm" I mean the kind of sweater you wear as a outer layer over something else, not a stand alone knit top--I have plenty of those and they're not warm enough. I know jackets can also provide warmth, and I have quite a few of those, but sometimes in the winter I just want a sweater and sometimes I find myself taking off jackets because I feel like I don't have full arm mobility with them (I work with my hands in lab and am often stretching and reaching for things). Any recommendations? I've been scouring various websites but nothing's caught my eye yet.

I'd prefer them to be less than $150, ideally less than $100.
