Thanks, Angie! Like Anya says and Meredith explains, the recent 'laxness' in defining the term had me confused. It makes sense now to see it first as fabrication, and then mimicry of the classic shape in a new fabrication. The trench as functional and the trench as fashion, then?

Good question....I don't know what defines a trench either but there is a pretty good history of them at this link and it appears the term is used "loosely" nowadays.

It's the fabrication more than anything - crisp and stiff usually. Not wool. Structured. Weather resistant half the time. Coat -like, and not a jacket. Burberry-esque.

Does that help?

I thought the gabardine material , or the weatherproof qualities, but I still wait the answers ( as I found out there are silk trenches out there) . in my view a trench is a spring coat cut more like a coat than a jacket. ( at least mid-tight-is).

Bumping this.

Not really sure what the answer is. I'd be interested to know, too.

Angie, you said and several of us agreed when Kirti was hunting one down that a trench coat need NOT have a belt, could be empire-waisted instead, need not be double-breasted etc. I've also seen trenches without the tabbed sleeves or epaulettes...

So what exactly defines a trench coat as a trench and not another kind of coat?
