Thanks, Thistle! Thank you, Angie!
This is the smallest size, and it didn't shrink in the wash.
So it's meet with the tailor.

I like the dress too. Try a smaller size to compare bodice fits. I hope you don't loose too much length.

Nice dress, Unfrumped. As far as fit, don't forget the model probably has scads of clothes pins snugging the dress to her body. With the seaming that is visible in the stock picture you'd *think* it would be easy enough to have altered a bit.

I know exactly what you mean about the difficulty of finding dresses and skirts with longer lengths. Sigh.

Love the dress on you. I do think a bit of altering would make it ideal.

Love the dress and I would have it taken in a bit on top. It is so hard to find a dress with sleeves and that is long enough. Great find. If you wash it carefully, it probably won't shrink.

It does look a little roomy on top; I would have it altered. But the flare and length of the skirt is ridiculously flattering - it hits at just the right spot. I, too, have a sugar eye for dresses like these, though. I love being able to swoosh about with no worries about a hem that will come above the knee when I sit. Dresses like this are freeing and very feminine, and whether you decide to alter it or not, I'd keep it.

I can see why you like it, for sure. I get this sizing problem with dresses too, since I'm smaller on the top half. With a simple bodice shape you should be able to have it taken in a little - maybe adding darts if the aren't any, at both front and back.

Thanks for the comments!
It turns out this is the smallest size. I'm both intrigued and leery re: what might happen with washing, including a bit of drying. The worst thing would be if it shrank significantly in skirt length! But it's either wash now, or always dry clean. Hmmm.....

Congratulations on your find!

I think this looks really good on you, especially with the wider belt. I don't think the fit on top looks bad--maybe a tad big, but nothing glaring. Maybe washing it will help it shrink, though I tried to do that with a 60-40 cotton-nylon blend once and it didn't work. Hopefully yours has more cotton. Otherwise, you can see about getting it altered as you mentioned.

If you're concerned about it pilling, you can wash it in a garment bag in the washer. I think that a lot of pilling is the result of friction in the wash. If this is a HEWI, you'll want to take good care of it! :^)

I love the dress on you, and I like the size as is. It looks slightly fluid on top, but isn't that look in now? Also, if you wash it, it might shrink slightly and them be perfect.

Oh nice! This shape/style is very difficult to find right now unfortunately (have you looked at Boden? I think I saw one there but not sure if it's long enough), so I completely understand your excitement. I'm another vote for XS/getting the side seams taken in a bit.

It's a great dress, no wonder you like it! I suggest keeping it and have it taken in a little in the side seams. It shouldn't be that expensive or difficult. Otherwise, the fit and style is great for you.

I have on my midi-esque length sugar-eye goggles, on so I could really use expert YLF eyes.

I came across this dress in larger sizes so couldn’t tell whether it would fit, but was so enthused by its possibilities that I ordered it in size S from a store in another state.

It ticks many boxes such as sleeves, high neckline, princess seaming, and sort of fit and flare but poufy twee, beltable at my real waist, and the un-findable skirt length that is just over knee. I’d like to say it’s in a fine merino or woven wool, but it’s some kind of washable knit. Perhaps what we used to call “double knit”. (This one lacks a fabric content tag so I may have to swing by the store to re-check—I recall poly-cotton blend .) It was very inexpensive, but I think I can say It’s not the sale goggles, it’s the style goggles—I can’t seem to find anything remotely like this even at higher price points, as are always too short and short-waisted in my size.

This is kind of my aspirational dress style for an everyday fall-winter dress, of which I have none. I love it, with possible fit tweaks, so I’m totally biased toward making it work, but I will try to be objective!

I think the bodice looks too big especially when I shift a bit. It didn’t occur to me to ask if there was an XS and if so, to order more than one size. I can go ask about that, but I think I need the current amount of room in the low hip. I think a side-seam alteration could do it, since I’m not aiming for a snug fit, just not too much bunching. (Also if it’s part cotton I could try washing it first, and also try cami underlayer)

So—do you see what is drawing me, do you think it needs alteration and what would you do, do you think that would make it a winner (understanding it might pill or be short-lived in some way), or do you think I should return it and consider this type of dress still on the HEWI list.

Thank you for taking the time to look!

ETA added a stock photo of dress more "filled out"!
