There are some helpful suggestions here. One thing DD, an artist taught me is to try to squint my eyes and make everything blurry when I look at colors in relationship to each other. Apparently it allows one to better guage warm vs cool tones, and also to see if the intesity levels of the tones are compatible with one another.

Light will always affect the way our eye sees colour. The beige sweater in shadow will look different than in sunlight and different again under office flourescents. It seems less noticeable with more saturated colours, because they have such a strong presence, but it happens with them too. A green sweater will look different under flourescent lights than it does outdoors or in candlelight. Because there is so little chroma in light colours already, small shifts start to feel very noticeable. (Same thing happens with paint -- your perfect "greige" reads green in some lights and purple in others!)

Texture also play a role because of how it absorbs or reflects light.

It can be hard to guarantee any colour with flatter you equally in every light, but some strategies could include ensuring that you like it in the lighting where you will see it most. If a jacket is mostly worn outdoors, love it under natural light. Sweater mostly worn at work? Check it under those conditions.

I suppose you can also try to make sure you've got another colour supporting it that you know works. For example, I have an oatmeal/taupe cardigan that I don't think I would love on me by itself, but over black, I think it works.

Your cardigan looks lovely as shown. I hope you can find ways to feel fabulous in it every time you wear it!

The tan puffer is lovely! No real suggestions to add, other than nodding with Runcarla about taking things to the window / out of the door in shops. May be you could carry around a switch of fabric that you know is true for you and then compare it with the clothing that you are looking to buy?

No real advice, since time of day or cloud cover can affect the quality of light. I do often ask the SA’s if I can take a garment to a source of natural light since it can be very hard to assess colour in a store with poor or artificial light sources.

Thanks nemosmom! Those warm light colors are so hard. Even some of Kettlewell's "autumn" lights look greyish to me Consignment shops are good for comparing different colors- but the light colors often have stains. Scarves work, but I've been off them this year. I just don't like feeling them on my neck.

Blush is a tricky color for me, too. So are beiges and whites... In colder months I feel like I have a bit of flexibility, since I can throw on a scarf to get some separation between my face and a questionable color. Colors that are too cool look ghastly on me.

I have no advice, just letting you know you aren't alone!

Just decided that the color of a manilla folder could be my white! Other "white" possibility is the color of horschata through a brown glass. Inspiration in random places! Now whether they're actually available in clothes that would fit and work for my life is another story...

Should be able to take a pic of the sweater this weekend Angie.
I like the purse trick Chris! Also considered picking up paint chips to assess too.
Blush is tricky for me too Jessikams, and I'm year round "tan". The deeper, cedary shades can work for me, but most are too light.

I seem to run into this problem with “blush” items. It’s like one day they look great and the next day, deadly blah. Maybe it depends on how much “tan” I have at any given time?

In recently found a trick that worked very well for identifying cool vs warm tan/beige colors. I took a burgundy bag that is cool and a cognac bag is warm and used them as warm vs cool “indicators”, and hung them over the garment in natural light. In my case i was trying to assess a jacket. I even took the whole thing outside. It was quite obvious which bag was a better color match and that gave me the read on warm vs cool. I guess you don’t need to use bags for this, you could use any garment or item as long as it is a saturated solid color with a good deal of contrast between the garment you are assessing and the “indicator” items.

Even non iridescent pieces like the sweater do it. I do still like the raincoat, but the difference between it and my skin on cloudy days bothers me.

Camel is definitely workable. It's about same as my skin color in warmth, but maybe a bit lighter. It's just hard to find.

No expert but buying things in store should help due to retail lighting often being cool. And maybe sticking to the warmer end of the spectrum.

I wore camel a lot last winter and am looking forward to getting my pieces out again. I works wear in summer but mine are more cool weather options.

The raincoat is iridescent, so that's the nature of the beast. The shade changes in the light. I know the coat though - it's a top pick. I have a few clients in it, and the overall colour is very warm and coppery when people look at you.

Personally, I don' think it's worth worrying about IF the colour looks great on your complexion in natural light. That's the most important part. If that's sorted - enjoy!

It's that time of year again! I'm finding myself drawn to light neutrals (meaning tan, camel, golden beige-- not whites).

But, the colors often will shift depending on the light towards pink or grey- whereas deep colors stay put. It's happened with knits and wovens. My skin is very warm toned so no room for error :/

My raincoat looks copper in the office, but pink compared to my skin when outside. My little beige cardigan sometimes looks greyer. Only my tan MK puffer keeps it's true color in different light. Wish I could show in pics what happens, but the camera distorts the color.
So- how do I find fabrics that keep a warm tone despite the lighting?
