Gee thanks, now I just put a pair of those Genetics in a shopping cart. They're half price though which makes them slightly justifiable on the current Cdn dollar . I want them! But I also want them to be darker for fall . Anyways , back to you , Janet. I totally see you in a moto jean, or a waxed finish one . Feed into your inherent rocker chick side - it's you.

UmmLila, I like those! I wonder how they would work for the, um, muscular thighs. Good sale too, I might be tempted to try. As usual, I'm right between sizes according to the chart, not sure if I'd need a 30 or 31.

I wonder too if those might be harder to style for fall/winter since they are a straighter cut.

I have been happy with these jeans, bought earlier in the summer, but not worn much yet because it's been warm. I don't find the rise to be super-high, just a little on the high side.

Anna, I like the silhouette of those Rachel Comey denim cullottes -- I would like to try something like that, but at a lower price point. I may pop into Anthro to check out those Pilcro ones too, although patch pockets don't seem to be my best look. *sometimes* they can work on me, but it's really tricky. I'm intrigued by some of these looser silhouettes, but I'm afraid of looking really wide. I wore some of those kind of styles years ago, but I was thinner then. Clearly I'll need to go shopping on a day when I'm feeling adventurous and try some things on. :-)

Thanks for the ideas!

I am considering some kick flares as we move into spring here. My denim capsule is pretty limited but I struggle too to get pairs I love.

I could see you in culottes too, a sleek pair. Metallic jeans could be super fun for evening too, I would like something fun to wear to casual girls nights.

I am not sure about jacquard, maybe it is just me though....it reminds me a little too much of home furnishings.

Thanks for asking this question, Janet! I'm watching with interest as I'm feeling my jeans capsule is tired. I'm trying to reset my 80s clock and look for light wash jeans. I have one pair of light wash Gap 1969 but they are BFs and probably dated.

Oh, and a question: what is a kick flare and how is it different from a regular flare?

Oh, I've been wondering about this too, Janet. Recently I've mostly just bought replacements for dead old favorite styles. I did get the light grey girlfriend jeans in the spring, which I'm looking forward to wearing again in the fall/winter. I did "find" some raw-edge kick flares in my closet this summer, but those were like 10 yrs old (originally bootcuts, then chopped and rolled as clams, and now unrolled as kick flares) so they don't count!

I have the same issue as you with high rises. I want them to go away!

I actually have lots of mid calf and taller shaft ankle boots, since I've always liked them better than booties. Some are 3-4 yrs old though so I'll be looking for replacements.

I'm thinking maybe burgundy or olive jeans for me. Maybe even burgundy bootcuts?

Thanks, all, and especially Angie!

I am intrigued with cropped kick flares or culottes but I haven't seen good candidates in stores yet (not that I've been in stores much). I saw one pair but the waist was very high. I had a pair of black cropped kick flares years ago (around the time I got married, early 2000s) -- the had a slit at the side of the hem too, and I loved those pants. It might be that I'll have to search online.

I'll need to take a look at my tall boots too. I think I may be due for a new pair -- something sleek but cool. Too many of my pairs from years ago had 3+ inch heels, and I'm just not feeling those anymore.

YES, Janet. I know you want a mid rise for your short waisted self. Makes sense.

Here are my suggestions:

Cropped kick flare jeans to wear with ankle booties with taller shafts

Denim culottes to wear with tall boots

Burgundy jeans

Metallic jeans

Jacquard jeans

Also, the trend is towards booties with HIGHER shafts to wear with cropped jeans and pants. Make sure you have the high shaft booties covered.

And do you need to update your tall boots capsule? I'm asking because I know I do.

I've had a yen for a lighter-wash (or maybe even mid-wash) denim, and burgundy could be good. But I can't help you with availability of or finding the lower rise; I'm in love with the high rise and irritated by the mid- and low-rises remaining in my closet.

In the middle of catching up on work and took a quick break to look at the forum, and found myself surfing a shopping site or two, just to check out what is new for fall, since I've been out of the shopping loop since July.

It got me wondering, is there some new denim I should consider to freshen my collection for this coming fall and winter (and beyond)? It's too hot here in the summer to wear jeans much, so I'll be turning to my denim shelf more in a few weeks when things cool off. I have a couple old reliable pairs of skinnies/straights, a couple of boyfriends, and a couple of flare/bootcuts, all in mid- to dark blue washes. I also have skinnies in white and cream (rarely worn, especially since the white ones are a bit snug at the moment), grey, and black. Also a pair of grey/black houndstooth skinnies, a grey/black small jacquard print pair, and the Jolt dark green/blue/black plaid ones. I even have a neglected couple of pairs of waxed skinnies (very dark green and eggplant, the eggplant ones are a smidge snug now too).

With all of that, it seems I have no lack of things to wear on my bottom half this winter ;-), but should I be considering some new style that I'm missing? Something that would suit my style and body type? I was thinking of adding some burgundy jeans since they would play well with my wardrobe, but I'm always on the lookout for something new and different. Well, as different as I can get away with, at least, considering that my bottom half is the most difficult part of me to fit and flatter. Any ideas?

A complicating factor is the current trend toward high rises -- they are very difficult for me to wear. If I'm better off sticking with what I have now, I'll continue taking good care of all my mid- and low-rise jeans so they last out the trend!
