Angie I see that your post says that a necklace laying a few inches below the base of the neck is generally flattering. That is a good basic guideline. Thankyou.

I guess I have always been confused on whether the necklace draws attention away from the neck or draws the attention to the neck. I think this is where one needs to know the good length, just like in good length of capris.
Tanya, enjoy your long neck and do dress it up with those chokers. They are so cute on the right person, I think.

I like both the chokers that lie at the base of the neck and the dog-collar style. But then again I do have some giraffe-like properties ( long and skinny neck) :)
I think that the chunkier the beads, the thinner they would make one's neck look.
I agree that a beautiful necklace is a great focal point of an outfit and a distraction from other s[pots we are not to fond of.

I have a terribly short neck (can't really wear turtlenecks- too much fabric, even the petite ones!!), plus not a very great chin-line (prone to a little waddle and, ahem, duplication if I gain weight). For years and years, I never wore necklaces of *any* kind because I didn't like to draw attention to my neck.

Since going over the age of 40, I've started to get some crepeiness on my neck too - especially right at the base of it. Very little wrinkles on my face - but BOY is my neck showing my age!!!!

Oddly enough, I'm learning that the right bold necklace (not necessarily choker-length) can somehow confuse the eye and draw attention away from these flaws...

(or so I tell myself ... hee hee)

I generally like a 16" necklace, which on me sits where my two collarbones meet. I don't do well with chunky necklaces that are this length, though, only more delicate pendant necklaces (in my opinion). For chunkier, I like at least 18" and I would say I have a large or a skinny neck, it's just average, I think.

A choker can also describe a necklace that sits up high on the neck (like a dog collar and pardon the similarity). These types of chokers are hard to wear. You need a skinny, long neck.

Chokers as you describe can come in a variety of lengths sometimes up to a few inches below the base of the neck. This is generally flattering. But body type and jewelry scale come into play. The neckline of the top is another influencing factor. Hope that helps.

I think a choker length necklace would be laying right at the base of the neck.
When I was in high school in the '70's choker length would have been tied around the neck up in the middle, but I haven't seen that for years.

What do you understnd by choker length? Where is the necklace positioned on a neck?

I would like to know if choker length necklaces are the most flattering length? I think they are very cute on others but always thought my neck was too fat and didn't want to draw attention there.
