Oh how I love that second dress on you! I can't assess the fit as photo #2 is blurry and you are holding out the sides in #4. A good tailor will be able to alter the top if it needs it. Whether you keep it in blue or black, it will be a timeless addition to your wardrobe.

Okay, ordering smaller size!

Dianthus, I did size up in the Papell, so I'm sized out there. I'm also long-waisted so I like about where the Tadashi sits, I don't like fitted waists to be too high or the skirts kinda stick out and are too full in the wrong place, but if the smaller size just a touch higher that would still be okay.

Staysfit, thanks for the vote of confidence! I so appreciate your comments. You are absolutely right that Angie sets the perfect tone for having fun with fashion and not worrying about the little things, and helps us keep everything in perspective. I like to kid around a little on the forum, in contrast to my more serious ventures (: , so maybe I use my wry tone too lightly.
Sveta, I will try not to be boring! I had targeted the navy because the black and nude lace was reading really "warm" and the navy-nude seemed a cooler palette. We'll see.

All the comments have encouraged me in the direction of, if the fit can be worked out, then this would be good to have on hand ( and it's true that often the occasions will be more likely if I'm feeling equipped!). In kind of reviewing wardrobe "holes and mountains" I've targeted a couple of recent items to return, and "wants" that aren't real needs, because I think I accumulate items that are easier to find and duplicate, and then don't have something for specific occasions. I do like the fun-factor associated with dressing for the occasion if I can. I don't actually have to do girl-math, but it only takes a few unnecessary, wear-splitting items to = one dressy dress, and the former don't really change the game at all.

Wow, I really love the shape of dress 2. It is absolutely stunning but I see how it is large in the torso, especially when you are holding out the sides :-). I have no idea how hard it is to take in lace, but the tailors near me work miracles. If you have a good tailor, it may be worth asking? Also, I agree with everyone who suggests ordering the smaller size to try that as well. It looks like you have a lot of room in the torso, so it might work.

My next words are meant with love and kindness. Angie shows us pictures for inspiration, not to make us feel competitive, ashamed or badly about ourselves. In fact, I love how she is so sensitively aware of how different we all are, and pays attention to this in her blog, and on the forum. I am certain that you know this, or you wouldn't have been brave enough to post a picture of yourself in the same dress as Angie. You should wear that and any dress with the confidence that your own beauty will shine through.

Another vote for dress No 2.
It looks great on you.
I would try a size down before altering and I would stick with black and not even try navy.
I think a black dress is more versatile. It's easier to change shoes, bags etc for future occasions.

Tadashi gets my vote. I would follow Suz's advice and try a navy is size down to see how it fits.
This is an interesting statement:
"I will have more access to black shoes and black toppers, and so that may look more intentional than wearing the same, with navy, and hoping I look like sophisticated neutral-mixer."
Personally for me most of the times when somebody wears all black it does not look as much intentional as just "afraid to try something else because I don't know how to mix colors". I think navy and black does look sophisticated and stylish together and this is what I would go with - but I love navy and ink.

I think both dresses are lovely. Is the waist on the tadashi sitting at your natural waist or an inch or so lower? I have that issue with the tadashi dresses I own - they are a touch big in the upper torso and a touch long to the waist. If you are ordering another tadashi, could you try the next size up in the Papell as well and see which of the dresses works the best?

I think both dresses will have staying power so would be worth the alteration to get the perfect fit. It is rare to find a dress that fits ideally everywhere off the shelf.

What Kelly said by a billion percent. Before you begin the alteration process, did you try a size down?

Personally, I MUCH prefer dress #2, and that's not because I have it too. It's much more flattering on your body type, and more interesting to boot. I cannot see the dress date or be overly memorable. That thought never entered my mind, actually. I bought that dress. My actions speak louder than my words.

Thanks, Kellygirl!

Ummlila, I do wish it didn't need alteration. I had assumed that sizing down would make it too snug elsewhere. The riding up in # 1 is , what goes up does not come down!
Gardenchick , thanks for your take on dresses. Also I'm trying to learn that if I don't over invest in too many of one type of outfit ( say more work items than I really need) , it wouldn't be a big stretch to have a few items on hand for special occasions with a fairly high CPW. I go black&white forth on that approach vs the make- do approach.

Both are very flattering. From the photos, I can't see the thing you're complaining about regarding the Papell, but I believe you if you say it isn't comfortable b/c it's riding up.

I have one LBD that I have had for many years...for a number of years it didn't fit me and was at the back of my closet, then I lost weight and it fit again. I actually wore it three times this year--to a wedding, a school benefit, and DH's work party. There were more occasions than I expected! I guess I'm saying that if the TS feels comfortable and flattering on you, I'd suggest keeping it.

After struggling to find something last-minute to wear to a dressy event this fall, I ordered both the Papell lace dress and the Tadashi Shoji awhile back and am just getting around to pics. I ordered the TS in the navy but they sent the black labelled as navy! So I have that to think about, too.

#1 is the Papell and I'll say up front it has to go back because the skirt portion rides up and stays up. Meaning, of course, that it's a bit too fitted and the fabric a bit clingy through the hip. I'm bummed, because even though it's a little shorter than I'd hoped, it otherwise fits well for a sheath, for me and to some extent might be more versatile than #2 below, though of course not a work dress. I'd hoped the riding up was minor, and it's not too bad from sit to stand, but if I raise up my arms, whoops, no skirt.

#2 is the TS. I quake to show it after your modeling of it, Angie! I think it looks very dressy and that 's part of the problem--will it sit in my closet and come out once a year, will it be too memorable to repeat, and for how many years could that work? It may be for my imaginary lifestyle, which includes the occasional cocktail/formal event, and of course weddings and such are unpredictable times of year and not always so dressy, so it's hard for me to string together a series of dress events in any one year.
The second issue is, umm, roomy darts again. It does not fit as it does on Angie! It isn't as obvious as in some dresses because of the lace pattern and also the softness of the fabric, but I am guessing it would need to be taken in at side seams a bit, if that were possible. (The belt is not fitted enough but could be fixed or other belt sub'd).

The 3rd thing is, I wanted to try the navy as it looked more pinky+ navy but here I am in black. I could order ( if still available) to see if somehow it "read" differently--perhaps less wintry? but of course the fit and dressy issues will be the same. OTOH, I will have more access to black shoes and black toppers, and so that may look more intentional than wearing the same, with navy, and hoping I look like sophistocated neutral-mixer.

Anyway, comments are appreciated, re the dress itself, fit and so on, vs. how realistic to be.
