You're nice to do this for your daughter in law. I took my daughter shopping and it was fun. It helped her to have me there to run and get sizes and styles for her since I know her well. She was a little shy about it at first but we ended up getting her 3 pair of good jeans and several tops and we were both happy.
If your daughter in law is not used to dressing up at all I bet she would love to start with some great fitting jeans and then add some casual but nice tops. You'll find when you get there that it will flow nicely and she'll probably go home with several things that she likes and will love to wear. And she will love you for it too.
Ofcourse like the others said it all starts with a good bra fitting. I hope you have a shop in your town that specializes in that. It would be worth it to drive to another town to find a Nordstom's if you need to.

Oh no. Any specialty lingerie shops?

There is a lot of info on inverted triangle body types on the site. A search might be helpful.

Start DIL off with a good pair of jeans.

Do you think Navy or brown pants as oppsed to black with be a more fashion forward choice for dressy slacks?

Maya has you sorted. You are indeed a fab MIL.

Can you get DIL fitted at Nordstrom for a bra? It sounds like she in larger on top than on the bottom. Is that right?

thanks ! She is a nurse..26 with three little ones and not much time to spend on herself..or maybe its energy. She is a pretty casual gal and doesnt really have occasions to dress up for very often. At work she wears scrubs.
So...I am thinking a couple of pairs of jeans(that fit), a solid color dressy casual slack, a casual jacket, some tops for every day and a couple of "nicer' dressier things.(tops0..and I just done know about a dress. I have never seen her in one. We live in South Dakota so as you can imagine its colder than the dickens here and we wont see spring till May. I personally love dresses and skirts..its my go-to wardrobe in the summer.

What an amazing mother in law you are! I hope I a MIL like you someday, hehe.

Well first I would start by getting her fitted for a bra. Until you do that, it's pointless to even try to shop for tops. Don't trust her when she tells you her bra size! I don't trust most women with their bra sizes. I myself once wore a cup size too small and a band size too big, and that is the same mistake most women make.

Look for knit tops with open necklines and avoid at all cost anything with a high neckline. It's hard for me to give much more advice without seeing her, but being busty and petite myself (though not THAT busty), I can relate. Since spring is coming up, how would she feel about picking up a few dresses? Jackets look particularly good on busty women. A fabulous denim jacket and another fitted jacket in a different material should be a good start.

For bottoms, I don't think any body type can really go wrong with some bootcut or trouser jeans. Just grab a whole pile in her size and have her try them on one after the other. It's the only way to find the right brand and cut.

And don't forget accessories!

OK, that might be a lot for you. I'm not sure what your budgeting for her, but those are some ideas.

What is her style, personality, and taste like? Does she work? Is she a SAHM? If she works, what kind of place does she work in? Answering some of these questions might help us better advise you.

My daughter in law is a fashion disaster. Her birthday is monday and I want to take her shopping for some wardrobe basics. Her daily attire consists of too baggy jeans or sweats and her husbands t-shirts.
She is petite 5 ft...very large bosom 44 -48 ish and has no rear end.I have no idea what clothes might look best on her, but I know I can help her and she needs it. Her self esteem needs a huge boost and I want to do this for her. I know she needs some good bras to start but after that I am lost. Capris look awful, they make her look shorter than she is.....help!!! Please ;0)
