Thanks, all! My preference would definitely be for tall boots with a more refined silhouette. I have the Ugg Cortonas, my taupe Frye pull-ons, and my cowboy boots for a more rugged effect, so I would be thinking something that would lend itself well to skirts/dresses as well as with jeans. Anna, you definitely are thinking along the same lines I have been.

I love the idea of cognac with grey! I have plenty of grey to make that happen.

Sterling, that color exercise is a nice one. It's got me thinking of putting together a little palette from my own wardrobe to see what colors are represented and how much. I have a good idea, but sometimes when you see things laid out for you, there can be surprises. Thanks for the link!

I'm going to try the tall cognac boots I posted, but I'm going to be very picky about this, so I'm in no rush to commit. If anyone sees any good contenders in a sleek, tall cognac boot with a low heel that would fit with my style (and is not too slim in the leg, I think my calves are now 15 or 15.5"), please feel free to share!

Annagybe, I've been seeing that too! Cognac and grey...on the guys. It did look fab!

The colour is a natural for me, since it bookends my hair. Dark haired folks might need to pick up the colour with accessories - belt, bag - the way I need to have black in my outfit if I'm going to wear black footwear.

I don't wear any browns as much since I let my hair go grey but when I do wear my cognac boots it's usually with blues, greens & greys.

I just saw a guy on the bus in grey suit, light purple pinstriped shirt & cognac oxfords. He looked really good. Or maybe I was blinded by the fact I see so few guys in suits.
Anyways are you looking to wear them with skinnier, dresses, skirts?
I think the ones Suz showed are too casual and kinda on the same continuum as working cowboy boots. Dress cowboy boots are an entirely different beast.
I think you need a refined style so it looks intentional, not like you just threw on whatever was by the door.

All three are beautiful boots, and cognac is a gorgeous color. I always think of wearing it with other warm tones so I don't know how well it would go with your mostly cool colored wardrobe. I think the best idea is to try a pair with a few outfits first.

Love the boots Janet. The tall ones seem great. Definitely worth trying....as are the two-tone ones in #3. Now those look very interesting!

Suz, the riding boots are gorgeous! Definitely more coffee than cognac, but I still LOVE them!

Donna, your cognac ankle boots look real versatile! Hope you get alot of wear out of them this F/W.

I'm just warning that I can't seem to get myself together with cognac - maybe it will click with my new colors but between hair and finding what "goes" I have struggled and finally sold a pair of Fryes. Can you come up with some outfits using your current boots just for a color test of how you'd really like this? Not saying it won't work, just that I personally found it challenging. But I am easily stymied!

I will be watching with interest, Janet. I favor a similar color palette and in some ways, cognac is a stand in for orange, which I can't do. I saw its possibilities though, when cognac was featured with rich blues (navy, ink), various tones of gray, and black in shop windows in Italy, fall 2013. I find the right tone of it elegant and happiness inducing, I avoid the more yellow toned cognacs. Angie has also featured it with burgundy, a very fresh combo.

Thanks for posting.

I realized, duh!, that I do have a pair of cowboy boots that fall into that tan-cognac color range, but they serve a completely different purpose. I'm thinking of a sleeker, more versatile style that can more easily be dressed "up" (dressy casual) or down. The cowboy boots are at least a decade old and are pleasantly beat up. I've actually considered leaving them at the ranch, but I'm afraid I'll miss having them at home, so I cart them back and forth. So, the fact that I've found them so useful (and have sometimes wished for another comfortable boot option in that color range) bodes well, I think.

Last year cognac seemed to start making a reappearance in retail, and I tried on one or two pairs of cognac boots when I saw them around, but they didn't work for me for various reasons (cheap leather, fit). But I'm still enamoured with the rich color and the possibilities for cognac boots.

I've been looking (just online, not available anywhere near me) at the ones pictured in my first Find below, and since I am getting rid of a bunch of my old, tired (or too high-heeled) tall boots, I've been wondering what, other than black, might be most useful for me.

Considering that my wardrobe is heavy on cool colors -- blues, teals, greens, grays, burgundys -- I'm wondering what your thoughts are on incorporating a pair of tall cognac boots into my style. I think the contrast could actually be a nice departure from how heavily I rely on black and grey. I have a cognac handbag I like, but I don't use it a lot because I feel like something else in my outfit should pick up that color.

It might just be that I'd need to try them on with potential outfits to see how it feels/looks. But I welcome any thoughts about this.
